A bill to allow college students and employees to carry their concealed handguns on campus won final passage today on a 19-12 vote in the Senate.

The bill would allow college students who are at least 21 years old and licensed to carry concealed handguns to bring those weapons into state campus buildings. University hospitals and athletic facilities would remain off limits to guns.

It applies to all universities and colleges in the state, but private institutions would be able to opt out.

Ugh. Well at least I graduated from my university (in Texas) in time to get out of this.

Why do you think these shooting sprees always occur in universities? Do you think it might just be because they're completely defenceless?

ok so I'm armed, I hear gun shots people screaming, I run down the hall only to be confronted by an armed student. we raise our weapons fire wildly, I hit him, he misses me but kills the librarian who running away. turns out neither of us are the shooter

WHOOPSEE! do I get a "do over"?

also it's not only in universities:

notice that in every single case there's one similiarity? their weapon of choice was guns?

anyways there's no way in hell my kids would go to a school that makes it easy for someone to stroll in, pull out a gun and start shooting people

also there's bill being tabled at the moment that would allow concealed carry in all federal parks ..just in case you're attacked by a bear and need to defend yourself with a pistol.

I dont care if the person is a crack shot who can take out a house fly from a 1000 yards. i stiull dont trust anyone with my life. especially someone who's untrained in crisis prevention

Wouldn't it be better to prevent everyone for taking a gun into university. They could have security to make sure that no firearms are allowed into the building very much like airports. No guns not shooting. Yet it seems like the typical American attitude is lets solve gun crime with more guns.

Heard about that one too. It looks like they're trying to stick it onto an entirely unrelated bill for credit card reform to get it passed. I hate how that somehow is able to work. If you feel like the only way to get something passed is by hiding it inside another bill, it obviously shouldn't get passed.

Anyways, I just realized I have to go back to school tomorrow so I can attend graduation. Hopefully nobody shoots me before I graduate. That would suck so much. I'd be like "Nooooooo. So close, but so far. Screw you, Texas!", give the middle finger to the state capitol building down the street, and then maybe my parents would be able to sue someone for a lot of money.

Somewhat unrelated to the university issue, but my grandpa owned a grocery store. One day a man robbed the store, but my grandfather ran out after him with a gun. Then the robber turned around and shot him and my grandma. My grandmother survived but grandpa didn't.

Sometimes, having a gun on you is MORE likely to get you shot.

And like Stern said, I'd be very afraid of stray bullets and/or mass hysteria from the people "defending" themselves.

is this necessary?? how about metal detectors??

Sure let's try it. Who knows? Maybe more people die, maybe less. I also believe computer controlled automated gun turrets could work.

My "look on the bright side" part of me thinks that this is good because we will finally get to prove that this is a terrible, terrible idea and only makes things worse.

Do you really think thats going to deter a school shooter? In case you haven't noticed, most shooters end up committing suicide at the end anyways. I'm pretty sure this will only make it easier for them to decide to do it, since now they wont have to have the balls to kill themselves.

And I know you're going to say "oh but we can stop him sooner this way!"

Perhaps, but I get the feeling that while it may result in less casualties per incident, the incidents will become more frequent, and ultimately more people will die. Throwing more guns into the mix is a stupid idea any way you cut it.

There's a famous American pro-gun expression,"God made men, Samuel Colt made them equal."

LOL This thread made me think of this.

Everyone I know who owns a gun, shouldn't own one. The only people I know who own guns and I feel safe with them having one, are people who used to be in the armed forces, and treat them with proper respect and safety.

Scary as hell.

No.

If that was so, how come these shooters aren't targeting day-care centers, or playgrounds, or anywhere else? It seems fairly obvious to me that it happens in universities and schools because they're high stress places, where maybe the shooter felt wronged/abused/depressed.

Like I said, a lot of the people I'd feel safe with owning a gun do not own them. The people who shouldn't own them usually tote them around like toys. I've shot quite a few guns myself, and yes, it can be fun, but they're also very dangerous even when you're trained correctly. The last thing I want is strained college students running around with deadly weapons that they may or may not know how to handle correctly and safely.

"Sir, the building is on fire!"
"Quick- does anyone have any gasoline? Goddammit we need gasoline to pour on all this fire! It might just stop it!"

UNT is a pretty liberal campus, so don't worry too much. Is the bill for sure going to be passed as law, or do we not know yet?

Either way, I guess we'd better start wearing bullet proof vests. Not only are we gonna have to worry about the shooters now, but now we get a chance to be caught in crossfire! Woot!

But how else can I be safe? People need to fear me. They need to think that I'll shoot them in their dicks.
We can only be secure if everyone fears for their genitals.

I'm sure that I'll be fine. In a way, I'm not surprised. One problem with concealed handguns being illegal on a college campus in Texas is this: since concealed handguns are legal state-wide, let's say you're a grad student who lives off campus (so it's legal for you to put your 9mm pistol in your jacket). What does this student do when they get on campus? Who decides then where you draw the line? Do you have a special "Gun Drop-off / Pick-Up" stand right where the entrance into campus begins?
It's a little disturbing for me to know that next fall some of my classmates will be packing heat, but I suppose it's only fair for a state that has this legalized already state-wide. Hopefully any nitwits that are packing heat will have had sufficient training to use it (which I doubt since so many people suck at driving, what makes me think that people will be good at using a different deadly machine?)

Lol, I can imagine band rehearsal...

"Dammit trombones, you missed your entrance again!"

"Sorry sir, my balls..."

BANG

Commerce Claus isnt real you newb hes like the easter bunny

Dammit - I'm heading to UNT in August.

Really? You mentioned band... are you a music major by chance?

UNT was one of my possible schools when I was trying to pick a university to study music at. I eventually went with my in-state institution (Central Washington) because of it's awesome music ed program.

Yes - I'll be starting my Master's in Trombone Performance this fall - a.k.a. I will be officially trombone-raped this year.
