Scariest game ever?

SS2 or Penumbra.

Probably Penumbra based on the fact you can't kill anything that wants you dead.

the first 3 silent hill games were awesomely well done, especially the first 2. bits of silent hill 4 are really creepy aswell. don't play homecoming though because its absolute gash and an embarrassment to the works of art team silent created. as for other game, whilst at parts frustrating, clive barkers undying had some genuine atmosphere and great moments there

Oh man, Penumbra probably gave me some of the worst scares I've ever had in a game. As a whole, there are scarier games out there

Condemned had the scariest atmosphere, and the final level/the end cutscene gave me shivers for weeks.

Fear 1 had some good "BOO!" moments, but that was it.

Dead Space has the scariest enemies. Seriously, who wouldve thunk that crazy infected things would bother to stalk you silently and sneak up on you???

And for its age, System Shock 2 is still frightening. I dont know why, when I look at the videos it doesnt seem scary at all, but playing it is so much worse. Also, the reveal of SHODAN scared me big time.

Condemned, FEAR, and Dead Space were definitely not scary... You kidding me?

I kid you not. Maybe I dont have the tolerence of some of you guys, but I also play these games the way they are meant to be played, in the dark, alone, and with the volume turned up on my headphones.

That's how it's done, man. Except I had volume turned up on surround sound, I played these on XBOX360 (except FEAR).

Condemned 1 and 2 were played by me both that way (sitting 4 feet away from a 37'' HDTV too), I find the combat too much fun in those games though, I always want a guy to appear just so I can administer the smackdown on his bum-ass.

Fear was just.. It didn't seem like a scary game, just an action shooter with shadow effects.

Dead Space was interesting - had it been a darker game it'd be scary as shit, but it was so well lit, I actually just liked moving forward not to beat the game, but to see what new kind of levels and stuff they had next. Looks really good imo.

Damn all this talk about silent hill and condemned makes me wish these games were on steam.. :\

You should try Penumbra if you havent already. I enjoyed it beyond being a scary game, and its fairly cheap.

I guess I tend to get drawn into the atmosphere. When playing these games I dont consciously remember that its only a game I'm playing. Thats what made Condemned 1 so creepy for me, yes the combat was very fun, but there were only a few times (generally when I would constantly die) that I thought of it as a game. Did you really think the shopping mall and the farmhouse werent creepy? I commend you if you do. Also, Mr. Tibbits ftl...

Fear I agree wasnt scary for the most parts, but admittedly some bits played the first time made me jump.

Dead Space I brought up simply because of one particularely memorable bit. I was playing some early level, in which you were in a very dark part of the ship with only narrow walkways in platforms. I kill what I think is all of the infected things, and begin exploring the walkways. Because of my camera angle I couldnt see behind me (was aiming my gun). I reach a dead end platform, and just notice two claws being raised right behind me before digging into poor Issac. Certainly made me jump.

lol, look at my first post in this thread last page, I said Penumbra. I beat first one (tech demo), then I bought the other 2, and beat them both. The second (newest) is shit - don't play it. Unless you like a slow as shit machine, and no enemies or barely any story and just platforming levels.

I'll agree that there are 'jump' moments in fear and Condemned, but those can be in any game tbh, you could be playing Viva Pinata and have a ghost just appear on screen and scream really loud - you'll probably jump. That doesn't make it scary.

For the record, I thought the farmhouse was the best level in Condemned one. Hell any game maybe. The level was perfect, the sounds, the lights.. It was just perfect for horror, I was admiring it too much and beating up too many crackheads to be scared.

First play through of the original Resident Evil.

Thief: The Dark Project
Any of the levels with undead, especially Return to Cathedral. Scariest level I've played in any game.

Fear is not scary , it is just creepy , the music is quite eerie , the atmosphere is dark , and that little girl is just ****ing creepy. But still there are no " jump off the chair " moments

I think that there are few different types of "scary" games:

Doom 3 / Dead Space = Things pop out at you a lot, very dark, lots of bloody rooms, lots of "cheap" scares.

Silent Hill games = Everything is very disturbing and messed up, lots of WTF! moments, not very many "cheap" scares.

Resident Evil games (Pre-4) = Lots of suspence, very little ammo and weapons, the ocasional "cheap" scare where things pop out at you.

