UEFA Euro 2008 Cup

Something I've noticed is that it's been a very high class of the games so far. We've seen some excellent football in almost every game. The only really boring one was the one between France and Romania.

Go Hiddink!

And I agree with Monkeh: really enjoyable games so far.

Cavalry called it.

Much better Russian team today. Pavlyuchenko played great. If they don't concede early against Sweden and sink into the trademark Russian Melancholy, then it could be a close game.

After Russia's last game, there is no doubt in my mind that Sweden will destroy Russia.
I beg to differ, if Russia play like that again, the Swedes are in trouble.

I'm really glad England aren't in this tournament now, as said above the football so far has been a delight to watch, I've not been disappointed by hardly anyone. When England play they really are the epitome of a disjointed, un-gelled group of players playing football no where near the standards of the teams in this tournament. If they played the Netherlands now, they'd lose 5 - 0 (at least). Hopefully a wake up call...

/hugs all Swedes

Yes, let us all hug the Swedes.

I take dibs on the third from the left in the standing row. And otherwise the left crouching one.

i'd still put my money on spain. or maybe netherlands.

How the hell did Czech lose?

but what a ****ing comeback by Turkey, they played very well that second half.

Best match so far - Turkey 3 - 2 Czech Republic.

Best keeper in the world handing it to Turkey on a plate and a great Nihat goal.

Turkey deserved it when conceding while down to 10 men and Jakulovski etc timewasting.

WOW! What a finish to a game. As an impartial spectator, I wanted Turkey to equalise but I also vaguely wanted the Czechs to win it in the end.

But let that match be a lesson - NEVER ****ING STOP PLAYING! You have no right to expect to win or even draw a match if after a goal or two you continually drop off, stop marking people, stop pressuring the ball, etc.

In the end Turkey fully deserved to win but the Czechs - the whole team - handed them the game. People can heap all the blame they like on poor old Cech in goal, but the fact is that even before the equaliser Turkey had a bunch of crosses they could have knocked in blindfolded if they'd had a single guy at the far post. A goalie is only the last line of defence, and if the ball is continually making its way to him then something has already gone wrong with the way you're playing. Sure, Cech screwed up - but even with that equaliser, why were the defence dropping off and allowing crosses to come in? Why did that right back let the Turk get to the dropped ball first? Collective responsibility.

All credit to the Turks though. The finish on that 3rd goal - wow.

Ahh crap I watched the first half and thought it would be a boring match so stuck a film on, thats it, Im watching the matches fully from now on.

Edit: HOLY SHIT that is one of the greatest 1 on 1 finishes I have ever seen, beautiful goal!

Cech.
World Class.

Anyone got a link to watch highlights of the Swiss/Portugal game? Bit of a surprising result there, even though it didn't matter to either team.

Portugal was playing with a b-team to save themselves against the match with Germany.

I read a report from Jamie Rednapp in the paper today and he said two of his mates said they were glad England werent in the Euros since they would just be outclassed, he thinks if England were in it they would be up there with Holland and Spain, not with France and Italy.

I have come to a conclusion that he is mad.

England's perennial problem is mentality. Lazy spoilt prima donnas playing 60 minute matches with no real belief in what they're doing will never win a tournament. Unfortunately it's not a problem that can be fixed by introducing new talent alone. It wasn't a sudden injection of new talented players that inspired us to do well in, say, Euro 96 for example, but a bunch of old veterans (like Gascoine, Sheringham and Shearer) suddenly believing they had what it took and really getting into the faces of their opponents.

Unfortunately it takes a tournament on home soil in front of England fans to energise England to a level that most high-class national teams would consider just average. Out in the wilderness they sink into melancholy and sloppiness, and don't have a hope. Even with the more recent national tourneys in which England have competed, in games they have won and received praise from pundits desperate for some success they can latch onto, England's performance has been characterised by that shitty 'sneak 1 lucky goal in then shut up shop' cowards' attitude to football. Ditch it.

It's ****ing Jamie Redknapp, what do you expect?

I totally agree with him, 4 billion percent...as I said on the previous page...

England deserve to be where they are.

Welcome to our world, Engerland! :D

Oh floweeeeeer o' Scotlaaaand.....

Gomez's miss in the first half :O Are you ****ing kidding me? What a pos.

German's beat the Austrians 1-0... Pretty unspectacular from the Germans, but generally solid. They still defended too much after going ahead, but at least they defended a bit more positively than some teams do. Even so, a better team would have dismantled that defence, it's just that the Austrians didn't have the quality to be able to capitalise...

I'm still mystified by this whole thing of managers bringing on a team's best players only 20 minutes from the end (especially with a team that's not exactly overflowing with talent in the first place). I mentioned that happening with Kienast in the Austria-Poland game, and it happened here again.

Oh and beautiful free kick from Ballack.

Again a main role for the refs. Two coaches sent off lol wut?

I do hope the Germans kick some Portuguese ass.

Damn right!

Read somewhere (The Times maybe) that this is a North vs South tourney. Germany/Holland vs Spain/Portugal

Croatia slot in there somewhere :p

God dammit, I was really hoping Italy would be making an early leave this year. Oh well, they won't last long.

Italy 2-0 France

Things that sucked about that game:
Italy
The refereeing

Things that really really sucked terribly about that game:
France

I actually missed all of France's other games, and wow, I was taken aback by the shoddiness of their performance. They played the shabbiest of any team I've seen in this tournament so I'm not surprised they've finished bottom of their group. A well deserved exit.

YES!
Just caught the highlights of the Netherland/Romania game.

Netherlands-2
Romania-0

The Dutch have now scored 9 goals with 7 players. That's pretty win. It seems Van Basten really made a team out of all the 23 players. Even the 'subs' play as a collective (although they needed one half to get into it). I hope we get Russia on saturday. Suits our playing style best.

Wtf was up with Luca Toni tonight btw? He should have scored at least 3 times. Good game for Italy though. And poor Thierry Henry. The 2nd one was his own goal.

France was pretty strong against the Netherlands. Far, far more dangerous than Italy ever was.

I ****ing hate Italy. France isn't my favourite team, but still way above Italy. They have a way of clinging on to the tournament somehow. Wouldn't surprise me if Italy wins the whole thing now. That's just the kind of douches they are.

Anyway, Russia - Sweden tonight. We should be able to beat them, but shit can happen.

Russia-Sweden should be interesting, but I don't know if I'll be able to see it.

And I hate Italy too, but on that showing France were lucky not to have come away losing 4-0...

I like France, but then I've been liking Italy since 2002 World Cup.

Thats what you get when you pick old veterans for your squad, Italy and France did it and Italy only just got to the quarters by the skin of their teeth, but they should be battered by Spain. Henry would have scored three times in that game had he been in his prime, just not cutting it anymore and he needs to hang up his international boots, just like 90% of the others lol.

And just to strengthen it, I REALLY hope Spain batter Italy, my mate is supporting them at the moment and he doesnt really know much about football, claims the first game they lost was purely because the referee was unfair, and he also claims Italy invented counter-attacking in football, iritates me so I just hope they get ravished so I can laugh at him.

Whaaaat, you don't get HAMMERED by the Dutch just due to bad refereeing... The counterattacking thing is so ironic too, that the whole reason the scoreline was the way it was was down to brilliant counterattacking by the Netherlands.
