Ravenholm's Sobbing Zombies

It makes you feel bad for the humans who get zombafied

It also kinda makes you hate the headcrabs more

Am I the only person who was absolutely horrified by the sounds the zombies make whilst on fire? I've played through SS2, Undying, AvP, AvP2 etc., and I've never felt my stomach go cold like that. Egad. I'm not sure which thought is more horrifying... that the "zombies" aren't actually dead and the remnants of a human consciousness is weeping in non-understood agony, or the zombie is entirely dead, and the headcrab is relaying its pain through the nervous system of its host, giving the impression of human anguish. Man. Nasty.

Anyway, I'm bored and felt like wasting everyone's time.
yeah, i was very disturbed by that part. when i watched the video the second time, i just muted the sound on the zombies. they sounded so tortured so it was freaky

That part was extremely depressing, i made out only "ohhhhh gooood no, nooooo, god"...then i stopped watching it...really depressing. If anyone thinks it sounds stupid, they've never heard true mental and physical anguish, it's as if they know they're not in control of their body anymore, know that it's all over, yet can't die...I just scared and depressed myself...

well, for one, how could they scream with a heacrab covering their mouthes?

Second how could they scream if the headcrab has taken over their nural system as said in HL.

Third assuming that the first two are true, the headcrabs must be producing the scream, how do the headcrabs know english?

The screams are alright, I don't mind them that much, but they're not too scary to me.

I actually don't care for the zombie screams as they seem a little contrived and forced. Beating us over the head with the guilt/shock stick, if you will.

It seems to me that the victims wouldn't be capable of screaming, even if they had enough mental capacity at that point to create sounds, much less words. Even so, their screams would be very muffled and gurgled from a big wet, juicy headcrab humping their visage.

Just my nitpicky $0.02

Edit: Jeez, #48 pretty much mirrored my sentiments before I could finish my post.

Since it included words like "oh god!" and "help!!" ect...

watch it again and listen closely. :)

Yeah, I would have to say D3 was the scariest game i've played so far. I'm sure it always will be too. Not that it was too scary. I liked it. It will work perfectly for HL2. A little scary stuff and alot of action...perfect. :)

I was horrofied when I heard that sound ..
I can't understand why people laughed at it .. or why would people find that funny in anyway

Eh, Doom3 was pretty scary, but more in the "Jump out and yell at you" way than the true, evil horrific stuff. Undying, holy crap. System Shock 2, holy crap. Alien Vs Predator 2, the first few marine levels were bleak, desolate, and frightening beyond belief.

yeah, the zombie definately screamed "OOOOH GODDDD!!!"

made my skin crawl, I definately won't hesitate to end their pain

wow, just watched the bink again, my god, i remember it gave me chills the first time, but jesus, it's so wrong, it just sounds so disturbing, damn, awesome use of sound on valve's part

I just recently played doom 3, and I was completely immersed in the look of it. Ive never seen such beauty in a game. If it is a sample of HL2, I am getting HL2 the day it comes out. I agree that the gameplay is repetitive but it does work somewhat. If your a hardcore gamer, D3 isnt scary, its pretty.

As for the zombies, it sends chills down my mutilated spinal column. The screams do depict a disturbing feeling in the back of my head, feeling some pity for the victim. Yes it is a bit distrubing, but if you have ever seen a fat man in a thong, thats worse.

I bet you the screams came from Gabe when he found out that his donuts were all eaten after he came back from the toilet. They were clever to stick a hidden mic under the box, to capture the true pain, and fear element needed to scare even the bravest of gamers... well it worked.
J/k honestly though the screams are good. I cant wait for the review.

you now it sounds like someone getting there lungs and intestines riped out screaming and gargling at the same time

I've joined this topic fairly late, and while I had the chance to be on the first page, I chose to allow it to develope. I have a pretty good idea now that it isn't going to stray off course into a flame-fest, so I'll make a post.

I thought those sounds were scary as hell. I hope Valve uses that scare tactic to their advantage (i.e. A combine guard shoots a gas tank in the distance, away from you, and you begin to hear the wailing of a burning zombie as you progress). I was ready to turn the Bink off when it came to that point, but by forcing my hands into my pockets, and flipping my keyboard on "off" I was able to resist.

I hope the skin-crawling didn't end there, Valve!

Heh, I love that word. My grandma uses it all the time. :)

Lol, mine too

about the zombies, yeah that freaked me out too
it still does and it sounds like you are playing a game where you torture people, thats probably what it sounds like to the rest of my family

I'm sure the screams are coming from the headcrab controlling the body, not whatever is left of the humanity or some such things. It's interesting how it can apparently control the mouth. Also, creepy.

But hey, headcrab, you wanted to control the body, that's what you get. Now eat this exploding barrel, with a .357 dinner mint.

