What with all the news lately of the proposed ammendment to the constitution to ban same sex marriages, I thought I'd poll our little community as to what you all think. I'm married and I have no problems with same sex couples having every right I now enjoy (although I'm not so sure what if any benefits there are ;) )

once again, please refrain from gay bashing, flaming or homophobic comments

edit: please take the time to explain your reasoning

Frankly, I am in the opinion that its their choice. And that I have no right to choose what they want to do.

Seriously, who has the right to say that people cant do what they want if it doesnt harm or affect anyone...?

Sure, I say gay people should be able do everything straight people do. Just as long as they never ever do another show like Fab 5 or queer makeover.

Im all for same sex "marriages" but i don't belive it should be called marriage.

They should have all the benefits that entail marriage.

It doesn't bother me. If gay people want to marry, it's up to them. What's the point in banning it? There is none, all it does is cause a fuss

please explain why you say "i don't belive it should be called marriage" ...just for clarity sakes

Of course gay people should be able to get married. For me its a civil rights issue. This is just a basic human right that these people should be allowed to excercise just like any other person. I love it when rightwing bigots whine "But it'll cheapen the institution of marriage!"

I for one know that the only reason I wanted to get married was to stick it to gay people. I mean, if gay people can get married...what's the point? /sarcasm

Well marriage is usually from the power of god yada yada(i dont know if its the same at registery offices)

Actually thinking about it im on the fence.

I belive there should be all the legal bindings and benefits of marriage. But it's kind of hard to explain why i don't think it should be called marriage.

On one hand i don't want seperation yada yada.
On the other marriage has always been between man and woman and is invested by the power of "god"

ARGH DAMN YOU!!! you have got my head in a spin now.

I need to think about this for a while then i will get back with an answer.

its kinda obvious that its not meant to be... lol

the purpose of life is creation, and how do u create? u use a women... lol

heheh, that's why I asked you to clarify ...so that you can think it thru

The purpose of life isnt creation.

That's the purpose of survival.

Anyway gay people can addopt.

and a lot of hetero couples are unable to have kids, while some just shouldnt have kids

In my opinion homosexuals shouldn't be able to marry. Marriage should be kept for men & women only.

Fair enough, there are lots of gay couples and there probably always will be, so they should have the right to mortgages, and general stuff that couples have rights to.

Saying that not allowing them to marry is a human right's violation is bullshit too.

I give this thread ten more posts before it starts being a flame also.

they should not be able to ADOPT, how do u know if the kid wants to even be raised by homo-sexuals ? im sure they wouldnt... lol

KingGady, could you please re-read the first post ...NO HOMOPHOBIC comments

How do you know the kid wants to be raised unwanted?

Neglected? Aborted? etc etc.

I would rather place a kid with 2 loving "fags" then with 2 crappy hetro couples.

Tbh, if "god" really does have some sort of message in the fact that only hetro couples can have kids, then why the feck do I go to Asda and hear some little snotty dick cry for a £300 toy, until his Mum gives it him? Or have to hear another parent say "Don't you ****ing swear at me!" to their kid?

In response to the actual poll...

Yes, it's their damned life, now leave them alone.

What the f*** are you on about? Only hetro couples can have kids because the human race isn't A-Sexual! If a person 'knows' they are gay, they should also accept the fact that the can't have kids as a gay person.

I know a guy who's father was married to his mother for 10 years (had 3 kids) and then 'came-out' and all 3 kids hate him for it.

an example of good parenting :upstare: I witnessed today

I was waiting at the bus station this morning when a bus pulled up next to where the bus I take loads passengers. The bus driver came out with a 3 year old in his arms and a 6 year old following closely behind. He walked up to a woman who was with 2 other kids listening to her walkman. Apparently the 2 kids had wandered off and boarded a bus heading in the opposite direction. The bus driver said something to her, she glowered at her two missing kids and put her headphones back on as if nothing had happened. It didnt even seem to phase her that her 2 young kids almost got lost. Now if this sorry excuse of a parent can have kids why shouldnt gay people be allowed to have them? They couldnt be any worse at parenting than this woman.

