Thinking of start playing WoW

Wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

/thread.

It's pretty fun. If you like grinding? Personally I only still play it for the RP and the people I know.

Whenever you feel like starting to play WoW, get somebody to pinch/punch you.

As long as you're smart enough to quit when you get bored or if you start to let it take over your life then you might as well avail yourself of the entertainment it does have to offer.

This. It is such a timesink.

what?! they made it ever easier to level up, much much faster than your typical MMO now. you can get mounts at lvl 20 now I think, XP in PvP and its you get XP for a lot more stuff now. Plus the Achievements alone are worth the fun. I do the 6month bill thing and its like $11.99 a month that way. if you do the 1 year subscription its even cheaper per month, like $9.99 a month. Also they patch the game a lot and change it around so its even more rewarding to play.

Why don't you try the 10 day trial and then see if you like it. I did the 10 day trial back in '06 and within 5 days I was hooked and bought a copy.

Game is getting old now. Time for something new.

It's not addicting anymore. I play for 1 or 2 weeks with a renewed subscription and the following day I have a lack of interest of playing it anymore, so I end up not playing for around 3 months before playing for another 2 weeks. I wasted my money =/.

This. It is such a timesink.

Maybe a few years ago, but its so ridiculously easy to hit 80 now a days, especially after the latest patch.

Some things before you go in:

Leveling will be alot of fun. Even though you have your typical "Go get me 10 bear asses" quests littered about you really dont notice. Quality of quests improves as you hit the respective expansion packs too, Burning Crusade quests are a hell of a lot more fun then Vanilla quests, and Wrath of the Lich King quests are ****ing awesome.

One quest near level 80 has you riding on the back of a dragon, and using a harpoon to jump onto the backs of other dragons and punch vikings off of them

But of course endgame. You're either doing two things at endgame. You're either raiding or you're doing PvP. So, really endgame is dependent on whether or not you made friends and got into a guild on your way up to 80.

Just try the ****ing trial.

I am not saying it's not fun. I really enjoyed the expansion pack. It has the best quests in the game so far. Also it is very positive how Blizzard keeps redesigning the game and making it easier to play, without dumbing it down too much. But still, compared to other games, it is a timesink. eveling is indeed a lot faster. But it is still a timesink.

WoW is a really good party based game though. I knew some friends at work and their parents that got into it and we played for hours on end a few nights. theres time when you do raids too that last 6 hrs and its also amazing

Long raids are the worst part of the game. Really, you must have absolutely no life to be doing those 6 hour raids regularly. Even when I played and raided my guild only did 3 hour raids 2-3 times a week and that was bad enough.

Wrath of the Lich King quests are ****ing awesome.

This. Wrath of the Lich King was a absolutely great expansion, and much, much better than TBC. Northrend is awesome, the quests are awesome, the storylines are awesome etc. Of course, the fact that it may lead to Blizzard implementing Arthas' death kinda darkens that, but until they do, fun fun fun. Though personally, endgame stuff is overall pretty uninteresting. I mostly play for RP, and the journey there is usually much more fun. But it is a lot less grinding now, it's true which is good.

But you have to get to such a high level to be able to do this kind of crap, which is what I hate about it. In single-player RPGs you're thrust into the middle of an epic story and blah blah blah, whereas to do anything good in many MMOs you need to play for months, and even then it's just a two hour instance or a bunch of text no one reads.

Also not sure what kind of RP you're talking about.

It will still take you hundreds and hundreds of hours to reach max level, and no, it won't be fun. At all.

Then at max level you can have the fun of realizing the arena PvP is nothing but a pile of shit and that you can't find any good groups for the PvE content (a.k.a. boring bullshit) because you won't be a member of a good guild thanks to joining the game so late.

Go for it.

Yeah if you sit there and just grind without doing a single quest ever.

WoW is easily one of the friendliest MMOs around when it comes to getting to the max level.

Also, I think the newer Raids (Ulduar, and most recently Trial of The Grand Crusader) are pretty awesome but thats just me. Hell with patch 3.2 having just being released you wont even have to worry about the raids that were introduced when the expansion pack first hit, since the new 5 man dungeon has practically lets you bypass them completely.

Is this game playable by playing alone most of time? Without any guild or party or anything to accomplish quests and such.

Yes. The majority of the games quests are soloable. Hell some classes (hunters, warlocks, paladins) can solo most of the games group quests very easily if you know what you're doing. You can literally not be in a group ever until level 80 where it's required for dungeons and raids and what have you.

