Street Fighter 4!

falling sky needs a command change...

NAO!

ex falling sky is my biggest enemy when going for quick-executed ultras. make it qcb+p or something.

If it was qcb+P then tornado throw would have to be changed.

Man, playing this game on Xbox Live from Australia is absolutely shit. The best games I can find have the second lowest possible connection rating (one red bar) with most not even showing the bar. Even then when i try playing any of those games its like playing with lead balls attached to your character as every move takes longer to perform and in order to play the game well you need clairvoyancy.

I got no complaints getting my assed wupped by my brother when playing next to him, but losing to some ****head spamming Tiger Punch over and over and over again when the game wont let me pull off any of those "passing through" type moves because of the difference in lag, its ridiculous.

lol i know exactly how you feel
although the fierce elbow launch+ex falling sky still does a considerable amount of damage, so it's not all bad

so, after days and hours of failing over and over and over, i finally completed abel's 5th trial.

i wanted to scream, but all i could do was stare.

i was that satisfied with myself. my thumb is sore, my wrist is throbbing, my eyes are burning, **** that, those abel icons are finally mine. if abel's challenges were any indication of the difficulty, i am never doing anyone else's challenges from now on.

I really wish some of you would record your games so I can watch and hopefully learn how to play this better. I played Arcade on Easy, and it took me at least 10 tries on the final boss.

if you wanna get better at this game, don't play the cpu. it's cheap, falls for the same moves over and over, and develops bad habits. jump online, accept the fact that you'd probably lose a shit-ton and learn from the losses.

so i finally broke the 1000bp milestone as abel (repping my new abel cartoon block head icon woop woop), but it was pretty bumpy.

i agree
forget about play the cpu
player vs player is the best way to learn

Well, I got utterly slaughtered against Darkside....but we think we may have found me a character I can be good at :E

Sagat is so extremely overpowered it breaks the game. He has the fastest fireball and can pull off a shoryuken as soon as he lands on the ground just like all the shotos characters, except his damage is about twice as much as any of those. Its absolutely ridiculous, and gamebreakingly terrible.

This comes from me having won 10 straight games of 3 round matches as Sagat against my brother. Its ridiculous.

How are the challenges going? Also, try and play as many online matches as you can. Don't know if I mentioned that to you, but it's the best form of practice after solo practice/challenge mode.

Sagat, for all intents and purposes, is a shoto. He is shoto-like.

Which means against Abel he is completely ineffective. Tiger uppercut? Blocked; tornado throw on the way down. Fast fireball? They see me rollin', they hatin'. Low tiger shot gets wheel kicked. Also, Thanks for sticking your arms waaaay out there during tiger shot--it gives my ultra even more of a hitbox to punish.

Game breaking? Naw.

abel vs sagat is a tough match if the sagat knows your options and how to counter them. you have to be patient. i like to do rolls and threaten attacks to bait him into a move so i can counter appropriately.

but with his high health, high damage output, long reach, good zoning ability, and ultra that he can combo into for stupid damage, i'd say he could get knocked a couple notches down. his walk speed doesnt really count as a downside, tiger knee solves it.

Aye. Careless shotos are easy to punish as Abel. The ones that knows what they're doing, though, are a completely different ball game. They'll cancel out of dragon punches and never throw fireballs unless mid combo. You're in the shit then.

So far so good. For some reason, every time I successfully pull off an ultra in my head, I just do a special move. Drives me batshit insane. I really gotta get my fingers used to this stuff.

It's a lot more difficult on a controller, I'll say that.

Also with Sagat, I find the only thing that's scary about him vs. Abel is fierce kick. Fierce kick can lock you out; it's better than any fireball, tiger knee, or threat of tiger uppercut when you're trying to close in on him. Watch out for fierce kick.

Yeah that fierce kick is pretty beasty.

Also, El Fuerte is far more awesome than people give him credit for. His EX Messiah Kick or what its called is the best anti-air defense in the game. He is the anti-Zangief.

Messiah Kick is Rufus. You're thinking of GUACAMOLE!

And El Fuerte can be so damned deadly in the right hands. Tostada Press is abusive. Like, ridiculous abusive. You can't do much to get out of it.

interesting, i hope they still have plans to add a 4-player lobby system though.

Yeah, that's what I was expecting to happen in this update. Blah. Well, tournaments should be fun with your GP on the line.

Last, but most certainly not least, disconnecters, aka pullers, aka ragequitters, your days are numbered: If you disconnect during a match, the system will also dock you your progress in the tournament, so pullers will never be able to advance into the higher ranks of tournaments. What’s even more fun is that the system also happily displays your disconnect percentage, so if you've got a bad habit, it's right there for everyone to see.

awesome that they included this. I can't tell you how ****ing lame it was in Capcom Vs SNK 2 when people quit or pulled the Ethernet cable when they lost or were getting a beat down.

They should have really done it where if you disconnect a certain number of times you start losing BP. If you keep on doing it, you're completely barred from online play. I think that's fair.

Dear god the tournament update made the online play way worse. Now the only thing that remain are thoso spam homos. I join a game, ah it's a sagat with 1200gp, well he should be good I guess. Match starts, tiget knee, tiger knee, tiger knee, tiger knee, tiger knee... Sigh... I want an arcade hall :D

At least in person you can give him a dirty look or maybe crowd his space on the machine ...

i havent really played much of the new tourney yet, only won 2 matches and now im in a g3 final battle which i havent gotten around to playing. do you lose points for losing in the tourney mode?

also, watching replays is effing sweet. i picked up a lot of tricks from them :P

i'm really starting to dig rufus now. finished all his trials within half an hour too which surprised the hell out of me.

