So in all of the FPS multiplayer games I play (Predominantly red faction and DoD, i go by the name of sc(+)pe) I snipe... because that's what I'm best at.

With Half-Life 2's multiplayer, will I be able to hop onto a roof (assuming there are multiplayer levels with buildings), block the pathway to it, and use the surrounding things to make myself a little sniper's shelter that looks natural and would be hard to spot?

Or would this be too hard considering the amount of people speculated to be in a HL2 multiplayer game?

Hm, well considering we dont know a thing about the multiplayer... its hard to say....

I think a structure noone had seen on the map before on the top of the building may be a tad obvious

It's time to eeeeeeeeeeemail Valve! :E

Nah, they won't say a word about their top-secret multiplayer goodness... :|

Nah... with the physics engine, things would get moved around alot... some barrels and a few planks of wood wouldn't look obvious unless you were really looking. And who's going to be doing that when there's someone with a shotgun 7 feet away from them?

Hell, even just a couple of barrels

Damn, I never thought of it like that. With the physics, and the modability of the game, I'm sure if it isn't immediatly possible with HL2 MP, it can be by some 3rd party programming... sounds pretty awesome :)

oh, that sounds sweet. i never thought about it.

Well all I really do is snipe.. though I get accused of camping alot... but thats what the whole point is, and I really really thought about it in HL2 and it will be magnificant if it rings true...

a sniper's realistic fantasy

Unless the map is hard to memorize, then I wouldnt count on it working too well.

Well, it would still be better than the existing sniper's spots... which are really terrible in current games... but I assume the environments will be massive (god im hoping) and hey... with all of these posibilities, im sure there are plenty of innovative ways to shoot someone in the face

We've yet to get a multiplayer that actually has GOOD physics (for objects and such... not ragdolls/vehicles) implemented. I almost said no game has had physics in multiplay, but then I remember Devastation... heh. :)

I reckon you'd be hunted down and stabbed like the goat bastards that all snipers are.

Failing that you probably could do it but the chance of not being noticed while you drab these thigns around is slim at best. I'd sure as hell find you.

What games are there that have physics in multiplayer? are there any? and im not talkin about rag doll physics.

if tha map had randomly generated objects all over the place then it would be much more less obvious

much more less obvious.
lol.

I like to snipe too, it would be cool to be able to construct very simple nests. People would work out where you are before long though.

Well in the beta you can pick up things by pressing use. I'm guessing you could pick up a whole bunch of boxes and pieces of wood to make yourself a little hideout. Oh how sweet it would be to lob a grenade into your little cowardice corner and watch you ragdoll back to kingdom come.

how about DOOM. DOOM had physics :p (not ragdoll or vehicle, but player.) so ner.

I really like the idea, and i don't think there's much of an issue about "people will immediately notice the difference". With a lot of random debris around, easily moved [even by running into / jumping over a cardboard box, for eg], and if tactics and stand-offs are involved... I can easily see temp forts being set up, small sandbag trenches being made [with things other than sandbags :)], and temporary blockages of doorways... So building a small wall of random objects to hide behind, or use as cover... That would not be too hard.

The problem is with mappers being bothered to put in all the random debris [or do you think you can just spawn a random item somewhere as an entity, every time the map is loaded? And have a few hundred of these around, and randomise the percentage chance of the entity spawning something]... But I think if we just had some mods/maps with empath authors behind them, then we'll be pretty set.

It should be interesting to see how the multiplayer set-up pans out, too. Personally I'm relying on the flexibility and range of options provided for modders and mappers to get the most out of the multiplayer hl2 experience, or maybe they really have put effort into the multiplayer. But, considering the mindset of valve, as they look at the success of hl, I can easily imagine them thinking "Hey, our multiplayer wasn't that great, but the mods made us what we are today. Why try something else?"

I think the multiplayer will be on the standard of most retail singleplayer-based FPS nowadays, with the added HL2 graphics, etc.