And now you hang out with me and pitz on the hl2.net channel in EvE. We are a ****ing cool bunch really, it must be said.

What you reckons sandy dee?

Bunch of ****ing whiners in this topic.

"WAAAAAH I won't see anything cool because I joined late!"

This could have been a valid complaint back in Vanilla WoW when progression actually required a hefty timesink. But when you hit 80 these days, you can faceroll through Heroic Dungeons for gear. All the entry level raid content can be cleared by any group of strangers. Hell, in the most recent patch they made it so currency for high-level loot drops in every instance in the game. And there are plenty of guilds out there recruiting regularly, whether you're casual or hardcore.

They've buffed all XP gained from old content. They give you rested XP. If you have a friend who already plays, they can give you a 300% XP buff until level 60. What the **** are you people bitching about?

Download the trial and see how you feel about it. That's all that can be said.

Yeah pretty much. Find a friend to play with you and do the whole RAF (refer a friend), and you'll level incredibly fast.

Sure how often do we play 6 hours straight? I know I never do unless I have EVE on in the background on autopilot while I'm reading a book, watching TV, chatting on skype or whatever.

The 6 hour thing really only applies to Vanilla WoW, where raids were long due to Blizzard not knowing what the **** to do regarding gear and classes. Everything was broken.

Now a days, provided you're playing with people who know how to play their class then you can run through a raid in about 2 to 3 hours. Hell the newest raid is literally something like a 10 minute encounter right now.

Ulduar can be trying at times, especially if you're trying hard modes. But yeah, Trial of the Crusader and all that crap are just single-run gauntlet events. All you have to do is learn the fight.

The game's a piece of shit now. Don't let any of these fools trick you into thinking otherwise.

And yes it ****ING WILL take you hundreds of hours to get to max level! Jesus ****ing Christ. I've been in a "top" guild, I know the damn game, and I'm telling you it's not even close to being worth the massive amount of time required.

And I think you're full of crap because it doesn't take hundreds of hours unless you suck ass. Hard.

Besides, time spent at endgame progression is entirely separate from the time spent hitting the level cap. Your being in a "top" guild is irrelevant to that.

I enjoy WoW, and I end renewing my subscription every year at around Christmas time, but I've never been able to get passed level 58 on it and as soon as it comes to group quests/raids I'm ****ed because I don't know anyone on the server anymore.

I've tried joining guilds in the past and they've never helped. I completely have no idea of what to do so I've just stopped playing. Which is a shame because I'd really like to see what Northrend looks like.

If you have a character past level 55, roll a Death Knight and just faceroll yourself to 80. Its so easy to level with them its ridiculous. You can solo nearly ever group quest up until 80 with a death knight.

Thinking of start playing WoW
Lay down the cost of the game and a years worth of monthly payments - in cash - on the table in front of you, then ask yourself it it's worth it.

Alternatively, just kill yourself.

type /played and it will show you how many hours your character has played in game, and the amount of hours you put into that specific level. my undead mage has just over 24 days which is like 576 hrs. i also let the game go akf for dinners, breaks, even downloads....so yeah its probably closer to 500 hrs

I used to play WoW, but I've stopped now. Main reason: When you've capped your level you have to find a guild and raid with it to get any further and I can't be arsed to look for one.

I played it for a year at the most. It was kinda disappointing at first, then very addicting for a while, then disappointing again. I didn't really enjoy the whole Massively Multiplayer Online part, only the RPG part.

Basically, I only met a handful of people that I liked, and if you play enough, there is a good chance they will get on your nerves or become your enemies.

Towards the end, I joined a guild that was using speech chat, and they were good people, but I thought it kind of took me out of the game to be honest.

And remember, talking to a wow player is like playing chess with a pidgeon. The pidgeon knocks the pieces off the board, then shits on the board and still thinks he won.

Only good thing I found about wow was the enviroments. For such low poly count they really made some artistic views.

Don't listen to all the fags that say it takes over your life, that's ridiculous.

I did that, the opening quests with the death knight were awesome and then I moved out to the Burning Crusade lands and started questing there before I got stuck at lvl 58 on a group quest.

I've played it on a private server(WoWscape/Scapegaming) for a few months, and it was great though the server sucked.
If you're rich I think it's worth playing, and considering you need less other games it won't be more expensive than buying 1 new game each month.