It is realy disturbing, sounds kind of muffled. Think I should stick a big turkey on my head and try screaming. I think it would sound just like that.
I hate flame throwers in games, just a horific way to die. I think I shall try and be merciful and dispatch zombies as quickly as possible.

I doubt it. How could a headcrab speak english and wouldnt they talk when theyre not attached to a human (they dont do that do they)? The screams sound muffled, so if its the human talking it would make sense considering they have an alien stuck over their head, but in that condition they shouldnt be able to talk at all and if they could they wouldnt only do it when set on fire.
I think valve just didnt think it through. But i dont mind, its good for the games atmosphere.

You're taking this into WAAAAY too much consideration.

I don't mind being creeped out. I really enjoyed the alien, yet evil sound of the HL1 zombies when they laughed at you.

However, the screams in the Ravenholm video were highly disturbing to me, and not in a good way. I really hope they have changed them, and may possibly change the sounds myself when I play if they have not. Those screams just left me feeling desolate, and empty, and not wanting to play HL2, which is really saying something. All of the other parts look great to me, but that part was just too much.

I know many of you will laugh at that, but it's too hideous, too depressing, and too saddening for me to hear, especially over and over. I don't want to get used to that. I'm not that cold-hearted.

I don't relish games where it is so realistic that I actually feel like real people are dying, especially innocent people. Of course, I almost never killed Barney on purpose in HL1, either. Even when he died, he didn't sound like he was being murdered slowly.

I think some people are overreacting slightly here.
I mean seriously, its a ****ing sound effect. Listen, on tv here a while back, on the news, they were doing this thing about child porn on the internet and they even showed a video. Of course the visuals were blurred out but the audio wasnt and i can tell u that that was a million times worse to listen to than the zombies screaming in hl2 (although the sound was sorta similar). If you think its really so bad that you cant listen to it i think youre in for a few shocks in the real world.
No offense to anyone.

also that screams sound real cuz you will be screming like that if you had is in the estomach of a alien and someone set you in fire

oh, dont worry, you can understand them....

and, how about that howl you hear in the ally near the end of the bink, now that is scarry

It's not that I can't handle it or listen to it, but I don't wish to. It's like those web site that show gory accidents on video, decapitations, photos of car crash victims, etc. I can watch those, and I have seen a few, but they sicken me and I do not wish to watch them. Just because I choose not to watch something doesn't mean I can't. I mean, on a different note, I don't look at pornography. It doesn't mean I *can't*, but I don't wish to do so.

No, the screams don't bother me nearly as much as those gore videos, but they do have a similar (though substantially lesser) affect on me, and so I hope they have changed them. For me, they would sincerely detract from the gameplay, and be something to endured, and enjoyed, from an atmospheric point of view.

And as for being in for a few shocks in the real world, I don't think so. Yes, there are hideous things that happen in the "real world" every day, but that doesn't mean I need to go looking for them, or choose to listen to them. I'm aware rapes happen, for instance, but have no desire to see videos of it happening. I am already horrified by such things, so why watch it happen? There are enough evil things in the world that we should spend our time seeking out the good, and uplifting.

Just my thoughts on the matter. Everyone has to choose how they approach life for themselves.

I think that is what VALVe was aiming for. They immerse you so deeply that for the zombies, you just want to end it quickly for them, because you feel sorry for them. Damn all the more reason this game is gonna rock :D

Edit: Discussing the topic above, horror videos don't freak me out at all. Even though they're real, I know I'm not there so it doesn't really affect me. The game though, you feel like you're actually there doing that stuff.

Everyone has to choose how they approach life for themselves.

'Tis true... as a rule though I seek out some secondhand horrors to get a view of what the world is actually like. It makes you appreciate the fragility of the good all the more. I really like anything that gets an emotional reaction out of me, even if it's "bad"... I remember the first time I watched Se7en... the movie's climax left me feeling absolutely drained, hollow and depressed... and it was wonderful. Not to sound too nuts. :) But any entertainment form that can win over that kind of strength in viewers' emotional responses... or make you feel true human sympathy for a fictional character, is an amazing thing and I'm truly glad that some in the industry go out of their way to achieve that.

Yeah... I like the sobbing. It will make the struggle against the Combine all the more meaningful and emotional.

i really dislike the sounds, makes you not want to set them on fire because then you hear it :x

You can EASILY mod in a NULL sound for the zombie if it's too much to bear.

As for me i absolutely love that scream. The fact that it really makes you think there's a human trapped under that headcrab is excellent. You feel pity and remorse as you launch razor blades at it's abdomen cutting in half !!!OH YEAH!!

That kind of emotional response is fantastic and Valve have done a great job to make people like Twilight feel disturbed and repulsed.
