Due to the success of the Most over-rated games thread,I've decided to start a most over/under-rated movie thread.

Please state the movie you feel is over/under-rated and why. Feel free to challenge other peoples opinions, but in a respectful manner.

Under-rated
Donnie Darko: dark mind provoking film that no one saw in theatres but is finally getting to respect it deserves on dvd.

Unbreakable: In my opionion this is one of the greatest films ever made, yet it didn't get as much attention as M. Night Shyamalan's other 2 films . It's better then the Sixth Sense and FAR BETTER then Signs( the Village looks good though).

Almost Famous: This is the best coming of age movie ever made and deserved the oscar for best picture but lost to Gladiator( better that then ~cough~ Shakespeare in Love~ cough~).

Over-rated:

The first to Harry Potter movies: Why are these films good? Don't ask me, its 2 and a half hours of repetative nonsense where they spend most of there time searching for answers that are right in front of them and when the mystery is solved things that they should of attended to are cancelled( thats convenient).

Signs: Praised as M. Night Shyamalan's best film. SIgns is about aliens and the existence of god. He uses the same style of story telling as his preivious 2 films where the film ends completely different from what you could've imagined but unlike the previous 2 I kinda saw the ending coming and wasn't impressed( it also had crappy alien affects).

Thats my opinion, whats yours?

Under-rated: Hudson Hawk (Waaaaay ahead of its time, still ahead of its time actually)

Over-rated: The 6th Sense (All of Shymalan's movies actually, the guy definitely has talent, but "the next Hitchcock?" Uhhh.....no.)

Underrated:

Jacob's Ladder - one of the greatest movies ever imo, and possibly Tim Robbins best (although the Shawshank Redemption is fantastic) A wonderfully freaky tale brought to life by an excellent direction and top acting.

Overrated:

The Fast And The Furious - some people honestly like, what I consider to be, one of the worst movies ever made (after Spawn) What a complete bag of shite.

Over-rated (In my opinion of course): Braveheart

Under-rated (as you said already): Donnie Darko. Such a good movie in everyway.

Definitely extremely under-rated, can't believe I missed that one.
Finally something we both agree on Warbie

Can't forget Pitch Black, great scifi and though it spawned the chronicles of Riddick, few know that.

Underrated:
The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, people said that these movies are the worse movies they have ever seen. I thought they were good movies, not as good as the first but they were above average movies.
The Big Lebowski:
Hilarious movie but seems like everyone hates it but me and Greyknight.

Overrated:
I can't think of any right now(can't remember the names).

Shyamalan is overated as a writer. Whilst he does have a talent for directing he should stop going for the 'twist' ending approach to all his films. It worked for the Sixth sense as no one knew Shyamalan had a penchant for twist endings but now people who go to the cinema to see his films expect the twist and will see it coming a mile away!

I know how his new film 'The Village' ends and imo its a cheap and tacky ending.

Did you guess the ending or really know it? Because I think it looks like a great movie.

That suprises me, Everyone I know loves he Big Lebowski :) Along with Withnail and I, it's the funiest movie ever \o/

(don't agree about Reloaded and Revolutions though)

What are you talking about? Everyone loves that movie.

Underrated / Underwatched :

-Equilibrium (probably because it had virtually no advertisement - very 1984-ish)
-American Psycho (HEY PAUL!!! & I have to return some videotapes)
-Fight Club (I know it's quite popular - also my favorite movie - ...but I still run into tons of people that have yet to see it)

Overrated:

-Fast and the Furious (So lame...kinda cool cars...but that wears off after about 35 seconds...)

Oh...and I don't think it's overrated by any means...but Chronicles of Riddick sucked my nuts... I laughed out loud when the sunrise on that one planet (700 degrees) made the rocky ground burst into a huge inferno. Also when he spun down the rope to break his cuffs (you have to see it to understand what I'm talking about) I soooo wanted him to dislocate both his arms and start just screaming in pain, "OH GOD!! WHAT HAVE I DONE?!" Oh yeah...maximum security prison with a handy rope right out the top to the control center...weird.

Underated:

Donnie Darko
Donnie Brasco
Hoodlum
Matrix reloaded (makes partial sense)
big fish
Edward scissorhands

Overated:
Harry potter(s) 1,2
Lord of the rings: ROTK (it was awesome, but I expected much more from Aragorn)
fast and the furious

Most underated actor:
Micheal Keaton

Most overated actor:
Tom cruise

I do actually know it... Unfortunately for Shyamalan the ending is no big secret anymore.

Enigma is a great movie that's very underrated/underwatched.

Oh yea, Equilibrium is under-rated as well!

I watched that yesterday, it was a really good film!

edit - i didn't know brian connelly (sp) and sean bean were in it, and the guy out of cold feet was in it too!

