Skin colors

Still, call me overly sensitive (anyone who falls on the obvious and unfunny retort is a humourless arse) but if all the voices of City 17's inhabitants are American and NOT Russian/E. European, I'd be happier to hand everything over to the Combine than those filthy Capitalist neo-imperialist pig-dogs.
 
Watching the strider video, the resistance fighters have sort of half-american accents. I hate the way everything has to be Americanised in the entertainment industry (not just HL2) these days.
 
Who gives two shits, companies are very wary of insulting their fan base while at the same time they want to make the best game possible, this is slowly reminding me of the SOF debacle where killing whites in the first level was punished and killing arab innocents in later levels wasn't, who ****ing cares?

If you look hard enough you will always find inequality because that is pretty much what the whole of the human condition and nature focuses around. Lets have the game come out, if it is packed full of racist slogans and minorities are purged then we'll all have a witch hunt, i'll cook a fry up with some fish and chips and a steak, you guys organise the curry, chinese, hamburger, mango, coconut, vodka, sourkraut, wine, whale blubber, barby, shrimp, dog, sheeps head, matzah, insect and coca.

cuz is all the models are very similiar look very repetitive

Well, it's the ENGLISH version of HL2... I don't mind it at all, it's unimportant...
And those resistanse fighters could be from America, it may have been completely taken over? That's why we are in Russia? (Wherever it is)

Well, considering the USA has 300 million people and the UK 65 million, it certainly wouldn't be odd if the people in Half Life 2 are American rather than from the British.

Also, the characters in Half Life 1 had American accents.

Seriously i think this is such a non issue, it reminds me of an arguement i had with some guy claiming RATM was a racist band that hated whites, i was like, dude, they hate inequality quite harping on about race and have a little think about whats realistic. Treating someone in a different way due to race is racist whatever.

We defined racism in my philosophy classes as prejudice + action - as in you pre judge someone due to their race and on that note treat them in some way.

If you think that screaming for all ethnicities to be included in a computer game doesn't fit into that then you are missing the point, you are judging that people will be offended and judging that the game would require the diversity you are trying to impose, your action is to complain about it. Quite jumping up and down already, :bounce:
 
hell yeah, Shanghai is incredible, very hot right now and lots of bicycles coming out, even more than the normal couple of million a day i see. I am going home soon though so i am not on the run from anything unlike quite of few of the westerners here.

i'm in china to do an internship at a magazine for 3 months, gonna be a writer, getting published and everything. Only then i'm back home to travel round Europe for 5 weeks, then Reading festival then it's time to goto UCL for an English Dregree.

Maybe the game designers never wanted to put varieties of nationalities. Because of racist people out there or maybe they want common types of nationalities in regular games. Wait what am i saying. Most be descrimination or To difficult to deal with.

I know what you mean, Rupert (can I call you Rupert? :)), when you say that this is a non-issue, but for me this isn't a matter of racial equality but more: This is an Eastern European city, I don't care if there are some American fellows there but the majority ought to have E. European/Russian accents. Partly for authenticity, but mainly because Russian accents are better than American ones :)
 
Call me what you like man, clearly Lord High Ruler isn't going to work out, on the accent is better thing...racist racist racist...;(, i have a few Eastern European friends and the accent does rock but to be honest it won't bother me, for the sake of reality then yeah, there should be ethnic correctness but where my arguement lies isn't stupid American self worship, intelligent people can see through that, it's the implication of racism where there isn't any.

You could spout a load of crap about institutional racism meaning i am blinded to the truth of racist bigotry but that's bullshit there are larger issues to worry about than getting every race in some game and it pisses me off when people unthinking blow things out of proportion in this arena. I am white so apparently i am free from racism (this isn't true but that's another story) and so perhaps i do not know the full story on how it affects people but frankly i think that is bullshit too. Everyone knows what it is like to be irrationally persecuted at some level, i recognise this and in my mind it isn't a decent thing for people to do to each other....HOWEVER, crying wolf is the worst goddamn thing anyone can do in a fight for equality because it can weaken a point so drastically, if a million people choose to take an interest in race relations and all focus on one case that is unfounded then it shall turn a lot of them off the issue, no one wants to back an exploited cause and no one has time for idiocy.
I ahve been babbling and may have lost my thread but i doubt it somehow, i would write an essay but people should be paying me to do that, or at least iving me qualifications.

1. The Imperialist thing was a joke, dude - I'm sure you realised that but I thought I'd better clarify :)
2. As for the accent thing - how is that racist? Or have I missed the irony train? Thing that annoys me is that in so many entertainment forms people have American accents all over the place. Fine, this is usually because it is set in America but when it isn't it's just very boring and jars somewhat with the setting. Yes I'm being pernicketty but I know it's something that will irritate me.
3. You're absolutely right - racists are morons and their views are skewed and apalling. Plus political correctness often goes over-board, but it has its uses.
However on-topic: I'm not suggesting Valve do models for the sake of political corectness, just for variety. I'd find it a little dull if they were all white American men. Of course, this wouldn't really infringe on the overall experience too much, but a lot of the time, it was the little touches that made HL1 so special.
By the way, there actually is a handicapped character: Eli Vance has one leg.
 
I wish that there were more non-mercenary/non-thug/non-crap Aussie characters in games...

I looked at the videos and... screenshots... on different sites and it looks like City 17 will have a diverse population of white men, black men, and others. This confuses me a bit...

1. Isn't City 17 set in Eastern Europe? What are black people/hispanics/asians doing in Eastern Europe? I'm not being racist, it's just that if you've ever been to an Eastern European country, there aren't many black people/hispanics/asians there. Maybe the resistance team IS American, but then why would they be so poorly equipped?

2. Where are all the women? (This question has been asked already.) I wonder, where DID they go? Did Valve want to be accused of "allowing violence toward women" when they show them get shot by the combine soldiers? If so, I don't like that idea one bit.

It's a double edged sword

Do you put minorities in and be accused of racism and putting them in for the sake of it, or for the token black guy, chinese guy etc. and so on

Or do you not bother and remind yourself its just a video game

If you made a game where the hero character was in a wheelchair or disabled, you'd be bound to get the do gooders whining that your making light of their situation. If you don't you get the same people whining that you didn't.

You can't win, so the best thing to do is simply ignore the whiners and just do it. It is after all only-a-game.
 
If the game is taking place in an East European Setting, I would expect most of the characters to be Eastern European.

I wouldn't want to see an African or Chinese civilian in the streets, for example.

Do you know much about Europe? There are many European countries that have significant minority populations. Not generally many Asians, but lots of Africans and people from the Middle East.

there is something odd about the lack of children when you first enter City-17. Maybe there is something wrong about the lack of women as well?

i seem to remember hearing somewhere that city 17 is like a ... last bastion of human resistance or something? so it would make sense that maybe people would go there from different places... or be driven there... or soemthing.. ehhh just my little bit of trying to put the game in a context that would keep the race thing from being purly PC ..political correctness ... when over done, pisses me off heh

I've been to Russia and the surrounding areas of the ex-Soviet Union. While there ARE Africans and Middle Eastern people there, you'd most likely see a single minority for every hundred white people... especially if it's a small city. This is all Eastern Europe, I'm not talking about countries like England or Spain or Ireland. How many minorities do you think live in someplace like Belarus or Poland?
