steam updated now HL2 won't start

to answear that i would guess from what i have observed that its because they all share the engine files to run themselves so the error is possibly caused by a modification to the engine code.

on another note i am experiencing no diffuculty's on my end, never have had any with any of it, guess i am a lucky bastard.

not boasting just letting u guys know that the problem is not 100 percent effecting everyone.

and i wouldn't be surprised if valve are working on a hotfix
 
I have the damn problem, Here in Australia and a retail version of the game. Pisses me off, i had a day off work so i thought ill go pic up the game and play it, now i havent been able to touch the thing all day just to play the GOD DAMN SINGLE PLAYER PART of the GAmE!!!!!!!!!! AND then they have the nerve to shut down their forum and they havent even got a post up on their site. Talk about putting your head in the sand.

I'm sure there's at least a couple of software engineers consuming mass amounts of caffeine and working the night through to get a fix to us.

I'm a little perplexed how something that affects so many users could have possibly made it out the door. I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist but it certainly seems like Steam users are Valve's Quality Assurance department.
 
Yes, it works! Half-Life works that is... this is bullshit. I've never been so pissed before at valve but this has cut it. I better not download the whole gcfs over because you ignorant fools corrupted the gcfs with your stupid "suprise ruin the game" update.

I have Half Life 2 on 2 computers at home (nocd), both connected by wireless cards and using the same network.... both updated the new steam patch and one works and the other doesn't???
What does that tell us?

Well I say if they are not sure they need to start upping the assurance....if they need more time they NEED to take it..other than that...if they do know about these situations it would be uber of them to say some or alot of you could or will get these errors. So then the some or lot of us can go yep happened here.

Oh for the love of ****, i only got over the audio stuttering problem today and could finally start getting into the game, now this.

The tiny threads of respect i had for valve and steam are well and truely torn now.
 
By the way, the Steam forums are back online so lets hope for some news.

I can tell you that HL2 CS:S HL2DM HL:S are working.

Played HL2 CS:S and FL2DM.
1. Stutter seems to be less. HL2 is slightly smoother.
2. They still can't get the sv_autosave to work. ie, sv_autosave 0 still wont switch off the autosave. Therefore, stutter.
3. For F*ck sake i can only play each of them for 15 minutes. Read memory error crap. Crash out to window.

Are they even trying?

Ok im in australia none of my steam games are working after the last update. cant connect to steam. My friend can connect. Why isnt it working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm from Denmark in Europe and I got the retail version of HL2.

Since the release of HL2 I have been enjoying to play HL2 and CS:S. Suddenly today I can’t get the games to start.

When I logged on Steam the resent update of Deathmatch and SDK was automatically downloaded. After that HL2 and CS:S refused to start. The following happens after activating the shortcut to HL2:

1) The Steam window says: “Connecting Steam account: xxx” and after app. 2 sec. this windows closes.

2) A new Steam windows is activated saying: “Preparing to play Half Life 2” and after app. 2 sec. this windows closes.

3) The CD spins for app. 2 sec.

4) And then…nothing happens at all. I’m still at the windows desktop, no error message, nothing happens.

What the .... is going on??? Why can't Valve make anything to work. It really must be hard to work for Valve - you have to be able to make a lot of new errors all the time...

First off they are the first to do this kind of gaming platform deployment, which is a pretty ballsie undertaking considering the amount of people that use it and until now have been able to maintaing it.

Second this is the first time that developers are doing something like this. Servicing millions and millions of players to play online for free with content providing, coming right from their pockets.

So give em a break, can't they make a mistake once in awhile? No one said that the idea of Steam would be perfect, but i would say that it's pretty ****ing close.

So quit all your bickering people, VALVE and STEAM have offered so much to the community how could you all be so quick to jump the gun, when they have been loyal to us. Loyality is an understantment.
THats all i have to say to all you people complaining and cussing out valve just cause you babies can't play for a couple of hours.
 
Well I have some interesting developments:

While my Hl2 and CS:S still hang upon loading, the Deathmatch works fine, it auto-downloaded apparently b/c I never clicked on it or anything. While the sound was problematic and the gameplay was laggy It did work. I managed to kill someone with a chair. However I am still puzzled as to why my HL2 and CS:S don't work. Is it maybe a validation issue? because I have validated DM... anyway maybe someone can make sense of this BS

We paid for this game though, so we expect, no, demand a proper service or we should be entitled to our money back. Why should Steam users be forced to take the role of Valve's Q&A dept.
 
Omg yeah I pay the phone,cable,electric bill too. And shit so what sometimes those things go out as well. I don't complain about it because i know it will be fixed.

ok, we all understand that, and know that valve is awesome...however, dont bitch at everyone....they paid alot of money for the game, and expect it to work.....and unless your on the forums just to bitch at people, then your just as eager as everyone else for it to work, so chill....and bitch with everyone
