Teacher tells muslim student: "I bet you're grieving Uncle Osama"

A ninth grade algebra teacher was suspended from a Texas school district after making offensive comments to a Muslim student in front of the entire class.

"The teacher told the student that 'I bet you're grieving,'" the mother of a student in the same class told ABC13. "And she basically looked at him and said what are you talking about? And he said I heard about your uncle's death and she said wow, because she understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."

She added that the teacher "just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away" after the Muslim student ended up crying over the comments.

it's texas; they probably agreed with the teacher but didnt want cause a ruckus

Yes, insulting someone is a hate crime. It is a pretty appalling thing to say, but words are words. She is, however, a public official and should be fired for saying that.
 
Why would you even want to go to/live in Texas anyways?
 
Texas is huge, and certainly not all bad. Some of you might quite like Austin.

Most of what I know about Texas comes from the knowledge that the programing division of the last company I worked for had a boss who bought all the people there handguns as a bonus, and that they all brought their guns in to work.
 
I can't really blame the guy, Osama had 20+ brothers, he could easily have been her uncle.

I mean, how many muslims can there be?

I'm pretty sure verbal abuse/insult based on your race/religion counts towards as hate crime.

Like Uncle Sam? He probably wasnt saying that was her real uncle but more a symbol for her peoples. Guy apparently doesnt like muslims and is pretty stupid. Also hate crime legislation can **** right off. I love how New Speak managed to wriggle into being acceptable with legislation with the best intentions, written by heavy handed morons

I was mocked and insulted by teachers all the time I went to school. No big deal here...
 
for being a czech? I'd czech with the principle because that story doesnt czech out as something that is permissible in schools


also it's not a hate crime if I call you a ****ing n-word. however if I'm beating on you and screaming you ****ing ****** then yes it's a hate crime because it's motivated by race. simply calling some <insert racist word here> doesnt make it a hate crime. however if I say "all ******s should be killed" then that's a hate crime; because it's an incitement to violence. but this point is moot as hate crimes as well as rights differ from country to country
 
Often much more personal things than nationality, race or religion.

Pretty sure that's in the same class as a racial slur. Racial slurs are not hate crimes, they are words. I dunno if you live in another country, but in the US you can say whatever you like so long as it is not an immediate incitement to violence or disturbing the peace.

THAT SAID. As a public official he should be at the very least severely reprimanded if not outright dismissed with license revoked for such comments. That's part of being a public official is that you are supposed to be fired for that sort of shit.

Texas is a mixed bag, really. There are parts of Texas that are pretty normal, living here in DFW isn't much different than the suburbs of Chicago really at all in terms of how people behave. Living in Austin is like living in San Francisco with shittier weather. You go to East Texas, though, and all bets are off. Billboards with Obama and "SOCIALIST BY CONDUCT" can be seen regularly. Seriously, **** East Texas. Also, **** Houston. It's a shithole.

Yeah, hate crime as far as I know means an aggravated crime, usually a violent one - if no offence is committed that would be tryable without the 'hate' motive then by definition there is no 'hate crime'.

You know, trying to make a person from the US feel like his freedom of speech laws are stupid is a little like trying to make a European feel bad about his universal healthcare. It doesn't work.
 
The teacher probably said he was just joking so he got a slap on the wrists.

I remember seeing students being insulted by teachers, but this is when I was doing school in Australia. The schools that I did see there were absolutely terrible, and I have no idea how the entire faculty still had their jobs.
