This was posted in a kinda off topic fashion so I had to start a new thread to reply.

That never happened to me, but something similiar happened to me once back when Counter-Strike was like beta5 or something.
One time I was playing a level from Counter-Strike in a LAN game early in the morning by myself. I was just looking at the architecture since I'm a mapper myself, when suddenly I hear this old voice saying, "This is not a radio, this is a computer!". At first I thought I triggered a wav in the map so I stoped right where I was, and starting observing my area to see if there was any buttons or something else I could have triggered it with.

I found nothing, and as hard as I tried by repeating my movements through the map I could not retrigger the voice, infact the voice was still going until I eventualy decided to escape Half-Life, and check cstrike folders sound directory for the voice I heard over and over again. I loaded the entire directory into winamp as a playlist and listened to every single one, but none of the wavs had that voice. I was going to check the entire Half-Life sounds, but instead decided to simply decompile the map with WinBSP.exe and check the entitie data explicitly. Oddly enough the map had no ambient_generic ents (Used for playing sounds in maps) anywhere in the map! Till this day I can't figure out what the hell that was.

Sorry but I forgot the name of the map, it was a subway terminal station of some sort with a glass ceiling room. The map was included with one of the CS beta's but quickly dropped in the following beta for some reason.

Anyone else have an odd experience while playing HL?
(Please only real ones, no bs or sarcasm)

Well it only happened once. I've heard that poltergiests usualy stick around with repitition. But I never experienced a poltergiest before so I don't even know if they really exist. All I know is that sometimes weird things happen, even if your minding your own business playing a game of CS.

of course, unexplainable stuff is part of life =P i think it was that dude who worked on cs and died jokeing around with you

(see aztec in spec mode)

Oh, I heard of that. I forgot which mapper it was tho. I wonder if that was his last map he made... Wow that might mean that an actual map by itself could be haunted! Makes me wonder about that map I made that included a secret room to a texture I made based off of a haunted painting I found posted on the internet.. Heh that map was always a good laugh! I had a secret room with a button that when i pressed it, it would teleport everyone into a black room with a huge image of a real life haunted painting with no exits and a blinking light with a loud voice of a girl screaming! Most people went, "Name: WTF?!?!?!?!!!!" and "Name: WHOLY SH*T AHHHH!!!" but once I let this 12 year old kid fall for it, and "name has left the game." appeared 2 seconds afterwards! Hahaha! He never joined my server again :\

wow, it seems too many people get "unexpected" sounds

maybe you're on to something here adam

the mapper name is Justin Dejong aka N0TH1NG ... he made cs_siege and cs_docks and other maps...he commited suicide in 2000... he was on meds for acne. I'm willing to bet he was on Accutane. I have no official word, but this acne medicine has been known to cause drastic side effects (more specifically depression). There have been several cases where suicides have been committed and many people report being depressed.

Ahh, I hate PennyArcade! None of their comics are funny! They are so boring! Most of the time the punchlines are cliched, don't make sense, have no point, or don't even contain a pun atleast!

My interpritation of Pennyarcade: "Hi, I'm Bob." "..." "..." "Cheese is good." END

*yawn*

Even those dynamic make your own comic websites have funnyer comic strips, and most of them are made by kids!

Tyl3n0L - He had attempted suicide several times before. In siege his map has the computer screen with the pills on it. The first time he tried with pills but it didn't work. I'm pretty sure the second time was pills again (the time that it worked).
He killed himself due to depression pretty much. As his name suggests... he thought he was nothing. That's my guess.
I remember seeing the forum post by his brother telling everyone what had happened... everyone was sad... these days people would say "LOL OWNED" or something... but that was that.

As for strange things in HL, i think my cd was really scratched one time cause i installed and when i play the scientists were saying all the wrong things at the wrong time, and the grenade launcher on the MP5 made an ENOURMOUS explosion, i'm talking the whole screen, yet it did no damage. The rest of it was bugged too but i didn't do too much more testing, just reinstalled.

Someguy could of hacked you, turned on his microphone and said that, trust me, I know :dozey:.

Was it over the internet ?, well someone could of been speaking to you through the Voice Comm :D

I don't think I could have been hacked, because the voice sounded like my own, only much older. Plus voice comm in HL makes everyone sounds like a kid talking thru a fan. And I have a powerful firewall up. Wait a minute... voice comm wasnt even out yet!