Granted there are too many bad parents in this country, which is why I think our ability to have kids should be switched off at birth and switched on only when we've proven ourselves worthy (so all the chavs can go **** each other and no little bastards are born through it).

I suppose gay people should be allowed to adopt, but it would be interesting to see how many of the adopted kids ended up homosexual whether by choice, or just because thats the only life choice they are accustomed to.

The bad parenting thing was what I meant. I was saying that "god" seriously messed up if he assumed that hetrosexual couples would be good parents, and gay couples would be bad ones. I'm not saying either should have exclusive rights, but consider what I'm saying.

Although, I think having some sort of maturity/situation/financial position switch would be even better.

They should have the same rights, but not religiously. The government can't force somthing onto religion.

Well most gay people probably had hetro parents.

So i don't really think that comes in to it.

Whatever floats their boats. :)

EDIT: I'm strongly against adoption though.

yes but the institution of marriage is exactly the same if I was married in front of a judge or in a church ...except the church uses words like "before god" etc

But isn't society mainly to blame? Society in general is very corrupt, and gets more and more corrupt every year.

Things that weren't acceptable when my mother was a kid, are common place now (as was the same with her and my grandmother).

Many women for example nowadays are total whores (you just have to visit any nightclub in the UK to see that), and have absolutley no self respect.

As you said, lack of jobs and the shitty environment the council expects people to live together in doesn't help too.

Neither does the ever-over-expanding population.

and would calling it something else really be so bad then (if it isnt recognised by any religious organisation)...?

Yeah, steps do need to be taken to steralise large portions of stupid or unfit people who, in any other circumstance, would have died out before they hit 18.

Let's start with the guy who came up with docusoaps.

yes it would be bad ...because it implies a set of distinct rules for gay people

oh and there are quite a few religious institutions that will wed gay couples ...some are christian

... and why dont we use the Trisha show... as soon as the guests are taken off, have them taken to a 'special' room

I'm definitely okay with it. Anyone remember that Seinfeld episode where the guys got so excited about certain *cat fights*? :naughty:

That's so silly... gay people should be aloud to get married.

Now, I never thought about not having it called marraige because of the religious aspect, but that would be just as good in my opinion (until the super christian homosexuals start to complain, and yes... there are homosexuals who beleive that god loves everyone like he/she/it says he/she/it does)

Furthermore... I'm suprised to see so many bigots in america... the place where you're allowed to have freedom in all or most of your choices...

Infact, I think it's a little unamerican (though im canadian) to hate gay people.

And finally... not to start a flamewar, but if your religion does say to t eat everyone equally but then contradicts itself by saying that gay poeple are evil/should die/or you should just hate them... not everyone beleives in your religion.

Not everyone beleives in your religion... so what? Leave them alone. You beleive what you want to beleive and you keep that to yourself unless someone asks you for it.

Gay people aren't worth less than you so they should have equal the oppertunities. They can do everyhting you can (with the exception of have a child... but technically they can). They are people too.

Let people live the way the want to unless it affects you directly.

Oh, and I know there are variants for everyone. Not everyone beleives they should die... not everyone beleives they should just be looked down upon. Everyone is different.

What a pile of elitist bollocks. What gives you the right to deny other people the right to pass on their heritage.

I voted, yes, they should be allowed to, and get all the benifits of straight couples.

Zing! I'd also like to suggest...

Civil servants, Lord Butler, Prince Charles, Busted and crap teachers.

As a disclaimer, whilst I agree a better breed of humans is a good thing, I don't agree with sticking those who don't fall in with that in a gas chamber.

heheh yes ...."c-c-c-cat fight" ...heh the stupid grin on Kramer's face was priceless
