Just wondering who would be interested in doing this? I would be happy to organise it.

Basic rules:
- Would only include the veteran HL2.net members who are trustworthy
- Minimum value of $10 game (you can spend more if you wish!)
- Steam sale items are fine to buy (hopefully get some good bargains)
- Those who enter should post a game genre they like and their Steam game list (or link their public steam community profile) so you don't get a duplicate game.

How it would work:
- Item request to send as a gift in an email with an 'activation link' - all these get sent to me and I will then forward to your secret santa making it totally anonymous.
- Those who fail to buy a gift for their SS after entering will get a lengthy ban, post count reset and sent to behavioural classes run by Pi Mu Rho. One day he asks you to skin a pig with a gherkin, if you don't do it you get the gherkin inserted into you.

We contacted Valve about this and the gifting system works fine using the email system (according to John Cook). Anyway, that's all from me, would anyone like to take part or have any questions?

I would do it for sure, but my gaming PC is ****ed, and I just got this laptop :(

So as i understand it, if you sign up, you have to buy a gift for someone (anonymously) and you have the chance of receiving a free game by someone else (anonymously)

correct?

If you buy a gift, you receive one back, everyone is anonymous though.

I am all up for it. We do know for whom we are going to buy the game, aye?

Er, no, it's not. You have to know who you're buying a game for otherwise you risk buying them a game they already own.

Well then this isn't secret Santa, now is it? It's just gift giving..

Sorry, I can't participate. No money.

However, you can all feel free to buy me games like ArmA 2 and Left 4 Dead, as well as Left 4 Dead 2. MUAHAHAHAHA.

What? No... or at least, how I play it and am currently playing it with two groups of friends at the moment (uni mates and another forum community), everyone puts forward their name, they get compiled into a list, the list is mixed up and everyone is then sent a name and address to send a gift to. You remain anonymous to the person you give a gift to, much like the person that sends a gift to you remains unknown to you.

Hmm, I would be interested, but as other people said a maximum price should be set as well, which may limit the games one can buy (no MW2), but it would make things a little more even in terms of gift value.

Also, rig specs might also be useful just so no-one gets a game they cant run..

I'll participate too. I still have money left on my VISA pre-paid. Maximum of $20 though, I don't know how much is left.

Yeah, you give a gift. As a secret Santa. You then in turn receive a gift from... dun dun dun... another secret Santa.

Sounds like a cool idea. I'd be in, why not...

A very clear step by step of the gift-buying process might be good, so people don't blow their identity at that stage.

I hope you guys like fruitcake. Just joking.

Everyone should trade their useless electronics. Like if you have RAM that you can no longer use, you should see if someone can use it... then the receiving person - they might not have something you need, but someone else would. So instead of trading between 2 people, it's a pool, and everyone gets something. Just a Utopian thought.

Santa is secret to the person who recieves the present. Santa knows who he gives presents too.

Problem: Can gifts be traded between localities, bearing in mind the refusal of some publishers to trade games in Europe?

Not that this effects me. Sorry guys, but I'm not earning at the moment :/

edit: Also a shame that the big Steam sale is this weekend and this probably won't get rolling until it's over.

I'm not quite sure what you mean but as far as I know, as long as you can buy the game, it can be gifted to anyone anywhere.

I'll do it, if I'm considered a HL2net veteran.

Also the current Steam sales are the 'early holiday sales', not the proper xmas shop sale like last year, expect more deals closer to xmas. I'm just getting this set up before December starts so people can prepare.

Secret santa is simple, one last explanation: I give you a name, you buy that person a gift, they receive the gift and don't know who it is from. You also receive a gift, you don't know who it is from. Therefore: everyone gets a gift - no one knows who bought it for them!

Gifts can be sent anywhere.

I could put a guide up for the official thread, sure. Just want to see how many people we can get involved. 15 people would be nice (or more).

I left the maximum $ cost off, in case an individual wanted to buy someone a game and they liked that member especially and wanted to pay that extra bit more. I expect most people to be sensible and pay the base $10-13 or whatever. I'm assuming common sense will prevail and everyone won't go buying MW2 in a recession!?

I wish there was a way to figure out what things might go up for sale. I hope to god they have an awesome ArmA 2 sale. I'm pissed that I missed the 20 dollar sale for it.

I'll be in, most likely. I love giving gifts. Ahh, those TF2 sales~

You give a gift and receive one too RJMC, so if you play and receive a gift...someone won't be getting one. That isn't nice you grinch!

Anymore names? We're missing a ton of regulars from this thread...I'm surprised they're avoiding it. Spread the word people!

is just that I have no money :(

and you know that christmas is just not only about that,is about giving gift to RJMC *puppy eyes*

Get out of my thread.

We have 14 people already (some people have posted without alluding to if they would be interested. Farrow, virus, dvs, zombieturtle, ravioli, Theantipop?

I think we'll hit 20 people easily, which means this could be a lot of fun. That's a big enough pool to make things very secret.

Count me in, hope this turns out to be good fun and actually work. I'll have to check back later to see when this thing actually starts :)

So how will this actually work with steam? Doesnt it tell you who gifted the game to you?
