Ghostbusters - 8.5/10...
Funny,

Ghostbusters 2 - 6/10...
A little too stupid but it still had a few laughs in it.

Ghost in the Shell 7/10

Found my old VHS tape of this stuffed in the back of a cupboard today.

Speaking from the perspective of someone who saw the second movie first, initially I was a little put off by the crappy voice acting and changes in the characterisation. I'd sort of gotten used to Batao's emotionless mannerisms and so forth. I really liked the character Motoko though, and I sort of wish she'd had more of a presence in Innocence, rather than showing up 10 mins from the end, is all like "hi guys!" then leaves. That being said I liked the storyline, and there was less of the philosophical rambling present in Innocence.

GhostBusters - 9/10

Ghostbusters 2 - 8/10

I think my marks are somewhat nostalgic and therefore slightly biased, but even watching them now, I still f*cking love 'em.

Hitman - 6/10

Kind of silly...the most annoying thing is how people are like, "how do you know he [hitman] will be there!?" and the guy always answers with something like, "cause I know him!" without giving a sliver of logic or reason. And the bit on the train with the mini-swords was kind of a cheesy setup. They all just carry around swords? I mean where does he store them? His hotel room got blown up in a foreign country and we could see he wasn't wearing his swords...did he go buy some new ones? Does he have stashes of swords around the world?

I pity people who can't - scratch that - won't enjoy Jackass.

I pity people who can't - scratch that - won't enjoy Jackass.

I tried. I even forced myself to laugh at some parts...but in general it's what makes me think that the human race needs a restart.

Well, Jackass and a million other things.

But there's something about watching a drunk 20something staple his scrotum to his leg that defies disappointment in humanity.

I just got back from a press screening of Transformers 2.

I hereby declare that Michael Bay is deliberately out to screw with my mind.

Why, do you ask? Simple!

In the original Transformers, I was salivating over Megan Fox until halfway through the film, when my mother leaned over and said, "She looks just like Britty, doesn't she?" I realized that she was, in fact, quite right. There is a startling resemblence between Megan Fox and my cousin, and I felt really dirty.

NOW, a NEW chick is introduced, who looks exactly like my other cousin, Emily, except Emmy's paler.

I have been forced to one, inescapable conclusion: Michael Bay is attempting to mind screw me. I do not know how he knows me; I have never met the man, but the facts cannot be ignored.

Goddamn it, Michael Bay!

Luckily, I have run out of older female cousins. So I don't know what he'll do for the inevitable Transformers 3.

P.S.: The film was reasonably enjoyable. I'm not a huge Transformers fan, but it was absolutely gorgeous in IMAX.

No, it doesn't. It increases disappointment in humanity exponentially. The only way it could make me less disappointed is if he actually managed to ****ing kill himself and shit like that would get taken off the air.

Aliens - 10/10

I have many favourite films which is why I usually start every sentence in this thread with ''one of my favourite films'' and yes, this is one of them and yes, it always gets a straight 10 or top marks whenever I watch it. I can quote about 80% of it now, I reckon.

Why do you suppose they call it jackass?
Because "social commentary" was already taken! DOHOHOHOO

That is so uniformly crass. 'Jackass', the idiots guide to entertainment.

I actually agree with you here.
Watching these men, who lacks talent and self respect drink horse jizz and get hurt, just to become famus, disgust me. They are the male Paris Hiltons.

Aliens cant have a rating of 10/10 ..that would mean Alien would have a rating of 11/10

"this one goes to 11"

Year One- 8/10

Ehh. Entertaining. Funny in some parts.

My life in ruins- Terrible. My dumbass friend picked this movie to see at the movies, everyone of my friends hated it. Me too. Bad movie. 0/10.... no just kidding. 4/10.

The Usual Suspects 9/10
One of the best endings ever

Raising Arizona 8/10
Wow Nicholas cage used to be in decent movies

transformers deuce - 8/10

michael bay actually showed up and thanked everyone for coming. pretty ****ing random.

The Hangover - 5/10

Nothing special. About as "good" as his previous moves like Road Trip. Not in the Apatow league of comedies.

5 Centimeters Per Second - 9/10 - One of the few movies that's ever made me cry. Absolutely beautiful and perfectly stylised.

I'm sure that means a whole lot to them.

Cared enough to respond. HO HO HO

/pity

Seriously though. Are we not allowed to enjoy base humor any more? What could be so deforming to the face of humanity in watching a person breathe in farts from a tube in another man's butt? It's supposed to be ****ing crass and lowbrow, god damn it. If that's not your thing, then okay. But this melodrama is totally unnecessary.

