Street Fighter 4!

I only called it cheap because that's how the computer uses all of the special throws. The computer is just too fast and too accurate with the stick movements for my skill level.

Don't get me wrong, I grab, a lot. I just don't use the tornado throw at the moment because I'm not good enough with the stick movements to be able to pull it off effectively.

So basically, I should just keep rolling up to the opponent, do some manner of a grab, and repeat? Should I vary that up a little bit maybe? Are there any good combos that I should know of?

Me and Darkside played a few games. I think I won, what, 1 game out of 15?

It made me realize how horrible I am at these games. I'm one of those crybabies that complains because I can't be a human opponent. I think in Soul Calibur IV, I was 1 and 50.....:(

I will finally have my own copy tonight. Who wants to destroy me on XBL tonight? Add Qonfucius!

I could beat any of you most of the time. I've been playing since Street Fighter [1]. I'll have to back this up some other day though, because I can't afford consoles and subscriptions.

I hope the PC version is really coming out. Anyone know anything about it?

It's announced for Q4, iirc.

I remember playing SSF2 as a kid, but I never really picked it up again until 4 came out.

^Sweet, I hope it's not a victim of rampant cheating. I'll be so pissed.

You guys are going to have a good head start, I haven't even played SF4 yet. I'm better at certain versions of this game. When I was a kid, I used to practice everyday. I thought I was going to be in tournaments one day (well, I kinda was - online on Xbox [1]).

Tournaments are were it's at. I can't wait.

If someone wants to hit me and ply my gamertag is Rico21745

I play a mean Ryu, so I'm told.

my gt is in my sig if anyone is interested. west coast. trying to learn rufus right now so i'm prepared for an ass kicking

i have a feeling the pc version will be plagued by macro users and the like D:

^
people used to often accuse me of cheating on Capcom vs. SNK because I beat their ****ing ass so bad.

Truth was, I just had a good arcade stick and I could do the 'hundred hand slap' and Blanka's electrocution with the fierce button - because I was raised in the arcades bitch. I got ninja rapid fire fingers. Anyway, I used all of their moves to strategically own the entire screen, with attacks from all directions. It's not like all I did was smash teh buttons. I'm just fierce as hell with Blanka. he's a beast.

the blanka matchup is a ****ING BITCH
Indeed. :(

It honestly depends. The roll and throw is a staple; it's probably the first thing you should learn to do with Abel because it gets you in the habit of rolling and throwing. You want to be able to execute rolls and tornado throws quick, even independent of each other. (You will not always want to throw immediately after a roll, or roll before a throw)

Your bread and butter move--that is, what you're going to use the most--is Abel's Change of Direction, his combo attack. The more advanced you get with Abel the more you'll start to use this move as the ending to a combo or to FADC (focus attack dash cancel) out the first hit of CoD into a more devastating combo. As far as "good combos" goes, the BnB ones are:

Jump in MK, FP, CoD
Jump in MK, crouching MP, CoD
Crouching MP or MK, CoD
Forward + MK, forward again to dash, first hit of FP cancel into CoD

Those are likely going to be the only combos you end up using in the game. When you become a high-level Abel and you fight against another high-level Abel, the game becomes "Who did crossup MK, c.MP, CoD first?" That player will be the winner because Abel has little defense against himself. Abel has extremely limited defense against aerial attacks to begin with.

I recommend doing the challenge mode, then go into practice mode and set the CPU to block after the first hit, and practice combos. If the computer blocks after any hit in the combo you need to work on your timing. Once you can do it in practice go fight a lot of online bouts and learn how to use it there, because it WILL be different. Not necessarily the timing, but actually being able to pull off the combos against an opponent who's doing everything in their power to beat you down.

I'll repeat a tip I've said previously in this thread, and a few other Abel guys (we have a lot of them on HL2.net it seems; makes me happy) have said: f.MK controls the battlefield. If you need an immediate combo opener and your air game is blocked (that is, you can't jump in for fear of getting anti-air'd) use f.MK, f and dash right up on them. From there you can start a combo with FP if you time it right, or you can pressure them into blocking your f.MK, dash up to them, tornado throw.

That's why throw is so important to learn. You start pressuring with Abel's combos, and your opponent's thinking, "Shit, shit, gotta block or he's going to take a huge chunk out of my health," and they'll crouch and block low out of fear and you just walk right up on 'em and tornado throw.

Keep training. :) I'm sure your Viper will be awesome.

Fuck year, son, Ryu wit dem red shoes and red hair

I wish you had SF4 for PS3. The competition is so much better than on XBL, and I really want to fight you. We'd have a gentleman's fight.

heh. Just get it for the PC later. Would be sweet if there were new features or something, but I doubt it.

I'd like to fight, but you'd crush me though, I haven't played it.

They never really made the version that I really wanted them to, if that makes sense.

But what were you saying? What's up with Blanka in SF4? Is SF4 unbalanced?

I don't have a PC that could play SFIV. :(

And Blanka isn't unbalanced, it's just that he's the rock to Abel's scissors. Blanka is arguably Abel's hardest matchup. (It's between Blanka and Zangief) There are things Abel can do against Blanka; Abel can stuff some of Blanka's moves and punish him really bad, but a good Blanka who's all over the screen is going to mess up Abel horribly. Hop tricks, slide, ball, chip from ultra, electricity...Blanka was made to stop Abel.

yea, blankas are a bitch cause he's really hard to get into range against, and once you're in, most of blanka's moves beat out abel's anyway. you're gonna spend most of the round trying to look for the openings and baiting mistakes. **** that.

Any news/specific date for a PC release? I've never played Street Fighter before (at all), and have realized my mistake. I figure that playing the hell out of SF4 on PC would atone for my lack of this awesome game.

*more stuff

Thanks for the theory tips. I managed to finish all of the easy trial challenges, I'm still working on the hard ones though. My xbox tag is Higlac89. Somebody needs to send me a message so I can compare myself to other Hl2.netters.

Is anyone brave enough to compile all of the gamertags/PSN ids in a single post in this thread? Kinda tough to find everyone without digging through 9 pages of SF4 info :-P
