the GTA IV thread

Amish, I just wanted to ask, what's the money situation like? I'm sure everybody's read that GTA IV is supposed to be just a "from rags-to-slightly-better-rags" storyline, so I just want to know if money is really that scarce.

One mission I did gave me (calculating...) around 90% of my current cash. With various deals I can strike with friends around LC I don't have to spend too much. Before that one mission though, buying nice clothes made a solid dent in my wallet.

If you die, you lose a proportion of your money. So far I've died 6 times and spent $21,000 on "Health Care".

Money isn't scarce at the point of the game I'm in unless I die a lot or if something happens where I lose a chunk of my money somehow (I have no clue yet if anything like that will happen). It wasn't too long ago that I had about $20,000 and buying a sniper rifle meant $5,000.

We need more amazing descriptions. Go do something insanely fun right now and report back to us.

I just love hearing your stories. GO NOW!

Hey Amish. Question for you.

Do cars on the freeway go at different speeds? Like are there some going one speed and some going even faster or slower passing or being passed by other motorists?

That would be awesome to have the occasional person speeding through like you see in real life. I would chase that person down and murder him... reenacting my fantasies whenever I see one of those crazy jackasses in real life.

In GTA:SA they went fast, but they all pretty much went at the same speeds if I remember correctly.

I kind of agree Sea. No magazine, website or any other publication should give out their max score. Doing such is claiming perfection. However, I can also understand their reasoning. To IGN, a 10 isn't perfect, but the overwhelming completeness, detail and pure atmosphere lends themselves to being as close to perfect as you can get.

I disagree; As I see it, no game will probably -ever- be perfect in every sense of the word, which I would define as catering, undiminituitively, to every imaginable audience or person.

Putting a 10 on a game works for me. If you look at it in a more realistic manner, it's basically the reviewer saying "No matter how low your budget is, if you have any interest in video games of this kind, it's without question worth your time and money."

The argument that reviewer makes about the game being a milestone is abit vague to me, as milestones in gaming generally have to grow a little before they're acknowledged as such (but maybe this has changed in the last few years), but it's simultaneously a well-founded reason for a max score.
Looking at games as a whole, any game pushing the boundaries for immersiveness and the general fun-factor (this is open to interpretation), which would be the reason I play games, should be regarded as a really important game in it's time. Putting a max score, or a ridiculously high score (98% etc which is a figurative max score) is an acknowledgment of that fact, and a good way to make sure the game stands out among the crowd of good-but-not-quite games.

And no matter HOW you put it, I'm completely certain you won't ever get away from the fact that reviews always are going to be subjective territory. That's what makes them interesting to read.

Ah, thanks! Money situation's not too bad then. So I guess you'll still be rich, just not the Overlord of Liberty City.

That is a great question. I remember playing GTA3, VC, and even Saints Row, they all had their cars go at exactly the same speed. It was the most annoying part of fleeting from a crime scene.

Escape several cop barricades. CHECK
Maneuver yourself to the highway. CHECK
Watch 10 cars block your path as they all travel the exact same speed and none of them react to your consist horn beeping. CHECK

LMAO! I love how you said "that is a great question" and then proceeded to completely not answer it.

You're right. And honestly it doesn't matter either way. IGN realizes the fact that no game can be perfect, but GTA IV is so close, you might as well slap the 10 on there. Giving GTA IV a ten is being ballsy because it just signifies a perfect game (which is probably why they do it only in a great while). We all know it's not true, but a 100% means 100% to someone who doesn't think about it. Like I said before, I really think the only reason they gave it a ten was because of SA's score.

Uh.. Do I look like Amish? :p

I don't even have the game so I would have no idea. Haha.

This, and also do cars use turn signals when they change lanes? I have too many memories of running from the cops and plowing in to the back of a car at 100mph because he moved into my lane when I was about five feet behind him.

They've already said they don't feel the game is perfect. A perfect 10 does not signify a perfect game to them. It would be ridiculous to have something on the score meter as perfect when perfect is unattainable.