Made a complete switch from abel to gouken. Even the dummest retards now know to stay away from abel. Anyone got any tips against turtles? I really haven't had to play that much against turtles but now after the tournament patch the game is full of 'em. Atleast with the tournament patch when I got to G2 the field got a lot better.

Gouken is underrated. Super powerful. But you gotta be fast with your moves to make him work for you. But I don't know why you're asking about turtlers with Gouken because he's the master of the squat. Use every variation of his fireball (including the two-hit charge and fierce/EX if they jump) and use your fierce palm to go through their fireballs. Just make sure you're not the entire screen away.

By turtles I mean Blanka, Guile etc. With blanka I can't jump on him cause he will just electro cute my ass. Fireballs don't work because the lhp has insane range, and blankas will rarely jump. But yea gouken is a beast. Love doing jump, mk, hp, then to that ex-palm, ex-fireball and then ultra (or without fireball to ultra). And it's piss easy to pulloff. Mostly I'm just having trouble on whether I should stay away or go close. And getting close seems hard, especially against turtles. They'll just crouch wait for jump and punish. Well atleast sagat is pretty piss easy to beat with gouken now :/

This thread is way too long to read, but I just started playing SF4, do we have any resident Street Fighter gurus?

Perhaps he has some Abel tips?

you better stop thinking of that grab as cheap if you wanna get anywhere with abel.

Maybe something that doesn't involve that cheap as hell grab?
I'm going to give you the greatest lesson in fighting games you'll ever hear, so take this to heart:

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 'CHEAP.'

Think about the nature of a fighting game. What is the goal of a fighting game? The goal is to win. The person who defeats the other person is the winner; they have completed the 'goal' of the game.

Think about the rules of a fighting game. Every fighting game has a set system of rules that define what you 'can' and 'cannot' do in the game. Therefore so long as you are not (or can not) make changes to the code of the game itself, then everything WITHIN the game becomes 'legal' in order to achieve your 'goal.'

Many people will offset their game by creating rules external to the game that compromise their chances of victory. "I don't want to be cheap," "using that move is unfair;" these are thoughts that will compromise your ability to achieve your goal! Gamers will often build up these false rules under the excuse of 'honor' and 'fair play,' even though they themselves are the ones who dictate what is supposedly honorable and what is not! Does the game penalize you for using a 'cheap' move? Is it 'illegal' for such a thing to be used? Has Capcom issued a statement banning a move or tactic, or released a patch correcting the issue?

No.

The thought of 'cheap' is a limiter that blocks any gamer from achieving their full potential, especially in a fighting game. How many times have I seen people say, "I don't want to spam a fireball?" when using fireballs to zone out your enemy and keep them within (or without) the range of your normals and specials would net them a victory? How many times have I seen someone say, "I don't parry because it wasn't in the original game and it breaks the nature of Street Fighter?" Only the scrub said that, and that is why 3S became a hardcore-players-only fighter. And how often have I heard, "Throwing is cheap. All you can do is throw." These are excuses built up by people who do not want to win, and often who they themselves cannot--through lack of skill or willful desire to retain a 'code of honor'--utilize such tactics.

Listen well! Abel is a character WHOSE SOLE PURPOSE IS TO GET RIGHT THE FUCK UP ON YOU AND THROW THAT ASS AROUND. HIS ENTIRE GAME IS THROWING. To say, "I do not want to use that cheap as hell grab" then you play Abel then you should not even BE playing Abel. You should not even technically be playing Street Fighter, because if you go around saying, "I don't want to be unjust in playing" you are inviting stronger players like myself to roll up on you, wait a tick, grab you, spin you around my head and slam you into the ground. And while this is by no means the end-all-be-all to Abel's game (far, far from it--he's actually a combo character at heart, believe it or not), it's a HUGE part of said game. Huge. At any moment you're going to need to throw by muscle memory alone. Your fingers are going to have to always be ready to hit LP+LK without your brain acknowledging the movement. Your left hand will constantly have to be buffering a half-circle back every time you roll, every time you jump, at the end of every f.MK, f dash, at every crossover and wake up, at any time you suspect the opponent is about to throw, at every whiff the opponent makes, at every moment there is no chance of recovery you need to be ready to throw out that "cheap as hell grab."

Abel's hands grasp victory with throws.

And there is no such thing as 'cheap.' Put that out of your head or become one of those players who cries that they cannot win matches, and that their opponent did some 'cheap shit' that they couldn't counter.

That is the path to victory.

epic post.

abel's fun. he's still one of my favorite character to use. but it gets really hard to earn wins once you start getting to that point where you play people that know how to play against abel. it becomes one huge guessing game where you're trying to cause reactions in the other players so you can punish and doing mixups while praying that you dont eat reversals. you work so hard to get in close but all it takes is one mashed out tiger knee or shoryuken and you're back to square one. it's usually not too hard to land those cause abel's moves are pretty slow and very punishable. not to mention the blanka matchup is a ****ING BITCH

I'm finding I'm best with Ryu because of his medium punch and his Super and Ultra fireballs combo's. If i'm lucky enough I can get in a 6 hit combo of 4 medium punches, a hadouken, shoryuken then cancelled for his super. When that happens its ****ing devastating. I won twenty consecutive rounds using medium punch and kick combos one night.
