steam updated now HL2 won't start

OMG going to bed now hope this mix up will clear up.
hope valve doesn't tell us when they will have a fix for that cause then that will be delayed for another week or so!
 
Just tried steam://validate/320 which didn't work. I deleted half-life 2 deathmatch.gcf and installed the game again (this time it took 2 minutes!). It didn't help so I have no idea what this update has done :p
 
what in the nine hells? OOoo valve is gunna get whacked by bad karma I'm sure of it!

and yes.. I have the retail version...

Lets just say if they dont make it work soon thier gonna have alot more to worry about than karma catching up to them.... *growls*
 
At first I thought they might of forgot about the copy protection for retail owners :rolling: but it seems to be affecting steam purchasers too?. One thing which is strange, when I launched the SDK it said your Half Life 2 is not fully updated, but if I look at the properties to all my Valve games they all say 100%, go figure! :eek:
 
Well I have the steam bought version and the update utterly killed my abiliy to even start anything to do with source EXcept the sdk...it loads but I have not tried the actuall programs. Also my HL1 game and mods do start without a hitch.This update did not agree with something and I am in Texas and I have a P4 chip..so its not just amd's etc.
 
My crying baby has been asleep for 2 hours ... I was expecting to play HL2 offline to stop myself from cracking ... instead I spent the time searching some bloody hopeless Knowledge Base and messing with windows. At least I found you guys so I know I'm not going crazy!
 
I suspect that Steam's download got crushed and served corrupted images to **lots** of people. Some people probably managed to get thier update before the servers were crushed and they get to play :) -- I'm not one of them :(

I'm via steam... US.... not that that matters... I was just playing CS:S a minute ago, then i restart for updates, and it won't work.


Seroiusly, has NO ONE found a fix to this yet?
 
CS:S, HL2 and HL2DM are still updating for me.

AMD xp 2700+
gf4 mx440, 128mb
512mb ram, pc3200
xp pro, sp2
 
I have tried validating both HL2 and deathmatch but they still won't load, so god knows what the problem is. I just hope they fix it pronto.
 
I have the same damn problem. Just spent half an hour ringing everyone I know with HL2 tellingthem not to download the update of doom
 
Hmmm. Weird. I don't have this problem on my Steam-bought version (just updated in the last half hour). Just wanted to let you know that it's not the case with everyone, but...this is obviously very, very bad. Sorry for all of you having problems - hope it's addressed quickly. (As a sidenote, stuttering still isn't fixed for me.)

My specs (working) in case it'll help:
P4 2.6 GHz (400 FSB)
1 GB RDRAM
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
GeForce 6800 Ultra
 
Steam bought in australia here, same problem, i was satisfied with my steam service up until this point, way to go.
 
OK Same problem Im from Australia and It happend when I updated the Half Life 2 Death Match.

There is going to be a few hundred thousand pissed off people as soon as they all go to play the game. I hope Valve employees have good security.
 
Mine's the AsiaPac retail version, recently updated (about ten minutes ago). Oddly enough, only CS:S seems to be affected by this; both HL2 and HL2DM work fine (although the latter starts at a resolution/frequency beyond my monitor's capabilities, so I've yet to figure a way to play it).
 
All mine is busted.
That is:

Half Life 2
Counterstrike Source
Half Life Death Match

All except Codename Gorden that WORKS
 
Does anyone know of a way to re-download the patch, without reinstalling Hl2? In case we got corrupted files or something. Ugh this sure is a mess.
 
This is beyond a joke. And what is Valve's response? Yes, lets shut down the Steam forums further pissing off thousands of angry gamers who would like to know where their HL2 went.
 
Having the same Problem here in Chicago. I was playing yesterday just fine, until i did the update.

One thing to mention though. I usually check the Steam Monitor when i see the steam working icon in my taskbar. I noticed that all the source game where being updated at the same time, which could be the reason why none of the source engine games aren't working.

Hope this was some useful information.
 
I noticed that as well. In the monitor it said it was updating both HL2 and CS.
 
so they screwed up yet another patch. woot.

why would they have to modify cs:s for dm ? i can understand hl2, but why cs:s ...
 
Boy am I glad I'm not the only one with this problem....

I think some of you are overreacting though, they'll solve the problem soon enough...hopefully.

But, I do think it is BS that Valve probably knows about it and doesn't say anything about it. Atleast acknowledge it...I didn't pay $60 to have a program that works on and off.

Wow, I got so pissed of that I was about to reformat my computer because I thought my computer got messed up. I glad I did not reformat because I lost my xp disk anyways. :flame:

I played CS for a few hours went and made dinner, came back and stupid update. I checked it out and watched as it slowly set things up then I clicked on the "play when ready" cd spun up and all looked good then nothing. So 10mins later I reboot and get a new window thing. Preload YAY I just needed to reboot right? "WRONG" cd spins up after the 20min preload (new release I can live with that) cd spins down and nothing. another 20mins still nothing. I screem yell throw the mouse across the room.

GRRRR Uninstall this crappy software. ok ok one more try right?

Stick in cd1 to install.

2 hours later cd 5 is done. enter cdkey "SORRY YOUR CDKEY IS ALREADY REGISTERED ((SUCKER)). That's where I'm stuck. Can't click next can't go back. CDKEY is screwed.

there may have been some problem with STEAM not Valve software itself. People make mistakes people so calm down. Im sure they are calling up everyone out of bed at Valve/Steam right now to get this problem fixed.

Its just a game.

Don't register your same cd-key. All you have to do is put in your username and password into steam and you can play again. Well, at least until the so called "suprise-fix" is here...
 
Damn quit bitching people they will fix it, Im sure tons of people have already emailed them about it. Yea I got the same prob too *shrugs
 
I wonder if this the work of a hacker? Could be possible, worldwide virus spread, just think of the headlines. I bet the hacker is creaming in his pants now.

Won't let me finish the software install.
 
The thing is if you play, say, Far Cry you have the option of downloading a patch and can check it out to see if it works （patch 1.2 springs to mind） but with Steam it just seems to download automatically without you having any say. As others have said, it is ironically the pirates who have had the best experience with this game as they don'tneed Steam to play it, causing less problems.
 
Same problem here (RADEON 7500 with two monitors under Windows XP SP2)

I'm pissed off.
I want my money back.