Oh, THIS. ****ing hated driving down the freeway and having cars shoot across into my lane without warning. Indication would be a godsend.

ok the guy's being gay but he's gonna do some online play any time now

How is he going to do online play? It's disabled right now I think.

Oh wait, it's not Xbox live.

But these guys on Justin.tv get shut down.

I just noticed something weird from the IGN video review.

When in multiplayer one of the players jacked a vehicle I think an npc was in, and the car like... repaired itself.

Hmm. Weird.

Cars pretty much go the same speed so it's mostly like GTA:SA, but LC's faster routes are comprised of bridges and small highways which are 2 lanes each way. I don't know if there are any 3+ lane freeways in the game.

Some cars signal when they turn, some don't - just like real life (side: I HATE it when drivers just turn in real life and don't signal)

This still happens, but it'd kind of be silly if everybody got out of your way just because you honk. If people could get traffic in NY to move aside just by honking - THAT would be a sight to see :p

Overall I think the traffic patterns and behavior in LC are pretty accurate compared to what I saw when I was in NY a few months back. Rockstar did their homework.

Hmm indeed. Maybe when a new player gets in the car it is then put at 100% health?? Weird. Some kind of balancing issue/solution methinks if your observation is correct....

Hmmm, just watched it again and I saw what you mean. Oh well, it's a pretty small glitch, the game's not perfect, but it's damn well close.

Anyway, does anyone know what the third song is that plays in the review, after Ginuwine?

Whoo whoo. Are you gonna run train on everyone in this thread when the game is released?
Is that even a question?

Oh. Well, that is definitely true. I forgot NY is full of obnoxious drivers. :D

But no seriously, that is perfect. You know what, I just can't wait for the game that nothing will even bother me. I could care less about anything that bothered me in previous games.

I couldn't even make out the song in the background. The review itself just blew me away.

I have to wait until after school on Tuesday... D:

Poor me.

POOR YOU? I'll be getting it even later. I have to wait until like 7pm or so tuesday night before I get it. UPS has my house as like one of the last on their delivery routes, so it sucks.

I know there are people here who won't be getting it until later, but that's ok.

I have to wait for gamefly to send it to me. It says it releases on the 28th, so hopefully I'll get it wednesday.

Thank god I finished my semester last week! I literally have nothing to do, so I'm picking it up at Tuesday at midnight and playing it non-stop.

www.gametrailers.com has a video review coming out in 5 hours. When I wake up, I'm so going to look at it!

Of course people are getting all sorts of different times, so it's no telling how long.

Mine's said "watch now" since this morning. ****ing tease. :|

It says watch now on mine and I can't watch it :flame: Don't **** with me GT!!

Amazon says I'll have it by the 30th...

They better get me my GTA4

When will the GT review work, I can't wait and click like this all day... :(

Apparently it's up 9am PST, which is about 5 and a half hours from now.

Seriously, how ****ing hard is it to code a proper countdown, GT? What an amateurish mistake...

What? Another 5 hours?? Wtf have GT been smoking?

And I woke up early for this :(

Yeah seriously.

This guy is better at driving than the last few. Careful though because he appears to be doing missions atm. I have the sound down though so I can't hear the dialogue.

EDIT: Just saw him having sex with a hooker. It was hilarious.

I'm not even gonna get this game (at least not until the PC release), but I still read every post in this thread. Wonder why.

Heading up town to see if any small stores have an early copy in. :D Wish me luck!

Actually, don't, because it will just result in me getting to play GTA before the rest of you. :p

I reckon you will fail. The best time to find them would have been Friday morning. Shops got them in on Thursday and some places may have just assumed that Friday was the correct day. I doubt you'll be lucky today.

EDIT: Royal Mail got hold of my copy on Saturday morning. They may deliver it tomorrow! :O

Goddamn cocktease. The site I pre-ordered from has had it listed as "order shipped" since friday, but when I click the tracking number it gives me a 404.

Oh well, as long as it doesn't get here a day late... stupid living in a semi-rural area...
