Stuff I only noticed the 2nd time around

I'm pretty sure it's a double-seater. I believe the concept art in RtB shows as much. But then, trying to rationalise a helicopter that carries thousands of times its own mass in bombs is probably futile anyway.

Yeah, I know it has two pilots as I said it still shoots and flies after you (is it flies or flys? Whichever) One pilot, one gunner... but it still does both when one is lost. I'm not even going to begin trying to understand the weapons system, but a two-person cockpit that seems to be controllable through one person is something I can go into.

It can't be too hard to fly and shoot in the way that the helicopter defaults to once it's in the reservoir. An onboard computer could probably do that.

I would of thought it was two-person designated for a reason (ala, gunner and pilot), otherwise it deems the other a little pointless if it can do it's task exactly the same whilst missing a body.

But then, I don't really know much about the technical specs of gunships of today like the Apache and how they work if one of the crew was to not function because... well, for some, not a little boat shooting at it, though.

Anybody notice that in the playground at the beginning, there's a tic tac toe board with one piece missing. A few minutes later when you're in the apartments, the first room you come too HAS that missing piece sitting on a table. Probably useless, and may have been posted before... but I just noticed this and thought it was cool.

On my fifth run through the game, I swear I heard Alyx humming a bit whilst trying to fix that teleport at Black Mesa East.

She certainly does that in the Cinematic mod, not sure about regular.

One of the reasons I love HL2 is for all the little details here and there. Every time I've played, I've found new stuff. One of my favorite things to do is paint zombies and combine. :p

Also, the part where you first start seeing the headcrab shells, there's an electrified train car you have to walk through. I giggled with delight as the shell landed in front of me, headcrabs started crawling out, then one by one, they jumped, then flew backwards dead from electrocution.

I also love the part where you get the gravity gun, and up on the ledge where you pull the barrels down is the front of an oldschool HEV charger.

Ooh! Ooh! And the "Beware of Dog" sign! I noticed that one prolly my fifth time playing.

And the head of that thing (can't remember the name) in Eli's lab in the jar! I love what he says about it. "We're still not sure what that does. Alyx brings in the strangest things."

Also, I saw someone mention a few pages back about characters being in a seperate room off the map when talking on a screen. Well, Alyx *is* there right before you get the buggy! I'm pretty sure on the screen it's just a texture, but if you noclip right below there and go down a little bit, she's there in a room, talking. It's funny, 'cause she can see you and if you bump into her, she'll move around. :D

The only problem with that is that in order to check it we'll have to fight our way through Ravenholm first... I've heard that it was a texture based video, not a real one, but I'll check it out next time I'm going past the outpost.

Did you know you can also see ravenholm from the dam on water hazard? If you look down to BME there is a burnt out town above it.

Ah! I just happened to have a save file near the end of Ravenholm, so I pulled it up right quick. :)

It's interesting because when you go into the little room, Leon's voice becomes muffled and sounds kinda far away. Meanwhile, you see Alyx talking normally, but her voice still sounds like it's coming over a radio. :p

Ooo, nice screens. That audio bit sounds really interesting, I'm going to have to try that when I'm around there again.

Wow, good job stealing this thread from the clutches of paleantologists.

While we're back on this topic, I thought I'd mention the scene with the three Metrocops getting smoked by the train in "Route Canal." I only noticed it on my second play through, though that could just be because I'm a bit thick.

And (haha) another thing: until about my fourth play through I'd never noticed that Gordon's jump off of the BME dam ends with him falling about 100m downward. I'd always just assumed he landed in a location at roughly the same elevation as the place from which he jumped.

this thread really wins.

however, the one thing that I really loved about half life 2, was this specific scene in the anticitizen lvl in city 17. there was this one scene where i was alone with another citizen and I went into this dark old corridor. i saw a doll on the ground in the elevator and this eerie music started playing(like a distant radio mixed with other sounds) it really made me feel scared because a while later, i was fighting zombies in the old apartments. awesome

And the TV is unplugged too. :eek:Gman is creepy...
I've never really noticed any of those things too.:E

And about the citadel (which was discussed quite a few pages ago). You can get a rough idea of how high it is when you are captured in the citadel and taken to Breen in the pod.
As the pod races to the top, at some point in the ride, there is an opening in front of you.
You can see C17 in it's scorched and devastated state(actually you just see the lights). And it's a REALLY long way down.

