University

I start at Exeter next Saturday (27th) to study Civil Engineering.

Should be fun?

It's an amazing city, you'll enjoy it.

It would be a shame not to also explore the surrounding countryside, however. I live fifteen minutes away from the city centre but it may as well be the middle of nowhere in my little village. Devon is a stunning place, so get out and explore it!

Notable haunts that are a short car journey away include the Thorverton Arms in my village, a great pub/inn which has won multiple awards for food, and the Beer Engine in Newton St. Cyres, also great for food and they brew their own beer!

Oxnaforda
I love that name!

I'm currently living in Witney, which is West Oxfordshire and also the constituency of David Cameron. Moved down about month and a half ago. I go into Oxford quite regular - good fun going round the pubs there, but I've yet to find somewhere with great music... will be trying Coven II at some point.

The surroundings were one of the reasons I chose Exeter. Nothing more relaxing than a nice walk around a good scenic location with the population of zero (excluding yourself of course).

Plus, we all know that down south they have climate control ;)

Aye. A lot of students I feel never really get to see what's outside Exeter because they don't drive and that makes it a lot more effort to see the countryside. It's quite a small place really so making use of the countryside will considerably expand your things-to-do!

A few of us are planning to spend a few days camping in Dartmoor some time soon. Should be an awesome experience.

I almost wish I'd gone a physicsy route - it was my favourite of the sciences at school.

Instead, however, I am happy where I am:
and some more blablabla

But why? I mean Jesus ****, you could have become insanely rich, uncovered the secrets of
the universe, known how to make a space rocket, a ****ing space rocket, I want to make a
space rocket. Hell you could have probably bought the original version of all those lame old
books you read.

Well, going for PhD is still on the table for me right now. I would like to focus on Russian history with a social and political view, so maybe an analyst job related to that, or a professor.
That's pretty awesome. I'm thinking of minoring in Russian if I get a chance, although with more of an emphasis on literature than history (although Russian history is really interesting).

Goddamn, kickass schedule man.

What what? In my butt?

You have a kickass schedule too. I'm especially jealous of your Beat Writers class.
I started a month ago. What I'm studying is pretty much European history ATM, but it's really complicated. We have at most 8 hours of class time per week, what about you guys?
8 hours? man. I have about 15-18 hours of class a week - 15 credit hours + a few recitations / discussion groups.

I've got everything near enough packed to move into my new house tomorrah! Setting off (dad's driving me because mum's car failed it's MOT so I can't drive no more :() at about 10:30am, and I'll get there about 12-12:30.

Going back to re-attempt Third Year sometime in October. I'm not even entirely sure when I'm going back to be honest. I'm only going back because I've pissed so much money away on going in the first place that I have to try and have something to show for it by the end.

The best thing about Intermitting half-way through the year was the way that not one person on staff has wondered where I got to. Such is the life of the Humanities Cash-Cow. At least I'm probably financing the further education of someone who actually needs the money.

I have 30 hours a week. Stupid undergrad engineering course. ;(

Sucks to be you lol

Seriously, the time you're not in class you gotta read the books. Personal responsibility is everything. If you just go to the 8 hours of class you're gonna have a tough time at the exam.

Yeah. I have 15 hours of class a week and about 30 hours of work out of class, most of which is reading / taking notes. Uni this year is really a challenge, I'm finally developing a work ethic (under tremendous pressure). For instance, tonight I've already read a bunch for my italian archaeology course, and written a small essay on it (800 words) like I have to every week. Next I have to read an essay by Nietzsche and respond to it, and then I have to spend the rest of the night studying my ass off for my first Anthropology exam on Tuesday, as well as doing a bit of Italian language studying for tomorrow.

I know, what am I doing on HL2.net right now?

I've a good friend who has headed down to his accom at Glamorgan today. At the moment, going by the way our MSN conversation is going, he seems to be very drunk and cannot seem to stress enough how much he 'fukin luoevs uni'

Do any of you guys have home exams instead of classroom exams? When you get 1-3 questions and you got a week or so to write small essay answers for them with the books in front of you. I learn a lot more from them that I do from regular ones, as you analyse the text rather than memorize it.

That reminds me, I have a terrible ****ing work ethic sometimes. I should be reading through a novel and finishing a paper right now.

I didn't ever need to develop a work ethic in school before university because it was always more or less a breeze and I could get by doing the absolute bare minimum. Now that doesn't work at all and I've had a ton of trouble adjusting. My GPA last year was a 2.5, but I'm a lot more on top of stuff this year. My problem is that I'm completely unmotivated to force myself to do work in lieu of forums/gaming/friends - the only time I have anything remotely resembling a work ethic is when I get incredibly stressed out due to procrastination and hunker down. That's happening tonight... my Anthropology exam on Tuesday is for the first 6 weeks of class, and I didn't go to any of it or do any of the reading so I have to learn all of it tonight and tomorrow.

