Well, since its 3 months since I gave up smoking today I just wanted to know what everyones views are on smoking? Do you smoke? Have you given up? How hard did you find it? What do you think will happen with regards to smoking in society etc (nyc & belfast both banning smoking in public)?

Personally I used to love smoking cigarettes, but now I've given up I cant imagine ever starting again.

Discuss.

One of my "mates" at Uni started smoking because everyone else in his house did. I think it's a pathetic trend started by sheep who want to fit in then get addicted due to their weak mindedness.

I don't particulary want to be in a room with someone who smokes, because it stinks like hell. I don't really understand why they want to do it, it's pretty much paying to kill yourself. I'm not going to go out of my way to try and stop someone smoking because it's up to them, and it's their choice, but I defintely don't approve of it.

I don't smoke..never have..don't plan to.

Too expensive of a habit for how boring it is...

i've smoked before but i've never gotten addicted to the stuff. i do like a good cigar every now and then, they do some excellent ones in camden and islington market on saturdays. but apart from that it's no smoking for me thanks. i wouldn't advise kids to do it, but it's ok to try just to see what all the fuss is about (not much).

I'm afraid I regard smoking as an act of infantile oralism.

Or something that certain people, lacking in the neuron department, do to look cool. Still.

seriously tho, yeah smoking is very stupid, and often the 'cool' thing to do, but once your addicted it doesnt matter if you're trying to look cool or not.

I stupidly got addicted to cigarettes very easy and hid it from my best mate for 4 years because I knew how much he despised smoking so I wasnt trying to look 'cool' at all.

I personally think smoking should be banned world wide because it serves no purpose and kills so many people world wide.. in the same beat however so does alcohol, and look at the oppinions of that stuff.

so craig what are you planning to buy with all that money you saved on cigs?

Well, yes, there is the addiction angle...

Problem is, if they banned smoking, they'd just end up with a new black market...

i think banning smoking in public areas is a good compromise. kids will grow up without having to put up with smoke whenever they go out and it'll be less visual, thus it won't be as appealing if they have to go all the way into some quiet corner just to look 'cool'.

True.

Banning public smoking == good idea.

Banning smoking full stop == bad idea (at the moment, anyway).

Hmmm?

Well.. I was going to save it all up, but then thought 'nah'

So far I've bought:

1. A Yamaha Keyboard - £150 (played guitar for 6 years, always wanted to play keyboard also).

2. Graphics Tablet - £50

3. Numerous nights out

That's how I got my Dad to quit. We sat down and figured out how much money a year he'd save if he didn't spend it on ciggys.

Turned out it was something like $5000.

Greed saved the day.

Smoking is bad, but not nearly as bad as all these annoying anti-smoking commercials.

I think we had this discussion long ago.

Personally, I see smoking as the only option if you want to inhale thousands off toxins at once in a short amount of time. I mean, how else could you do it? Bathing in oil is sticky, and not very effiecent way of killing yourself. Drinking acid isnt exactly a good idea either, unless you really want to die fast and painfull. And it to is ineffiecent, as you only get one lethal toxin in you. You could try to suck in air from a car exhaust, but once again, mostly just carbon dioxide (if you have a modern car).

Nope, the cigarett is the perfect delivery system for lethal toxins. Nothing on earth beats it! Hell, its worse than Komodo dragon saliva! And who could say no to that, its the perfect weapon. And everybody KNOWS todays kids love weapons. Chemical warfare is one of the most intriguing topics, one very active today. So its no wonder if you think on it. At least Saddam doesnt make them, most are genuinly American.

well, since no one has said this yet, congratulations craigweb2k

Unfortunately, my dad smokes and has been smoking ever since I can remember. Whenever I get on him about, he just talks about how he smokes to relieve stress. I don't know if my dad spends 5000 dollars a year on smoking, but maybe I'll try the financial tactic like Brian Damage.

Heh... I just remembered, did anyone catch the new South Park last week (I think it was last week)? The one about smoking?

South Park is such a good show. It's almost always right in its political standpoints.

