Twitter hit by denial of service attack
The popular social networking site Twitter has been hit by a denial of service attack, according to Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. In an e-mail to CNN.com, Stone said this morning's attack is not related to a recent incident in which a hacker stole internal documents from the site. Twitter's site went down around 9:30 a.m. ET. A message posted on Twitter's status blog said the site was active again by 11:30 a.m., but that the site remained under attack.

kinda funny, I only use twitter to find deals on games and electronics but i know people at work who use it religiously and its really funny to see them update their boring lives every 10 seconds

Also I just surpassed the amount of people that i follow with followers and i also post up bargain shopping links and a lot of steam/hl related stuff


EDIT: Now Facebook is being attacked, oh lordy lordy lord

The social media world is under attack. Earlier this morning, Twitter acknowledged that its downtime was the result of a malicious Distributed Denial of Service attack (DDoS), and now Facebook tells us that their intermittent site problems are also the result of DDoS activity.

According to a Facebook spokesperson “Earlier this morning, Facebook encountered network issues related to an apparent distributed denial of service attack, that resulted in degraded service for some users. No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users. We’re continuing to monitor the situation to ensure that users have the fast and reliable experience they’ve come to expect from Facebook.”

In other words, we’re in the midst of a deliberate attempt to take down two of the world’s most popular social media sites: Facebook and Twitter. Additional reports indicate that popular blogging community Live Journal has also been having service issues today – most likely, not a coincidence, though we don’t yet have confirmation from them.

It would be kind of hilarious if the attacks only started with Twitter and Facebook, then escalated into a full scale virtual virus bomb against general internet communication. Message boards, social networking, instant messaging and other ways would be attacked by this. Social apocalypse all over the intarwebz.
