Swedish defense is shutting down.

So, I feared this day.
Every country needs a defence, and if they don't have one it only becomes harder trying to remain a neutral position in any ongoing wars since you can't do anything about it.

If you live here, you should be aware of that the goverment have been shutting down parts of the defence over the years.
A couple of days ago, they allowed the militaryplans for the next decade to be put in action, with the effect that almost every base will be shut down.

We have made alot of good things, and have good defense with such things as our modified Leopard 2 tank, BAMSE anti-air system and the JAS Gripen.

When we spent millions of dollars on development on one of the currently best planes in the world, it's going away.

In a couple of years (think 4-5) Sweden will have 120 tanks left, with 84 Gripen to defend 32200 kilometers of coast, some ranging against Russia. I've tryed to find out what will happen to the navy, but didn't found any information of it.

The northern parts of the country will be forgotten, I think. This is bad, since a special thing about the Swedish army is the sub-artic training.

Well, it was fun to know you World but now:
GG nextmap.

sweden has about as much of a chance of being invaded as Canada does: nil! unless that is there be oil under all that snow :)

what was that famous quote again? :

"Wouldn't it be great if schools had all the money it needed and the military had to hold a bake sale to buy a tank?"

I'm not really in favor for war or anything, but this is frightening. I can smell those darn russians planning to attack any day now.

I hope you're kidding...

Well, we don't really need our military any more, do we? Nobody in their right mind is going to try to invade.

Well, the world thinks "Everything that can be invaded, will be invaded" rather than "Anything that is worth invading, will be invaded."

EDIT: Oh, and sorry for the doublepost.

Well, they can't invade us. Union member, neutral country, etc. And imagine the politcal uproar if it was to happen!

Don't worry USA will save you guys, by dropping a Nuke :D

Most MEDCs do not need an army anymore the only wars that they have been involved with recently is Iraq and afganistan which are on foreign soils. There is no chance of invasion, America im sure would come to aid at least.

As long as they drop it in the right place, i don't think anyone would mind .

You know how USA saves country that need help, by bombing the shit out of it :)

I think it's a great thing. Finnaly we have countries that don't have to worry about war anymore.

But since there right now is a counterpart, what will happen if someone tryed to invade us?

It takes ages to build up a defense.

That's the whole point, when the geopolitical situation starts getting nasty, maybe then they'll try and set defences back up.

Portugal started this as soon as they joined NATO, I'm glad others are following in.

Well, as I've said nobody would even dream of invading us. It simply isn't plausible nowadays.
Invading poor countries in the less fortunete parts of the world =
Yes.
Invading a rich country in the middle of Europe =
No.

I think you missed my point there.
You can dismantle a whole countrys defense in 5 years.
But rebuild the same thing from scratch, it will take atleast 15 years.

Think of it like this.
A new Hitler takes the place.
Sovjet came around again.

Anything could happen quickly with this days weapons.
A WW3 will change everything.

A new Hitler? C'est impossible. The people of today are too well-informed to let something like that happen. Wars don't exist in Europe any more.

You never know what the world will look like in 5 years. It only took Hitler 6 years from winning the election to setting the whole world on fire.

I don't mind seeing a few divisions closed, as long as it is motivated. But the way it's looking now you might think they just strapped a blind fold on to someone and let that person point on the map which divisions will be shut down.

I mean, take for example Amf4 (Amphibious 4) in Gothenburg. Not only does it have a strategic emplacement at the inlet of the Gothenburg harbour, the largest and most important harbour in the whole Nordic region, but it's also the only unit present on the west coast!

And look at Östersund. They're shutting down everything there, leaving thousands of people unemployed. In a town with ~50 000 inhabitants, 2000 people all of a sudden going unemployed will have a big effect.

This whole thing is also a testament to the governments obvious inability to carry out long-term planning. I mean, only a few years ago the government decided to buy in lots of these new Tanks, the 121's, at a cost of hundreds of millions. Now, they're shutting down all the units using the 121's, rendering the tanks useless.

But of course, those things are all material. I truly, truly hope they manage not to scrap all the experience and knowledge that is currently held in the Defensive Powers.

You need only look at the Balkans and Russia to see that there is still fighting taking place.

Alot of stuff.

Exactly my point, we need an army!
The same thing is happening in Boden, signalbataljonen, luftvärnet and alot of other bases.

where have your government decided to redirect the money to? most probably, your quality of life will improve as a result. cutting defense will free up large amounts of money that can be spent in other sectors.

I sense that the government have a serious plan behind all this *sees conspiracies in every street corner*... If we are attacked now, we would practically be in the same situation as Poland before WWII damnit...

Too bad my dad is in the military (he's in charge of money transferers for his base. He sucks @ math I can tell you :D). I predict he will soon lose his job as well (well this is his 3rd position in the last 10 years in the military).

Moral of the story: Do NOT apply for a job in the Swedish military :E

Edit: On second thought, Iceland, Denmark, Norway & Finland doesn't have much of a defence either AFAIK. And they are more easily defendable than Sweden. I think.

We still have the second highest quality of life in the whole world so, I don't know what it is going to be used to.

Just don't overdo it :E Our paper airplanes might get punctured (sp?).

There is 0.1% chance anyone will invade Sweden in the nest 10 years.

I'm glad we're finnaly taking that chance instead of focusing so much on the fear of war.

Portugal has 1 squad of 25 F-15s, an army of a few thousands and 2 major military bases in their territory, one of them lended to the USA (it's in an island...we wouldn't give up sovereignty)

Maybe a 'lil tax reduction for us then?

Not likely :(

Actually IIRC the new budget plan was gonna reduce the income tax but increase the fuel tax.

Yeah, but you´ll be okay, because if the russians attack, theyll have to go trough Finland. And we all know this is impossible :borg: :E
