Swedish defense is shutting down.

Sweden has nothing to worry about, or if they do, then less than Finland. Our equipment is restrictred in some ways and the budget isn't that big neither. And Russia as a neighbour...

It's not that they'd get through here, though. We've got sisu(having balls/guts but about 10x that) and our Pasi apc's :P
 
Yeah, but you´ll be okay, because if the russians attack, theyll have to go trough Finland. And we all know this is impossible

Yeah the polar bears will get them :P. And dont worry the russians are so poorly equiped they are armed with shovels.

There will be no wars in europe for a long long time, the whole of europe is united and has links to the US if anyone is invaded they just call out to about 15 other countries and the invaders get crushed.
 
Most modern militaries aren't at all used for defence against a possible invasion. They are used incase of disaster inside the country both natural and otherwise, for humanitarian work, for peace keeping, etc.

Everyone knows that there is little chance of Sweden being invaded any time soon (although alot can change in 10 years) but the purposes of most modern militaries are what I listed above.
 
Seriously, why would we ever need an army? So we can fling some more of our soldiers to their deaths before we get overrun?

I say, dismantle our army all together, and create special task forces for national security and in case of emergencies etc etc. You know, like an army but without the fighter jets and stuff.

Well how can you do peace keeping missions then? Unless someone else is going to do it then you are going to need an actual military to conduct peace keeping missions.

Sweden hasn't done anything of the sort for years I suspect if ever (Although correct me if I am wrong) so I suppose they have an excuse. Britain on the other hand actively conducts peace keeping missions so they do need an actual military.

You mean like "nationella insatsgruppen", but that is policecontrolled.
But then we have SSG, but they're only a few men.

I'm sure SÄPO could use mindcontrol to save us though.

Are you kidding?
Sweden have played a huge part in peace keeping and aiding.
With both protecting using eliteforces such as SSG or air-dropping supplies using a Hercules.

When was the last time this happened? I believe you its just that I have never heard of Sweden doing anything when it comes to peace keeping.
 
We've done our fair share. The Balkans come to mind, I'm sure there is something more recent too.

Last I've heard from the SSG was a kongomission with 30 killed.
I'll check this fact upp with the military sites.

EDIT:
According to the website (http://www.mil.se/int/) Sweden currently have peacekeeping missions in alot of countries, including Kosovo and Afganisthan (Yay for the States!)

In that case Sweden doesn't really have much of an excuse for slowly eliminating its military because it has been of use in the past and still is of use now, it has taken part in peace keeping missions and it could still serve a very good purpose if it is kept alive and well.

Do you really want only a very small select few countries to hold all the military power and do all the future peace keeping work?
 
I idlise Sweden, if the whole world had the Swedish attitude, there wouldnt be any need for army's or guns.

:( then you see the harsh reality of it all , looking over at the US, and other countries like North Korea :( , and Saudi arabian countries.

You don't really get to know alot about something unless you look abit further into it. :)

And yes, it's very weird that they choose to unequip the forces now, probably alot of economical reasons behind it.
