If he's smart, he used a proxy to come to this site, and is using hacked webspace. But that'd be funny if that really is his school's site.
He's really not. His plan was made so simply (I would have used at least an installer). Scams that use the user/pass interface of a website have been going on and are the most common form of getting someone's user and pass. This punk isn't clever enough to fake his IP.

Why the **** did you people want a silver upgrade if you already have the game?
Because Silver included HL: Source and "the entire Steam back catalogue", aka: HL and all official related titles/expansions.

he's not going to get in trouble. no police agency in the world gives half a shit that someone gave their account info out. there's something to be said for natural selection and simple common sense. more than likely valve doesnt even care beyond fixing this individual customers complaint. do you know how many complaints they get about individuals, and how many of those valve doesnt act on? and why not? because unless they have logs of an issue going on they arent going to take one persons word over anothers. this is where common sense comes in again. and this "school" which could be the registrar for any number of reasons wont give a shit either.

i laugh a sad laugh though knowing that there are people in this thread that probably reported this to the fbi and the cia and interpol and how those emails are going to get utterly ignored.

no. they wont. social engineering is nothing new. the happenings on some forum are not enough to just out and ban on of their customers.

Um, if those "happenings" include other customers losing their accounts...yes it is :|
Its not the forum they care about, tis the fact someone is stealing accounts :rolling: which, by the way, is against the law. :x

hmm... yeah.

If this was real life we could become an angry mob and kick that guy's head in.

If this was real life, it'd be done already before anyone started talking about it.

I'm sure something will be done; Customers are important to Valve. Customers buy things and get them more money. If someone steals something from someone who paid money for something, it shouldn't matter if that happened online or offline, something's still being stolen that has been purchased.

Some forum?!?!?

Well, no doubt this cock sucker has tried it on other sites, this idiot went thread
crazy when he arrived, so he must of been desperate.

I have some bad news. Valve isn't going to have him arrested. All you can do is simply report your account stolen and it will be deleted.

But doesn't that mean it would delete the CD key? So you can just re-register the key?

Dunno, never had one stolen, I just stole them.

Could the police do anything about this? You guys are saying to contact the HK police, but all he did was fool a bunch of idiots. Is this really criminal?

i believe phishing is a crime in quite a few countries yes. That's why you see it in the news every now and then.

Have you read all this thead?

i wouldnt consider him a criminal...i think that the only major punishment that he could recieve from the school would be a suspension or expolltion, i dont think that he could get anything bad from the fuzz...but hey im no cop, so what do i know?

What does that have to do with anything. Oh, I get it. We're too geeky right? That this scam is something only clever computer nerds can detect, eh?

Or maybe it was a dumb and obvious trap that people wouldn't fall into if they were a bit more aware.

I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul 'cause I think i'm better 'n' you.

If Valve helps, you get a fiddle made of gold

If Valve says sorry, it's your job to protect you password, I get your soul

stop, please, your opinion means sooooo much to me. especially since your posts look like they were written by a monkey with an ethernet enabled abacus.

I have followed this forum and everything to do with Half-Life² and valve. And I strongly believe that they care about their legal paying customers so mutch that they want do do something about this punk, and the account of this guy who now got his account hijacked. Police is a bit to far fetched IMO but atleast trying to ban him from steam would be an option.

I mean look at it like this. You live in a house and someone knocks at your door, you open and he slips inside and holds a gun at your head and claiming the house is now his. You offcourse go to the police.. do you really think they would say, "well sorry sir, its you own fault for not putting chains on doors or installing measurments that can help you protect against stuf like this. So I am sorry sir, we can't do anything about it, its your own fault. buy yourself a new house or get over it."

C'mon!

they arent going to take the word of one customer over another. its your job (its stated in the EULA) to protect your password, not theirs to bail you out everytime you **** up.

hold the phone. no gun was pointed to his head, your analogy is bullshit

house - 500,000
game - 50

if someone points a gun at your head to enter your home its multiple felonies. if someone tricks you into giving out your password the victims crime is stupidity. there's some common sense involved with any password - dont give it out.

It's called phishing, which IS a crime. Small or big, it's still a crime, and I have read about people arrested for it before.

Dumb and obvious to you. How perfectly patronising of you.

Yup.....

Seriously, Fonaki, I figured you were quite young, but this just takes the goddamn cake. Sorry mate, you were owned. Hopefully Valve should be able to sort your shit out though <3 :)

Wouldn't it have been a lot easier to just pirate it :/

These accounts are worth around $20 each. I'm earning $100 a day by doing this.