Ps:The doll on the playground in "Point Insertion" is another creepy thing. You can faintly hear children laughing when you go on the playground.

it is very distinct. if you go near the playground you hear it. i kind of wish i could explore city 17 a bit more before the fighting actually started and I got discovered. such as, well looking throug ration shops, seeing how the people behave ect.

OH, And did anybody notice that you see bullet bubbles fly past you underwater when you are being, wel..shot underwater?

I still see new assets even on the 99999th playthrough :hmph:

For example, the dropship in EP1 citadel is actually crashing right on a strider at the end of the sequence, and there are soldier beds on some far-away walls.

O inly just realised that after the lighthouse part of hl2, you see a dropship taking your car away :(

Hidden ammo caches are always fun to find. That bit on Xen, just before you meet the Garg, with an overhang that's hard to spot, for instance.

The dropship is carrying a strider. When it crashes the strider crashes with it.

Actually, the strider it was carrying falls out of it's grasp as the wall explodes next to it, the drop ship sputters about, obviously knocked senseless, and the crashes into the 2 striders that were walking the other way. NOCLIP! :D

*sigh* I've played the game like 12 times and I have yet to hear the children laughing. :(

walk over in front of the swing set, and look at the baby doll, and just stand there. Listen closely and you can hear Gordon remembering the sounds of children playing. It's a pretty touching moment in the game.

Also, it has to be on Point Insertion, not on Anti Citizen 1.

I just listened in closely to that lady that talks in nova prospekt, in sand traps when you come out of that hallway where you have to fight a few manhacks, and soldiers, the lady says "Subject Anti Citizen One Now entering border of Nova Prospekt. Attention Overwatch, Mission Failure will result in permanent off world assignment." Or something like that.

Ah ha. Thank you for the clarification. I stand corrected.

Yeah, that music that plays on the TV during G-Man's cameo is super-creepy. Kudos to Mr. Bailey for some inspired recording/sound-editing.

Also, I was pleased to see that piece being used in the intro to this vid: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=gojnF7RatZk

I'm pretty sure the scene is a reference to horror movie "The Birds" which is directed by Alfred Hitchcock. We all know Laidlaw is a fan of his work.

Could be. It would seem there's more than a chance connection bewteen the G-Man and crows, as they often show up near G-Man sightings (outside the resistance train car, near the observation platform of the dam, on his shoulderin AC1, etc.). Though given the sheer number of crows in the game, I guess it could just be a coincidence...

Listen closely and you can hear Gordon remembering the sounds of children playing.

I doubt he REMEMBERS them. It's more of a creepy little extra if you bother finding it.

And he can't also remember them because he was put into stasis on xen for 20 years.
and city 17 was made (or renamed) AFTER the combine invasion, which he never knew of.
And obviously he had never been to the city, or any other city in this case, since he had to live in Black Mesa. Even though some personell there had children living in the dormitories, i doubt there was a playground Gordon could've visited during his life in Black Mesa.

So my opinion is that those sounds were an extra. Also bear in mind that Valve has always been good at making things feel creepy and downright epic.

Ps:You hear them getting killed? I thought i heard laughter...;(

How can it have been 20 years? Gordon's 27. It would have meant he was working in Black Mesa when he was just seven years old! And that cannot be possible.

Gordon did not aged during the statis (which is almost two decades).

Hmmm... Well did Gordon spend his whole life in BM? I would have thought that somewhere in his childhood his parents MIGHT have taken him to a public park to play in the playground, but that's just me. :/

It is creepy, but I think somewhere between the giant 3 legged monsters roaming the streets, or civilians obviously being oppressed, and beaten to death, Gordon might have figured out that he was in a different time. Also with the towering citadel in the background. That's not at all alien...

Something I noticed in HL1 a while back, after I palyed hl2, and went back to hl1 to play, I noticed that in "Forget about freeman" where the soldier tells everyone that they're pulling out, and to forget about freeman, after he goes off the line you can hear something that sounds like a combine soldier's far away garbling. :|

i know it can't be a Combine Soldier, but maybe it was something else? I dunno. just thought I'd share that.

Where is the children voice thing? Is it in the first time we come to the playground or the second time?

First, just after you pass the 2 guys talking ('well, they have no reason to come to our place'). Impossible to miss if you're wearing headphones.

This is why we don't feel too bad lusting after Alyx, 'cause otherwise he'd be waaayyy too old and creepy. :p

Meh. Some girls like older guys.

The reason I would feel guilty lusting after Alyx is that she's uh...a video game babe, and not a real woman.
