Short Story Contest! [DISCUSSION THREAD]

I think we're waiting till that sonuvabitch Dodds finishes his story before he finally closes the competition.

Okay, this has dragged on for a while. I know I'm not going to have time to write a story. If anyone else is thinking of doing anything, post it before midnight on Tuesday 8th. Sorry about all this!

Durrrhurr Tuesday 15th. 8th was above 15th on the calendar and yeah I'll get my coat now

Well, what do you know. I was looking at June. Must be Tuesday 12th!

I just saw the thread in the Lounge, never mind.

And you get EXCITING MYSTERY BOOKS because I didn't bother with it for so long.

Obviously, that was the last Short Story Contest (unless anyone else is willing). An idea, however, struck me...

Would anyone be interested in a halflife2.net book club?

Could be a good idea, though we aren't the most reliable bunch when it comes to deadlines and such. What kind of books are we talking about?

Anything, but probably a mix of interesting modern novels, sci-fi, and the more obscure classics. Books that were on my mind included: Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, Between the Acts by Virginia Woolf, Civilisation and its Discontents by Sigmund Freud, The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon, Halting State by Charles Stross, Mandeville's Travels (Penguin Classics modern translation), Continent or Quarantine by Jim Crace, the first or first two books of Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne, Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, England, Engand by Julian Barnes...maybe some decent non-fiction too, like Geoff Dyer's Yoga For People Who Can't Be Bothered To Do It or Imperial Life in the Emerald City by Rajiv Chandrasekaran. Suggestions welcome, obv.

Wow. I've never heard of anything on that list. I was actually expecting that I wouldn't, somewhat

Only problems I foresee is the obvious:

a) Not enough people participate (I really think this kind of stuff should be put up in the News forum)

b) Deciding on books

But that comes with the territory. I'm totally game.

Hey, I'd do this if the books being read are available at a public library. Though I've never heard of the books Sulkdodds listed either.

They'd probably be at a public library, but we could always do a check period where everyone makes sure that the book is available locally before we embark on it. As for reading speed I was thinking maybe five weeks allotted to each book?

A very interesting idea, we would certainly have to make sure they're available - I have a lot of problems finding some older prints with the Bookstores I have close to home.

But that said, I'd be in for it.

Five weeks? Is that all? I'm currently in the middle of the Shining, and I've been at it for over a month. It's not so much that I'm a physically slow reader, but I can't read all the time, the mood has to strike me.

I love reading so I'd do it. I'm a fast reader and can usually finish a book in one sitting.