Mostly that sort of thing is homework for me. For my German philosophy class for example I have one reading each week (usually not too long, 20-50 pages, but incredibly dense most of the time), and six essay questions - 3 to turn in at the beginning of the week after doing the reading, and 3 to turn in at the end after the week's lectures.

I've had take-home exams too, but they are usually pretty intense and I don't necessarily prefer them to in-class exams. Usually they give us a list of topics and have us write a few papers about them.

I had a class like that... Energy Technology & Policy class. We weren't analyzing texts, just researching information and doing calculations. I didn't like it that much since it took more time than just studying, and I always put it off 'til a day or two before it was due.

I actually get a lot of night exams outside of class, because our exams are too long to fit in a single class period. Usually the exams are only about two hours, but for one class, we had 3-hr-long exams from 7-10 pm at night, three times throughout the semester. That's like taking three final-length exams for the same class. And it wasn't just a lot of extra time to check your work... there were three problems on each exam, and each problem took about an hour to do.

I had so many night exams freshman and sophomore year that I thought it was normal, until I found out that other people usually have in-class exams. :|

Right now I am just completely drained. Barely got any sleep last week, and had to wake up early Saturday and Sunday. I also have a big lab report due today; homework interspersed throughout the week; meetings on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday; a night exam the Monday after that......

Basically my story, cept' I took a bunch of creative writing and absolutely no requirements second semester last year to pad my GPA. This year I'm looking at becoming more disciplined and forcing myself into doing well so I can transfer in the spring to a place where I'd be more happy socially. Basically I'm at a huge damn university right now and I'm a bit lost (and don't feel independent enough because I'm forced to commute). But 'chea, it's a lot harder to just breeze by now. Hell, I'm writing this at 5am because I woke up in a random anxious attack, had some shitty dream (nightmare?) about forgetting to write a response paper.

He sounds like a right card. First year? What's he doing?
On the home front, the move went very smooth. Loving my room so far, it's all nice and neat and that. Just got internet so it's all good :)
Will be heading into uni to meet with a friend or two tomorrow. Got a mate from last year who's gone back into halls (en suite--the brilliantest), so I might go give him a viewing. Too bad the en suite halls are up a stupid bloody hill which killed me all year.

First year, Sports Psychology... or something.

Second year houses = god tier. Having a double bed is nirvana compared to home.

Europeans and their 'uni' talk :P.

I'm in my third year studying Civil Engineering. Yay for applied physics degrees. *shoots self in head*

I'mma take Uni Entrance Exams in... a month.

I start prepping my portfolio for uni... well, now. The thing I love about the college course I'm on now is that they devote like 4 months towards getting all of our Route B UCAS shizz sorted out. When I was in sixth form, it was a goddamn mess the way they went about getting everyone through the applications. I didn't take part in it because I'm applying next year, not now, but watching my friends you could really see how stressfull our school had made it for them.

Hell yes, this! I've got a double bed and it's just awesome. Also wireless internet is awesome. Currently I'm sitting downstairs listening to music blaring from my laptop, running off battery power while I eat breakfast. Might stay down here a while. Wouldn't/Couldn't have done this in halls. I feel sorry for my mate who's still there.

I had single beds in both the houses i lived out in for the last two years. Queen sized bed now though :D

I just finished freshers week.

Man, that was ****ing insane. So much drinking. I just walked around campus going into random flats and drinking with who-ever was inside.

Had some good sex too.

Manchester - Computer Science. Started on Monday, moved in on Saturday, got my key on Thursday. Start lectures next Monday.

Alchohol is good.

Well, this week I officially quit college. Because I'm going to apply to another one. I studied information technology or whatever it's called for about 2 years, on and off, didn't get much done anyway, and that really wasn't something I want to do. I like wasting time with computers, but god dammit that programming stuff is just boring and too complicated to learn if you're not 100% motivated. Feels really good actually, now I'm free to choose again and this time I'll actually start studying something I could imagine doing for a living. Something less "technical" is what I'm after.

You cheated on your woman?

****ing Freshers' flu. Didn't get it last year, but it's royally ****ed me up this year.

I <3 uni even though my course is pretty hard (electronics and communication). We all get laptops though, and the whole campus is wi-fi'd so there's a lot you can do after hours.

40 Hours a week...
In the university of life. llawll.

But that's actually easier... needing a roof over your head and needing to eat serve as consistently powerful motivational tools.

Is that 40 scheduled or 40 you're supposed to do?
