Does it concern anyone else that many small countries are acquiring nuclear capability? During the cold war, only nations of great power weilded such weapons; but soon, everyone and their mother will have a nuke. And if one small country sets of a nuke against another (namely Iran nuking Israel), the world would pretty much be obliterated. I suppose, though, that if that ever does happen, we probably won't have time to think about what happened.

does not compute

israel has over 200 nukes and could make iran a radioactive glass crater if it chose to do so .. they havent signed a single treaty and are not accountable to anybody Iran on the other hand has signed the non-proliferation act and has abided with the IAEA (more or less)

oh and the notion that soon all small countries will have nukes is rediculous ..it's not like you simply set up shop and voila you have yourself a nuke ..Iran for example, even though it's been working on a program for close to 20 years has yet to make a single nuke ..in fact US intelligence believes it's at least 10 years away from doing so

in any event why is it acceptable for any nation to possess nuclear weapons?

Nations develop nukes when they feel threatened.

If Iran had nukes, would the US and Israel attack them?

But yes, if Iran mastered the technology, it's possible that they would share the technology around with some of the US's other enemies, accelerating proliferation.

which is what the US did with israel ...so tit for tat I guess

Aye... D:

It's been said that Pakistan leaked information to North Korea, despite crazy Kim's claims of having "100% indigneous technology"

Lets all take a look at what the non-proliferation treaty actually says, in short: "thy shall not aid others in making nukes, or spread nukes to other countries".
How wonderfull Iran signed it so that it wont "spread em". I wonder who Israel would spread its nukes to, considering its only allies have more nukes than the rest of the world,.. hmmm
It doesnt make countries a threat, or else both India and Pakistan should join that threat list..

All this talk about nuking this and that is fearmongoring, no nation will actually nuke, since we're all human and nations fear the consequenses. I'm more afraid of terrorist groups and such obtaining a nuke since they have nothing to lose and dont care for the result (not to mention they are "nationless" meaning not representing a specific nation, thes who to punish for the crime?..).
Both Israel and Iran are human nations, and either of them lobbing nukes pretty much means their nation ceases to exist => who would do that?.
This goes for any nuclear-capable nation; hence the actual fear should lie with rogue groups or militants/terrorists.

The only "fear" in certain nations obtaining nukes imo is, if they commonly support certain militant groups and/or terrorist groups. They could "leak" a nuke, yet even that would be far off and extremely unlikely, since they would have to be "insanely in-human" wishing their opponents such a fate.

-no nation will actually nuke

The Americans did it once.

I'm actually glad they did back then, though i would have chosen different targets, rather than civilian cities.
Funny enough nukes have scaled down wars, since everybody is scared of big sides in full-out wars.
I wonder however, how long that will last..

As Carlos Mencia said
"We have the nukes you seek, and guess what bitch? We've used them!".

not that it matters because they didnt sign the non proliferation treaty anyways ..nor have they abided by UN security council resolutions asking them to be accountable to the IAEA (specifically resolution 487) nor have they complied with various international calls for disclosure ..not too mention that developing wmd in secret which was a violation of international law

anyways, all nations should be held accountable for the weapons they possess equally and without prejudice

Still in reality doesnt make them any more of a threat than any other nation with nukes..

anyways, omg, read this:

Dont you find it somewhat sickly funny how certain countries name their nukes/nuke types?

India:
Smiling Buddha

England:
Red Beard
Violet Club
Red Snow
Blue Peacock

Russia:
Tsar Bomba
Spanker
Satan
Scalpel

United States:
Little Boy
Fat Man
Thin Man
Honest John
Hound Dog Missile
Midgetman
Minuteman

My favourite is "Smiling Buddha" :p

? you didnt get the memo? NK doesnt have nukes ..who needs nukes when their glorious leader can move freakin mountains with his voice alone

"Jesus said, 'I tell you the truth: if you have faith and do not doubt, you can say to this mountain, "Go throw yourself into the sea!"'
-Matthew21:21

'If anyone says to this mountain, "Go throw yourself into the sea," and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him."
-Mark 11:22

OH SHI- THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON OF ALL

omg I'm so going to try that on the way home from work while stuck in traffic ..

driver: "huh? how did I end up in lake ontario?"

I think Sweden could do nukes in the 50's but we put it on "hold", so you know, you better keep shopping at IKEA... OR ELSE!

Bwahahah!

May I suggest Iran name its first nuke "The Prince of Persia"? ;)

I only hope that one lands close to me. I'd rather die instantly in the blast than be melted alive or die from radiation sickness over time.

Unfortunately with the world as it is, it's only a matter of when - not if.

IMO many small countries are more responsible than certain superpowers *ahem*. :frog:

Bwahahah!

You got it all wrong man, we switched production from nukes TO IKEA furniture. Psychological warfare is teh shit.

I propose America names one of their nukes "Dr Kleiner's secret project."

The main problem with nukes, and I don't many of you'll disagree, is that if we (ie, your country) has nukes, then it's fine/cause for celebration. However, if your enemy has nukes, then it's bad. Really, really bad.

And that is one of the reasons why I dislike nukes. Warfare should be kept conventional.

Truthage. :afro:

You call post-war France and Britain "great powers"?

EDIT:
About Sweden and Nukes:
During the 1950s and 1960s, Sweden seriously investigated nuclear weapons, intended to be deployed over coastal facilities of an invading enemy (the Soviet Union). A very substantial research effort of weapon design and manufacture was conducted resulting in enough knowledge to allow Sweden to manufacture nuclear weapons. A weapon research facility was to be built in Studsvik. Saab made plans for a supersonic nuclear bomber, the A36.[citation needed] However Sweden decided not to pursue a weapon production program and signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

:( We should've gotten nukes, then the Danish wouldn't have been so cocky.

We'd still be cocky because you come over here and buy all our booze! ;-)

D:

People have a tendency to use words when without weapons, and a tendency to use weapons rather than words when with weapons.

In a funny way, nukes have "stopped" world-wars. The second proper defense vs nukes is invented, the whistle is blown and theres a return of some larger-scaled wars.