You might find one kind scary but not the others. I think that overall Silent Hill is the scariest because it manages to make you feel scared because of the setting and not just because you're waiting for the next monster to jump out at you.

System Shock 2

The first two X-COM games were pretty scary at times.

holy tities! i seem to agree 100% with you.

i remember i totally freaked out at the spider "nest" in SS2 and just went batshit insane running all over and shooting everywhere...lol, the good times.

Seriously, Silent Hill 2 was so scary that halfway through the second level I uninstalled the game and threw it away. After many discussions about scary games, I'm generally classified as a weenie, but this game is definitely scary. The scariest part for me was the console-type controls that frankly ruined the game. I couldn't properly watch my back or check around corners which drove me insane. You know something's going to come alive or be lurking around a corner, and I just couldn't properly do it with the control scheme. If the game was modded or otherwise remade to have proper first person controls, I'd take another stab at it.

F.E.A.R. had some Ring-style scares. I still get goose bumps and I've played through it maybe twenty times. The sequels/spinoffs are more of the same.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SOC isn't meant to be scary in its entirety, but the scary parts are teh sketch the first time you play them. As mentioned earlier, one of the underground labs is a spook fest.

As mentioned earlier as well, these games need to be played with the lights off late at night with a good sound system.

A NES adventure game, it had this skeleton with a cape! My brother always played it when I came in to the room so I went back to my room under my blanket :d

Thief: The Dark Project
Any of the levels with undead, especially Return to Cathedral. Scariest level I've played in any game.

Sewer_Spider.jpg

An honorable mention to the first Alien Vs Predator game back in '99. Everyone remembers the first time they got snagged by a face-hugger. And the ensuing bruises they got when the jumped and injured themselves.

RE1 is probably the scariest I ever played.
Opening level when you meet your first zombie still creeps me out.

AvP2 comes in a close second with every level as a Marine. OH **** MOVEMENT ON THE MOTION TRACKER WHAT THE **** IS IT OH CHRIST OH SHI- oh it's just a little bug**** I'M DEAD.

Yeah, the original AvP made me shat my pants as a Marine. The motion sensor made it much worse.

The early areas of Bioshock (Kashmir and Medical Pavillion). I don't think I've played anything scarier, anyway.

The Catacomb level from..which ever Thief game it was in.

Never wanted to turn the screen and sound off as much as I did when playing that level.

Survival horrors these days are too predictable. 'Oh look a long corridor, with flashing lights, I doubt the designers would even DREAM of..oh look a pipe burst and the lights went out, now I hear moaning and screaming...oh look a zombie'

That's when the shiffling slow zombie at the end of the long corridor suddenly start seizuring and shaking, then it's head pops.

Then like 30 sprinting zombies come at you from both sides, and you gotta jump into a vent...

But the vent is ABOVE YOU.

You hold the jump button the hoist yourself into the vent and you look down and the two sides slam into eachother and start ripping eachother apart.

"What?" you think "Why would zombies be killing eachother, and why did that slow zombies head explode?"

Now the adventure begins.

I must admit, Dead Space was awesome.

But it didnt SCARE me. It made me jump once or twice, but I didnt play through the game with adrenaline pumping through me and twitching around every corner.

Unless I was being chased. I just dont like being chased by anything in general. Freaks me out and I panic.

^same with me. I haven't played all of dead space, a decent game but the scares did seem a bit run of the mill for me.

I also panic when being chased it feels weird and awesome at the same time

The bear chase in Condemned 2 = me shitting my pants.

Regenerating necromorph chase in Dead Space is pretty scary. Whilst I agree the game wasn't really terrifying in that sense but more of a jump game, there were some pretty nasty scenes in it, like the man headbutting himself to death down a corridor and various other ''survivor'' scripted events you came across. The scariest moments in Dead Space for me were when the noises and ambiance.

Yeaaah AvP2 was probably one of the most "Jump out of your skin" scary games ever.

Personally the most scariest game I've EVER played was with Stern, he said to play he had to touch my special place.

That was Darkside. Or Sonic. I forget, they're pretty much the same thing.

No good.

Condemned is probably the scariest game I've played.

Ahh so for those who have played SH: homecoming, is it worth getting yay or nay?
