The Magnusson Appreciation Thread

What was so good about Rosenberg I still don't get it ? just a regular scientist guy..or was he ?

Magnusson is awesome because hes such an arrogant yet smart guy, I don't like his Magnusson device though what he seems to call a magnificent weapon (it doesn't explode when hunters shoot at it, while it does when I shoot, and I mean comon cant you have some kinda switch to blow it up?!)

Please take your logic elsewhere :p ;)

It does explode when Hunters shoot at it. Try block their darts with one next time.

Shield me from the grammar, Samon!

Well the Hunters "darts" hit...then explode.

Oh! Uhh... I <3 Mag!

I liked him a lot. His extreme narcissism is a great counter-balance to the self-less nature of, well, pretty much everyone in the rebellion. Even Mossman betrays you to protect Eli, in her mind. Magnusson seems like the type to betray you if it means it would gain him greater notoriety. Remember that during the attack on the Silo his only concern was the rocket, not anyone else.

One interesting thing about Magnusson is that, despite the fact that he's an a-hole, he's usually right about all the stuff he bitches about - people goofing off and whatnot. For example, he rightly complained over the PA about Gordon not closing the silo door, because when I played it I was busy looking for medkits and such, not going straight to the silo door. Wasted a lot of time and who knows how many lives. He should have bitched me out in person afterwards.

He was wrong. You're knee-deep in combat and more than aware of the fact that the bleeding door needs closing. Rushing up to pull the lever is not sensible unless you plan on drawing all the fire, dying horribly and having the Combine flip the lever back and allow them to storm into the base killing everyone, destroying the rocket which of course then can't seal the portal and dooms all of humanity to servitude and it's all Magnusons fault.... <breath>.

LOL

Loved Magnuson, he was acting exactly how I imagine a real scientist would act under such extreme circumstances.

Also is Magnuson really Slick from HL1? Cause I don't see even a slight resemblance between the two...

He is brilliant, such a strong character! I love when he walks in and sarcastically moans that he is interrupting your little tea party, lol. :D

I lol'd too. :)

Simply brilliant!

I think there's an unspoken implication that we're meant to assume lots of thinks now look (and sound) different to our HL2/Source-engine equipped eyes, even if they happen to be something we've seen before in Black Mesa.

I've recently come around to the idea that the reception area we see in the Gman's speech is meant to be the same area we see at the beginning of HL1, since he starts talking about Black Mesa and 'BLACK MESA' flashes up on the screen behind him at the time. When you compare them closely, that area is quite different to the one you see within HL1. However it's within the bounds of belief that that is what a HL2-ified version of the Anomalous Materials reception would look like, if Valve were to remake it now. Same idea with the Magnusson being the cafeteria-Slick.

It's Slick. He may have gotten a graphical upgrade, but I know my arch-nemesis, no matter what kind of face lift he gets. I know that snobby, self-important air he puts on. That exuberant, haughty pride he feels at developing his little WEAPONS. Telling me how he can't bother to use his gluon gun or his Magnusson Device himself, but I'll have no problem with it. "I've found the perfect place for you, Freeman." Oh yes, I remember. I remember twenty years ago when Slick gave me nearly the same line about the gluon gun. I remember those eyes, those damn eyes. Appraising me. JUDGING me.

I'm going to kill him. And now, after typing this out, I've just realized I'm gonna find a way to do it with a Magnusson Device, just like I killed him with his own gun back in Black Mesa.

F*ck Slick.

And f*ck his casserole!

*dives out of the thread before Samon returns*

LOL!

I blow up that casserole with extreme prejudice every time I play through HL1

"My God what are you doing?!"

:LOL::LOL::LOL:

Why don't we honor Magnusson by using a microwave to blow up our own casseroles? :p

Any other developer would have handled magnussons chacacter traits in such as way as to make him thoroughly disliked by all those who play the game. However I love the way valve wrote the character and the their casting of the voice acting. Magnusson may be rather terse and extremely sarcastic at times but he certainly has the best intentions in mind with any of his actions and words.

Mmm, unless you believe that Kleiner's lab changes floors, the level design and gameplay effects aren't canon. I disregard illogical stuff like the blue laser snipers have as either: A) Gordon's suit amplifying invisible stuff, or B) Gameplay mechanics.

magnusson is an awesome person. But my question is, was he in half life 1. He mentioned something about a microwaved casserole. Was a character in hl1?

Did anyone noticed Magnusson's ""strider buster slaves"? He's got them locked up in a big cage with crates and bombs. When he orders them to do something one goes "yes sir" and gives him the Nazi salute.

*enables smod, smashes Magnusons head with a shovel*

Muahahah

I love it when at the end,
when you see Alyx and Eli celebrating the launch of the rocket
you hear Magnusson screaming "HAHAHA! I'm a GENIUS!" over the loudspeaker.

I was just under the impression they were on the other side of a locked gate...? Not in a cage, lol.

Magnusson is a prick. But he's a driven, competent, and well-meaning prick. And though it must SUCK to be one of his lackeys, meeting him as Gordon Freeman is a great experience.

Interestingly enough, his character practically demands that he be paired with the incompetent, absent-minded, but very personable Kleiner.

But I won't be truly happy until I get that hug he keeps welching on.

Maggy: What are you waiting for, Freeman? A Hug? Get down to the Second Silo!
Gordy: Are you saying I'm not getting a hug?

Alyx: You know, for a moment there, I thought he was going to give you a hug!
Gordy: But... he didn't... ;(

Well, he's no replacement for Breen, but he was good enough. The real payoff, of course, is when he thanks you. Pretty much every other friendly in the Half-life universe is overflowing with appreciation for Freeman, while with Magnusson, you feel you've really earned it -- he's not the sort of person who thanks people to be polite, he thanks people when they're really gone above and beyond his high expectations. Unfortunately, now that we've gotten that payoff that was being set up ever since the introduction of his character, I'm not sure what they'll do with him.

Yeah, I LOL'd at the way he banged on the fence. I'm not entirely sure that they gave a regular or Nazi salute though.

"Oh, I'm sorry, am I interrupting tea time? PERHAPS I'LL COME BACK WHEN IT'S MORE CONVIENENT FOR YOU!" Or something like that

Just checked it. It was a regular salute, but he held his arm outstretched a little longer than necessary... :p

Magnusson ****ing pwns. Seriously. I love it when he triesto thank you after the strider battle.

Check out Alyx's face when he thanks you. Priceless.

Bringing back Magnusson -

I thought it was hilarious that he could be heard in the background after the missile launch, while Alyx and Eli are talking about the greater significance of the event, shouting "My missile! Yes!" or something to that effect. Good stuff.

Yeah, that's what I like about him, the fact that good guys don't have to be nice guys. I don't like it when he bullies Kleiner and Lamarr though . No-one bullies Kleiner and Lamarr.

And yeah, it was fun watching Alyx's eyebrows and shizzle when he thanked me :D