But then again, I am one of those people who wants to know less about HL2, and imagines it will be no greater than how it is currently shown through the media, so when it comes out I will [maybe] get a huge wonderful surprise.

Sandbag trenches with something other than sandbags...

Corpse-stacking, anyone?

hey you forget that maybe your team mates might beable to cover up the snipers with matresses or somthing , lol, that would certainly be intresting. hiding team mates under debris.... but then what kind of temporary protection would you want.. cause having a matress on your head isnt exactley gonna make you invisible :)

if your making your own hideout,, surely you would have to practice, with the welder on the physgun, so theres skill envolved,, and an added factor of getting caught building it.

I bet there will be manip-only maps a few days after the game's release. :p

might come with the game.. may give the option to have certain weapon types only, god I hope so

Well... I was thinking something a bit more natural looking than a little fort, but meh, whatever works.

And I really dont think it would be hard to open a door, use the grave gun or just push some objects in front of the door, and then run into a couple of barrels and gravgun the wood... (there's probably a way to just put it down).

MrWhite, i was thinking anything from moving a large cardboard box into a better position, to a matress leaning against two barrels, to a wall of barrels with a mound of planks, crates, tyres, and random objects built around it, to sheets of steel balanced against some props.

or you could weld them to the props, rather than just balance them :)

you wouldnt have enought time to build anything. lots of team work would be necessary and lets face it, such thing doesn't exist. besides, look at a round of counter strike and the time it takes to be finished. no time at all to do anything else except shoot. u all have god ideas, u really do, but hl2 is a fps, not an rpg or mmporpg were u have time to do all thse things and stuff.
just mah 2 cents

umm tarkus, that really has nothing to do with anything

the speed and style of the game... depends on a few things:

the game. the map. the server [admin scripts etc]. the players.

any of those can determine the style of the gameplay.

and thats not all.. you say "its not going to happen". and you give an example of cs, as if somehow that is the epitomy of multiplayer FPS gaming... no way. that could, and would, happen in any game. its just how people feel like playing it, dependant on a few factors on the game to scale the intensity of their style.

im not expecting people to rush into the enemy spawn [?] and then just have the entire team spend 10 minutes welding together a sniper tower. thats just stupid.

however, setting up small MG or sniper nests in strategic places.. yes. and strategy and teamwork is used in a lot of games, it depends on the players though. you are taking your examples from.. where? ah, CS i see. yeah, the community there is GREAT. a wonderful example to apply to every aspect of gaming.

you came up with some prime stuff, really you did, but in the end, you can keep your 2 cents

Eh, when I play red faction, the games can last up to 30 minutes, with the geo-mod, on some maps I dig myself a little spot sometimes, other times I just use whats given.

I dont know... pushing two barrells takes a team? I don't really think so. And using Counterstrike as an example isn't really justified because of it's fast paced run and gun, it doesn't really focus on much else if anything else at all

all this gives me an idea. I fthere were normal grenades, could We use it for traps like when someone moves a box it sets off the grenade and frags the person.

It's called a tripmine. :)

im sure this would be possible, a little nuts, but possible :O

Building your own fort is nice and well but something I would REALLY like to see in the multiplayer component would be something like this:

Say you're chasing after someone and they run away because they are low on health (bear with me, unlikely as it may seem) as you run along the map you see some rocks in between the 2 mountains of the canyon. In order to prevent his escape, you can either shoot the rocks and have them fall down on top of your enemy effectively crushing your enemy's escape attempt (pun intended :p ) or shoot them before he gets there and block his path.

I'd really like to have physics play more of a role in the game other than looking pretty.

Oh my god... Thanks Rico for posting that, you got me into a 5 minute daydream of the possible things you can do... AHHHH I WANT THIS GAME!!!!

Oh and I love how in the TrapTown video, he knocks all that stuff down onto the stairs, to block the pursuing Combine, AWESOME. We should make an official thread full of ideas that use this amazing addition to gameplay, physics.

I love sniping in all kinds of MP FPS'es, this is an awesome idea!
