Steam did an update today, 1/12/04 (I am in Australia), and now when I go to "Play Games" then click "HL2", it says "preparing to play half life 2", goes through the motions, checks the CD and then its like I never tried to start the game...???

It will do exactly the same thing for Counter Strike: Source, it just won't start...

I have been playing it fine for the last 2 weeks or so....

Any Answers? It didn't start doing ti until Steam Updated itself today...

ay me too :( i like updates which go and broke what aint broken!

Yup, same. Me = PO'd

I sure hope this isn't a chronic problem with Steam updates...I paid for a working game... :)

And for a platform that updates itself successfully... :borg:

Wtf

Same problem here. Is anyone listening out there? A total bummer. I just want to play HL2 singleplayer (for the second time). I just got into Nova Prospekt day before yesterday and now I can not play it at all.

Yeah seriously what the fark? This is just beautiful. Great job Valve, really, realy top work.

If you'll excuse me my head is about to explode.

I'm also in Australia too, maybe Valve have something against us?

Exact same problem here. I wish Valve would stop jacking off and get this thing working. I was playing css just fine and then this update and i cant do a thing. Try deleting ur clientregistry.blob file and see if that helps you, it didnt help me tho.

just registered to share my frustration. i love updates that make a game unplayable. It was working just fine...

thanks valve...

i was going to go vent on the steam forum..but surprise..it wasnt working.

I'm in the same boat. It seems I can run non-Source games. Here's a theory: how many with this problem modified their HL2 config file to try to get around the stuttering problem (or just for fun)?

This is absolutely ridiculous.

My patience is seriously wearing thin. Something tells me they shut down the Steam forum intentionally.

Maybe shutting down the Steam forum is a good sign -- maybe it means they are aware of the problem and shut the forums down to avoid a deluge of adolescent rants.

I have the same problem - I'm in New Zealand. Sounds like someone forgot to push an update over to Asia-Pac?

SteamPower is proving to be an accurate way to describe Valves technology. I won't be buying any more of their software.

yes. when CS:source didnt boot up, i was like "meh, no problem, I'll play some HL2" but then that didn't work either
i hope they fix this soon
i am sad

i hate to break it to you boys, literally i HATE to break it to you, im in canada right now and i've got the same facking problem. it would be nice if valve would atleast acnowledge(kant spell) the problem in their news section though, ya know tell us they knew they F_cked up and were trying to remedy this shat. i hope they fix it soon cause im jonesin for my cs fix aaargghhh!!!!!!

Im in California and nothings changed for me I still get the memory error BS.Valve probably anticipated another bonehead patch and shutdown their forums because of it. :x :x :x :x :x

nope i have the bug as well [ disneyland ca usa ]
Updated = WTF = 9mm to monitor

the US has the bug as well , as far as steam is concerned, it worked great , its the A$$hats that farked up the code that was distributed... good thing i found this site or the 9mm to my monitor might have been real .
guess ill go back to shooting nerf balls at my roomates cat ...

im retail, suffering from the issue :( nothing runs after updating

Yup same here, it something with steam alright and the steam forums are down, but still why wont it let us play whats going on.

HL2 DM doesn't even boot now...argh...

Another Canadian here with retail version.

Lot's of people are bitching about it in the Deathmatch update thread in the news section. Looks like these idiots have shut down the game for their entire customer base. My guess is that the AsiaPac region is moaning the loudest because the rest of the world is at work or asleep.

I thought I'd add some information to this issue. There's obviously some users having tons of fun because I can see them via the server browser.

Any common denominators? Everyone that I know that has this issue have AMD cpus with Steam purchases. We differ on everything else, SP levels, mobo types, etc. I guess retail users are affected as well.

Just some data to add.

Well this cracks me up.....A perfect example never ever to link a single player game to a online watchdog...lol...ummm Valve, HL2 won't start now....I'm calling the better buisness bureu (wow I think I might) :naughty:

before i updated, i was already having problems
mainly, i couldn't refresh my server list and thus couldn't find a server to play in anyway
suddenly everyone began disconnecting from the server, and shortly after my steam crashed
forcing me to update... and now... even more screwd. awesome.

Gheysauce

Yep, Its official, Valve is really blowing Steam up my ass on this one. If I had just left CS:S running while I went to the store I would be playing the older working version right now.

ARGH! Urge to kill, growing....

I have AMD and iNTEL and I have the same problem (retail version). I noticed it creates a minidump of the crash with the filename D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\$USERNAME$\half-life 2\deathmatch\Steam__104858__2004_12_1T6_29_22C1109.mdmp

I might delete the half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf and download it again because it finished in about 4 minutes and I never maxed out my connection on steam, although it is early here so most are sleeping or waking up for work.

Same here so at least we are not alone. HL2 and HL2:deathmatch refuse to load. Some are saying that if you validate the files via Steam it will unlock them.

Here is my rant regarding such actions. Why, oh why do we the end user have to possibly manually validate an update that was forced upon us by a program (Steam) that most of us would rather see the back of. We have no choice, we have to run Steam to use the game but Valve has the option of sending us patches which are often, as proved, buggy.

Considering the problems with stutterintg that users have been experiencing, you would have thought that Valve might have take extra care over this one, but it seems not.
