Oh man, Penumbra probably gave me some of the worst scares I've ever had in a game. As a whole, there are scarier games out there
Condemned had the scariest atmosphere, and the final level/the end cutscene gave me shivers for weeks.
Fear 1 had some good "BOO!" moments, but that was it.
Dead Space has the scariest enemies. Seriously, who wouldve thunk that crazy infected things would bother to stalk you silently and sneak up on you???
And for its age, System Shock 2 is still frightening. I dont know why, when I look at the videos it doesnt seem scary at all, but playing it is so much worse. Also, the reveal of SHODAN scared me big time.
You should try Penumbra if you havent already. I enjoyed it beyond being a scary game, and its fairly cheap.
I guess I tend to get drawn into the atmosphere. When playing these games I dont consciously remember that its only a game I'm playing. Thats what made Condemned 1 so creepy for me, yes the combat was very fun, but there were only a few times (generally when I would constantly die) that I thought of it as a game. Did you really think the shopping mall and the farmhouse werent creepy? I commend you if you do. Also, Mr. Tibbits ftl...
Fear I agree wasnt scary for the most parts, but admittedly some bits played the first time made me jump.
Dead Space I brought up simply because of one particularely memorable bit. I was playing some early level, in which you were in a very dark part of the ship with only narrow walkways in platforms. I kill what I think is all of the infected things, and begin exploring the walkways. Because of my camera angle I couldnt see behind me (was aiming my gun). I reach a dead end platform, and just notice two claws being raised right behind me before digging into poor Issac. Certainly made me jump.
System Shock 2
The first two X-COM games were pretty scary at times.
Thief: The Dark Project
Any of the levels with undead, especially Return to Cathedral. Scariest level I've played in any game.
Yeaaah AvP2 was probably one of the most "Jump out of your skin" scary games ever.
That was Darkside. Or Sonic. I forget, they're pretty much the same thing.Personally the most scariest game I've EVER played was with Stern, he said to play he had to touch my special place.
you were being sarcastic , right ?
