Hate freedom in the sense of perceived immoralities (Not necessarily our political freedoms) - open sex, "immoral lifestyles" according to their philosophy. Any of those things we can do.

Hate our way of life in the same manner, our religious culture isn't what the extremists want. And the secular culture isn't, either.

Hate US Foreign policy as it targets them directly- relating to our wish to spread the above two.

IMO the reason 9/11 happened was because they believed what they were doing was right.

Whether it is through upbringing, religious belief, political beliefs, the perpetrators justified their actions through the simple belief they were right.