Have you considered that it could have simply been interference on your speakers? I used to live near a road where trucks passed by my house, and oftentimes their CB chatter would come out of my speakers due to my speaker wire picking up the sounds.

I have never had anything weird like that happen to me in HL. Sad to hear about that CS Mapper. :( Though I am 3 years late it seems.

If I was on meds for acne I'd be depressed too.

he could be right. on stormy days i always hear a russian radio thingy through my speakers, even though I actually live in austria... i was really scared the first time i heard it, i ran to my parents almost crying. well, that was about ten years ago.

but maybe your PCs is simply haunted. may be. I'd call an exorcist if i were you, he's the only one that can cure such things...

fark that shit, who cares if you have acne. i don't have much but one of my mates does, and it's fuggen gay that he gets last preference because of that. girls are more shallow than "male chauvanists" could ever be.

Guys won't go out with a girl who has a lot of acne.

God I hate when people talk about that acne medication. When it first came out there were news stories all over about how it makes people kill themselves, although medical studies were done and nobody got depressed simply due to the medication

I've heard voices from my speakers before... it wasn't during HL, my PC was just on doing nothing. I was reading or something and I heard voices. I went over to my PC and they were definately coming from the speakers. That was pretty scary. I couldn't tell what was being said, but I'm certain it was voices... I've only heard it the once tho

Every consumer electronic device out there has to accept all interference by law. That means that if someone else operates on the same frequency and is transmitting your device cannot block that and must accept the transmissions Oftentimes there will be radio transmissions on the same frequency that other electronics work on. Then you can hear radio out of computer speakers or guitar amps or anything else that has a speaker. It has happened to me countless times with my guitar amplifier.

Did you think maybe that it might have been something non-HL related? An open website, a virus etc..? Freaky though.

Thats pretty cool. I never had that happen to me but I can understand how it would freak alot of people out. It would be a good prank if you could get something you could talk into that works on the same frequency as someones speakers, I would have alot of fun with that. :cheese:

The first time i played through half life, a barney was with me but then he got killed. About ten minutes later i was in the same area and i heard barney say something like "catch me later, i'll buy you a beer"!!

Also, this may be a well known trick, but for those of you who dont know. If you cheat to get all weapons in the first level of half life, and kill a scientist or security guard, you can still have a conversation with their corpses. Their mouths and eyes still move and everything. It's really freaky.

You know that bit at the start where the scientists are in the lift falling down the shaft? when i played it through first time, i pressed 'use' (e) and then quickly paused it... whent something like this....
"GAAAAAAAA...<pause>..Hello Gordon....<unpause>...AAARRRGGGHHH"
funny as hell

In cs_vegas there is a secret to see the G-Man. I remember I was playing once and he just appeared, looked over, and disappeared. Apparently there is all this random stuff you have to trigger for it to happen, occasionally it happens by accident (the triggers involve standing in certain spots at certain points). If done rights he appears in the bedroom above the Sphinx.

The map was made by one of the Science and Industry development team members +Cadaver+ (the soda machines have the corporate logos of the S&I teams, the music on the radio is the same that plays when you place a radio in S&I, and there are some other minor things floating around). He also made flf_ascension, but I haven't found much except soda machines so far. In another one of his maps in S&I, si_virus, there is this secret involving breaking some stuff on tables and pressing on a plant and then opening a drawer that opens a secret passage that has a Six Million Dollar Man poster and the theme music for the show starts to play.

One time, after I had beaten HL, I decided to go back and play again. As soon as I started and the tram started moving, I was looking out and every NPC I passed just dropped dead as I came near. It was the strangest thing...scientists, the construction guys (I can't remember if the G-Man died though). I wanted to keep playing like that, but sure enough when the barney comes to open the tram for you, he dropped dead too and I was stuck in the car.

To this day, I have no clue why it happened, I wasn't using any cheats and I didn't do anything out of the ordinary.

Has anyone else seen anything like this???

Not really unexplainable, but play any map by Hondo in Action Half-Life and find the secret... they all have one, but ahl_5am and ahl_endlrain (and endlrain2) come to mind... MAN are those messed up :D

some guy in my town has a ham radio and my pc speakers get the part of the convo when he talks... sounds really bad though cant make it out..