Underrated/Underwatched:

Memento
Rushmore
The Royal Tennenbaums
Pi
Requiem for a Dream

MAYBE underwatched but I wouldn't call anyone of those films underrated. They all got very very good reviews. I love all of those.

Under-rated:
Kung-Pow! So hilarious ;p I only know a couple people who agree that movie was funny
I have to admit though, seeing it's commercials for it, I didn't want to watch it at ALL, but when I actually did. I was rollin'

I didn't think Equilibrium was that great, that whole Gun-Fu thing was kind of lame.

-Fight Club (I know it's quite popular - also my favorite movie - ...but I still run into tons of people that have yet to see it)
There are people that haven't heard of Fight Club? Blasphemy :O

Underrated:
Boondock Saints- I had never heard of it until my friend told me to rent it. Most people like me haven't heard of it either.

Overrated:
The Big Lebowski- On contrary to the earlier poster, a very large portion of people think this movie is the best movie and was a gift from god. I personally thought it was funny but it wasn't that good.

LOTR!! (omg! no Fenric NOnonoNO~!O!!!) jkjk

over rated movies = Matrix 2 + 3

Another Under-rated:
Leon (aka The Professional here in US)
I think it was a very well-made film. Jean Reno stars in it. I don't know many people who seen this film but the people I DO know think it's a very good movie.

hells ya

Midnight Express is also very under-rated. Not because people don't like, its just the opposite most who see it like it. But its not very well known by our generation and it is the best prison movie ever made.

I forgot about Boondock Saints and Equilibrium, both of those movies are awesome. And that is weird that you know so many people that like The Big Lebowski, most of my friends haven't even heard of it and if they have they think it sucks because they didn't understand it.

I couldn't agree with you anymore, as that is quite possibly one of the best movies in existence. It has everything: Drama, action, guns, humor, excellent story and plot, a great twist ending... oh, and boobs too :naughty:

Under-rated:
A.I. By Steven Speilberg.

I liked it alot. It had a heart and spirit where you can tell that the actors and the director are pouring their heart out in their performances. With Kubrick's original story, you get the best of both worlds, something peaceful, yet eerie and often violent at the same time.
It reminds you how touching films can be, even if some people don't understand it. And don't throw out the ending, it may be far-reaching, but thus is science fiction, and David's story which makes it all the more fitting.
For all those interested in science fiction, robots, and that tinge of childhood, go see A.I.

NOOOOO! You stole my underrated movie! One of my most favorite movies but no one has seen it. Everyone I tell to watch it loves it. Over all a great movie.

"We do not ask for your poor or your hungry. We do not want your tired and sick. It is your corrupt we claim. It is your evil that will be sought by us. With every breath we shall hunt them down. Each day we will spill their blood 'til it rains down from the skies. Do not kill, do not rape, do not steal. These are principles which every man of every faith can embrace. These are not polite suggestions these are codes of behavior and those of you that ignore them will pay the dearest cost. There are varying degrees of evil, we urge you lesser forms of filth not to push the bounds and cross over into true corruption, into our domain. But if you do one day you will look behind you and see we three, and on that day you will reap it- and we will send you to whatever god you wish. And shepards we shall be, for thee my lord for thee, power hath descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command, and we shall flow a river forth to thee, in teeming with souls shall it ever be, in nomine patri, et fili, et spiritus sancti."

I've never even heard of this Boondock Saints but because of all the positive feedback I will rent it tomorrow.

Does it end like this

Outside of the woods is actually the real world, present day, not the 1800's

If that's true I don't see how it's cheap and tacky...

That actually sounds like kind of an interesting premise.

I doubt thats the real ending, otherwise why would people be scared of the things in the woods?

Sparta said:

Because the village elders have to keep up the status quo to stay in power, so they keep the people afraid.

Hmm...I see some interesting parallels to the real world developing here.

OMG I wish I didn't read that. :(

Overrated films:

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - I honestly don't know why this is so popular. The action is not as good as Hong Kong films even 10 years ago. Even the story is cliched, if you watch a lot of Chinese films.

Saving Private Ryan - this film was ok, but not great. The Thin Red Line was much better.

More overrated movies here

Underrated:

Rushmore
Donnie Darko
Ground Hog Day

haha... top gun in the over rated list!! I love top gun just for that reason... its just pure laughable cheese which makes it brilliant!!

OMFG!!!!! You thought the thing red line was better than Saving Private Ryan? OMFG....ahhhhh, I am not insulting you I just think you are very confused. Saving Private Ryan was the movie about a squad of Rangers that had to find Private Ryan, the thin red line was some crap movie about the Army in the Pacific(who the hell would make a movie about the army in the Pacific anyways, crappy story idea). It is one of the best directed films ever made, there is not a single thing wrong with the movie.

Well, that's your opinion of course. I personally am just sick of WWII. I also found Saving Private Ryan to not be very moving.