I like how Rob Reiner was constantly eating...eating is a bigger problem than smoking in the US...

Thanks FortisVir :)

Money definitely is the best angle to think about when contemplating giving up. I know it was a big deciding factor for me (as well as a minor health scare at 22, which make me stop and think 'hmm').

Your dad has probably weighed up the pro's and con's himself and his demon's are keeping him under control so the more 'pushing' from you the better (people saying if they want to smoke they'll smoke is bullshit, they're usually not educated about cigarettes if they choose to smoke without even attemting giving up).

I know when I was thinking about giving up I'd think up a 'good' scenario in my head i.e. (you'll have loads of money when you give up) and then without realising it I'd think up a 'bad' scenario at the same time i.e. (yes, but.. when you give up smoking you'll have HORRIBLE cravings for ages!).

Once you educate yourself you realise that giving up isn't that bad / stressful at all.

Best thing to tell your old man I'd say is that think about the life of a smoker (he's using 'stress' as an example) and you just need to be able to counter every point he makes. A smoker is usually under more stress (thinking about their next cigarette) than a person who doesnt smoke, because when they're in a situation where they cant smoke (at work for instance) they get stressed out..

BLEH.. end rant.

I smoke when I drink.
A ciggy helps Mickeys go down easy.

I smoke, but I plan on giving up in the near future...

As for the financial situation I spend less than £100 a year because I roll my own and only smoke around 7 a day. Sometimes I go without for a day or two. It's not like I physically crave them, getting in bad moods or anything... I've been without them for over a week when visiting my parents before (they don't know). However I do find them mentally addictive... I actually enjoy the smoking part...It's relaxing with a coffee, and can relieve stress... they also help to keep you awake during all night assignments.

The reason I got started was because I used to only smoke when I was drinking, and the reason I'll give up is because I don't want to be smoking at 30, giving kids the wrong impression and then dying of cancer.

I'm still only 21 and been smoking properly for a couple of years, giving up now should have no long term health effects.

But I do agree it's not a habit that should be encouraged, and it certainly isn't "cool".

I smoke once in a while when I'm having a drink with friends or something. I treat it the same way as alcohol basically - only do it on special occasions.

The difference is...alcohol isnt damaging if you only have it every so often...smoking si.

I hate cigarettes. They seem have enslaved millions, but when you think about it, you're sticking a small stick filled with some foreign plant in your mouth, and then setting it on fire.
Plus, people at work who smoke get about 5 extra breaks a day. So if i want to slack off as much as them, i have to damage my body.

so do many things we (people) do, but we still do em. Smoking just so happens to be worse because its enjoyable to do, its additcive, and loads of people do it. What you've gotta remember is up till 40 years ago people thought these things were good for you (even doctors advised you to smoke in some places) and attitudes are changing slowly, but its gonna take time.

I quit about a month ago. Then I had about 4 cigarettes on friday night while hammered. I need to take a break from drinking in order to quit smoking.

I feel the same way.

i don't know where you got your info or whether or not it's right, but my girlfriend has been studying obesity in college a lot and from what she's told me, i think you're wrong...but i don't have any evidence and i'm not gonna look any sites up.

she also told me that obesity among children is increasing at a faster rate in the US than anywhere else in the world, though...so even if you're right, as long as nothing is done about rising childhood obesity, we'll be the fattest.

I do still smoke pot (1-3 times a week). But I do not smoke cigeretts becuase I dont think it worth it... but in weeds case.. it is :).

BTW - New forum look is gay... i like the old way much better... Just my 2 cents...

i don't smoke.. can't really stand it personally.. hmm.. i do have friends that smoke but they know i don't like it and normally they are understanding of that.

i just think theres enough health hazardous things in this world.. and theres no real reason to add smoking to that list.. but mehh.. how is a smoker to understand this is something i don't know and have given up on trying to explain since the popular reply is "if i want to smoke, i will.. its not like im stealing money from u for my expensive habit"

what they fail to realize is the burden they become on the healthcare system and here in Canada, everyone pays for healthcare in one way or another.. :|
