Skin colors

Although I would like to have all of these eastern european people speaking with appropriate accents I would have to ponder the following questions:

If they are all from the same non-english-speaking country why are they all speaking english? Do they just want to practice? The scientists can be explained, because English is a likely choice for a place where people of many nationalities have come to work on an important project... but why everyone else (even the combine)? If you're going to make them all speak english for no reason why even bother using an accent? I mean, the realism is already ruined... why bother trying to recruit a bunch of people with the right accents?

I'd like to see someone use the built-in subtitles feature to make a mod set in another country where they actually use the appropriate language. They could even give players the option of playing in the original language (for people that happen to speak that language), in english (for the lazy americans that don't want to read), or the original language + english subtitles. It would definately take a lot of work, but it would be interesting.

wow

honestly this thread is rediculous. the only time where this kind of thread is called for is when a historically accurate game is being made. if a company is making a wwII game in africa they should have certain skin colors/accents vs. certain skin colors/accents. the same goes to a war game in the pacific or whatever. i don't know if you noticed but halflife2 isn't real. its a completely fictional game about one world (pretty close to ours) getting invaded by aliens and all the other craziness that comes with it. there is no political correctness. its a game. City 17 isn't real. It just looks like its in eastern europe. If in the halflife universe, they choose to put americans with likewise accents as the major population of the city then so be it. its just part of their FICTIONAL universe so who really cares?

I don't even know where to start with this thread..

wow, this thread went all haywire, people accusing each other of racism. personally i think it would be nice to see variety in the game. i don't like seeing the same scientist model in different levels (ala hl1). it detracts from the immersion. fps are appealing because of the immersion. you feel like you're actually there. i was kinda aggravated that splinter cell: pandora tomorrow used american accents for basically everyone even though Fisher travels to some exotic locales. In some respects I would rather have to read subtitles than have everyone speak an american accent.

Good idea!

I couldn't agree more!

there are alot of nigglers in this thread

I can understand you concern, and while everyone else seems to find it either funny or not important, it really is. This world at the moment is very divided when it comes to religion and belief, as well as ethnic background.

And whilst you Americans sit at home thinking killing people is for all the good of your country, open your eyes.

Actually there are mexicans in this game. It's just for some reason valve decided to call them zombies.

Wow do some of you people have axes to grind against overdone political correctness or what. AgentXen starts a rather innocent tread about skin colour options citing - 'for variety', not complaining about anything or accusing Valve of racism in any way and you people carry on like he was making a big fuss and offended or something. It's just a shame that a simple thread can get hijacked so easily when people read what they want to read instead of actually responding to whats written.

It's almost like there's a pre-rehearsed "political correctness whinge" bursting to come out at the drop of a hat... Pretty sad.

For one

there are alot of nigglers in this thread

that is not appropriate, even if he is trying to make a joke (you have some wit there).
I am only arguing a point towards people who have replied with 'who cares'.

Half-Life 2 takes place in Russia. Your reply is the exact sort if thing I'm talking about. :p

I think you missed his point......

Lets say there is an english speaking secondary character.....his accent doesnt really matter.

Why would an american company give him a british accent?

Who would you want to please more 300 million or 65 million?

America is the largest consumer/producer of all of this media....so why wouldnt it be "americanised".

This is retarded. Why the big fuss over languages? Didn't you see the video where the Gman speaks chinese. I think its safe to assume that you can't get the game in a variety of languages, not just english.
And if they decide not to put it in different languages then its up to them, they are an American company, based in America. There are plenty of Japanese games I would love to play but can't get in English so I don't, get the hell over it.
As far as skin color, if they put a big mix of white, black, hispanic etc. There would be to many people bitching that "There are to many evil [black/Hispanic/Chinese] guys that I have to shoot, why not more evil white guys" or something to that effect. You can't please everyone.