When i first played half-life it was on my 300mhz amd k6... it had a nice 4mb voodoo1 card to play hl on, and so i began...
Remember a part in the tram when the female is talking through the speakers and you get to a point that some huge doors close behind you, you stand still for a moment and the doors in front of you open towards you? (i call them doors but they're some sort of locking mechanisms, the thing that shuts behind you consists of 2 metal things sliding towards eachother)
well anyways... the very first time i played it it went kinda laggy and sluggish and i don't know why but the doors that are supposed to shut behind you shut too soon and they went half-way through the tram and i got stuck.

(as it was my first time playing HL i tried for 30 minutes to get it fixed because i thought it was supposed to happen :D)

Actually, I've seen that happen too...as recently as a couple months ago....it can't be a slow computer either because, well, mine's not slow. So I'm no sure what caused it!

Ive had that problem where everyone died as you went by, It was wierd, so i tried one of my auto saves from later in the game but it didnt work on the aliens.

the weirdest thing ive had happen in hl was the cockroaches all started piling up on each other. They got to about waist high when i stepped on them

My mate had the same thing (with the dieing etc) it's well funny.

actually, I was playing CS just a few minutes ago with POD bots on Aztec after I read this thread to see if something odd would happen

well, surely enough...

I have WC3 mod installed and at one point the message "You have gained a level" came up when I wasn't even close to leveling up, and it had just happened last round, too

also, my messages to the bots like "you suck" came up in the console as duplicates every few times, which shouldn't happen

and the weirdest thing that someone else said happened in HL was when I got closer to one of the enemy bots by the start of the bridge closest to CT spawn he suddenly died (he didn't even fire at me), but it didn't show up in the top right that he did! unexpected death and it doesn't even say trigger_hurt or anything like that, very odd... and right after reading this thread!

edit:

this isn't unexplainable or have anything to do with HL, but a couple hours ago when I had a lot of thunder and lightning I heard tons of static (calm static, and not the annoying type, sorta deep bass) through the speakers, which, oddly enough for Florida, has not happened before with all the storms that we have every other day

double edit:

sometimes after midnight my Aiwa 200W stereo shuts off by itself without touching the remote; also, I once lost my remote control to my TV a little over 3 years ago, and suddenly showed up in my bed earlier this year

triple edit:

oh, this could be the best one I can think of; a person who owns GTA3 at Futuremark.com was playing it one day and made an explosion involving several cars; he took a screenshot of it 'cause of the impressive pyrotechnics and noticed later in it that in the middle of the shot you can see a demon in the flames formed by the fire and parts of the vehicles; I'll try to dig it up and upload

fs de_vegas is so buggy, ppl dissappear when they are running up the stairs at the back if you go from T spwan, down steps turn right downs steps turn left and then you are at another set of steps, they always dissapear there. buggy crap :¬/

as for the map you are talking about with the train station and the glass roof i believe the one you are thinking of is
cs_station

used to have a lot of fun on that map....... cs_docks is still my all time favourite for any map though..... oh and cs_facility owns... cept crap nowdays because the T fags always just camp by the hossies and own you through the only door of entrance..... i want someone to take that map then add a vent and a larger access place and split the hossies up a bit to make it fairer and then we can all have the joy of it again. Wouldn;t keep to the Bond design it was based on but never mind :D

Kam

I've been playing some various game online before and weird ass trance music started playing, i also thought it was ambient sound but nobody else on server herd ne'thing, and their was no cd in my drive either to make it play music...

counterstrike's not my favourite online game... maybe in a few months when CS based on the HL2 enige comes out.... it might be ;) btw CS: CZ will suck i'm afraid :( based on HL1 technology and only retail versions getting high-polygon models.... damn that sucks.

anyone here ever play Black & White? If you had a legit version, the game would scan your registry and look up your first name and reference it against a wav file it had with about 500 names recorded ina whisper. When you played B&W, at random times it would whisper your name like *Johhhhhn* It was really creepy. Right after the game was released, there were several people posting to boards saying "WTF? Is my computer talking to me" And no one believed them, thinking they were having auditory hallucinations until the wav file was found. I bet the devs laghed there asses off.