Idiot entertainment? That might be a more accurate description than you think. But just because I eat steak doesn't mean I don't like a corn dog now and then. You possess the ability to enjoy your brilliant fancy-pants "intelligent" humor while still getting some primal kick out of watching people hit each other in the nuts.

Dick Tracy - 7/10

It actually still measured up fairly well to my earlier childhood memories of it. The scenes and grotesque characters are still good to look at, even if it's often more style than substance.

Ong-Bak 8.5/10

funny and awesome movie. best part was the flaming kicks to the stupid guys.

Band of Brothers 8/10

Awesome miniseries that i just had to rewatch, the new one Pacific is coming out in 2010

the girl who leapt through time 9/10

one of my favourite anime movies ever :D

It still doesn't get old :)

You're entitled to whatever lowbrow, primal, idiot entertainment you want. The problem I see is people who try to justify it as more than that. And there's so much out there that is just complete trash. Wolverine was one of the worst movies ever, and so many people realise that, but they're still so stupid that they're going to pay more money to see the almost certainly even worse sequel.

Shows like Springer and John and Kate Plus 8 stay on the air because idiot people are obsessed with watching people who are even stupider than themselves because it's one of the few ways they feel superior. And, really, I doubt most of those people would actually get the type of humour that I enjoy. Here's a hint. It doesn't involve breathing in farts or hitting each other in the nuts.

Patrick Stewart enjoys Beavis and Butthead. And I've never really understood that, but I also don't think it makes him a moron. However, if he came around and said it was one of the best shows ever made, I might be inclined to change my opinion of him.

But what we're talking about is the enjoyment of base humour. It's just that. Base. It's the lowest form of humour there is. If you want to sink to that level, be my guest. But watching morons injuring themselves is no more entertaining than watching their marriages fail, or watching them be awful parents. I see too much of that disappointing and completely appalling behavior in the real world (tm) to possibly find it enjoyable.

It's not my thing, and I'm not being melodramatic. I hardly think the world is ending because of garbage like that. But it certainly is a symptom of the larger problem of anti-intellectualism that is sweeping most societies these days.

This reminds me of the time that Lucid said he couldn't enjoy Lost in Translation because he found it boring. Yes, a movie with actual depth instead of explosions every two seconds. If you think for a second that the things you like don't reflect on you as a person, then you're lying to yourself.

I haven't really seen many of the japanese animated movies. Just really Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Jin-Roh, and Princess Mononoke. And even those I haven't seen in 4+ years. Suffice to say, 5 Centimeters per Second was really, really refreshing. Samon recommended it some months ago and I finally got around to it this morning.

Should I check out the one you mentioned?

I found it boring too, depth and explosions have nothing to do with it.

Pinocchio - 4/5
With the Disney movies, it takes me a while to work out whether I've seen them before in my childhood. I'm still none the wiser here, since I'm pretty sure I would have repressed memories of seeing this if I was a child... but then, as an adult there's a whole extra dimension of sinister to it. Some of it's probably not intentional (why does Gepetto want a real boy in his house anyway, huh?) but some of it must be (the coachman who takes young boys to pleasure island, and they 'don't come back as boys'?!), and it's just generally as far from a stereotype of Disney as simple, tedious good versus evil as you're likely to find.

It's a spectacular piece of animated film-making, quite remarkable for its age (the Monstro 'battle' at the end is just an incredible bit of action)... It's got surprisingly good songs (even beyond If you wish upon a star), and memorable characters. It tugs the heart strings one moment (elderly Geppeto out searching for his half wooden son in the rain) then frightens the living crap out of you the next (Lampwick transforming into a donkey makes you wonder why Pinocchio is remembered for its protagonist's transforming nose). Yet... purely as a matter of preference, it doesn't score full marks. Something seems missing, perhaps because it IS too savage and not surgary sweet enough for someone recently infected by Kiki's Delivery Service. But then, the story is undeniably bitty, sending Pinocchio randomly hither and thither (thanks to the serialised source) and despite their best efforts, Pinocchio himself is kind of hard to like at times. Though the idea is that he doesn't understand right from wrong, his naivety seems a little too extreme sometimes.

edit: Oh, I watched the blu-ray. I don't think doing so is essential in the slightest (compared with Sleeping Beauty, which is a film to sell the format if ever I saw one), but it's nice to have a definitive version.

I was right about how watching Isao Takahata's movies would slow me up through the Ghibli collection. I'm kind of tempted to skip Pom Poko...

I find you boring. Your post was expected to the point that I considered writing it for you. And way to miss the point.

Right back at ya.
I didn't care about your 'point' you spout it endlessly and while I agree somewhat I have come to find grating your ever-present holier-than-thou-unless-though-art-samon attitute and strawman attacks implying that anyone who disagrees with your opinion by any noticeable degree is a slack-jawed yokel.
