I'm wondering what the history behind people's usernames are. The Half-Life themed ones are obvious, but there's some obscure ones around too which intrigue me greatly. So this thread is simple really, how did you come up them?

Mine is simply my real life name translated. Great Blackthorn or Blackthorn is always the alias I use.

Well my real name is Zimbabwe Tony, but kids in grade school always laughed at me and nick named me Zombie Turtle because I was always sick with this genetic disease that made me look pale and walk very slow.

So I just stuck with it ever since.

My friend back in grade 9 suggested I make my player name Stigmata in Counter-Strike.

Then I tried making an Xbox Live account under the name Stigmata in late 2005, but it was taken. So I used the name generator, coupled with Google, to try to come up with a name that sounded good and was unique. Soup-something and something-Storm were two results, but they came up in Google. So I combined them, found that it returned zero results, and decided that would be my new name.

Lucid Assembly was the name of a song on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, when I first saw it I had no idea what the word meant... I just thought it sounded cool. :D

Since then I've learned its meaning and have had lucid dreams before, so I just shortened it a bit.
The x's are just for effect, I wish I could get rid of them on the forum now and just have my name as "Lucid". :(
But yeah. I used the name ever since I saw the movie and saw the words in the credits... I try to use it in everything I use now, usually hard since it's such a common word.

Another name I used to use was sup3rsnail, I completely forgot how I actually came up with the name but I used it in my elementary school years, along with b0untyhunt3r(was obsessed with Boba Fett.)

I recognise sup3rsnail from somewhere. Also you can PM a superMod like Pi to have your forum username changed.

PM Pi Mu Rho.

It's 'Kinaesthetic' expanded.

[edit] And also administrators (read: Pi or Munro) can change names or titles.

Correction: PM an admin like Pi, nobody else can change usernames.

Ennui is just a word I think looks and sounds cool, I don't claim to suffer from feelings of ennui but I like the concept (existential despair -> consuming apathy). I chose it back in 04. Before that on this site I was called Audiophile, not because I spend too much money on stereos (I thought it just meant music-lover when I came up with it). Before that, Cylleruion (my name, Chris, in Sindarin) and Chris-008. That's for this site, in terms of gaming handles or names on other forums I've had a lot although I've stuck to Ennui for many years now. Satyagraha, Gandhi's concept of suffering for what is right; Frood, which I use in CS:S, a Hitchhiker's Guide reference; selfdestruct, a NIN reference. The list goes on and on.

Well lessie...
My original name Inkheart449 was taken from the book Inkheart
A very good book imo
And my many others were similar
My current i just thought sounded cool >..>

Started off as Q_onfused; the underscore being the mouth of the "confused" face (Q_o). But I got rid of the underscore a couple years ago mostly because of people pronouncing it "Cue-un-fused."

Before that I was "Sorcerxo," which came from Sorcerer, but that was taken on Neopets (that's right, mother ****er). I through in an X 'cause I thought it was hardcore.

And then before that, I was TommyDreamer000.

Temporary derail - are the lines before your signature something like 'little houses on a hill'?

my friends used to call me that a really long time ago

they dont call me that now but i figured i should ude it here

I liked the stuff, and I figured it sounded better than naming myself after some other, more obvious substance.

Besides, my previous one was getting kind of old. Monkeyblimp? WTF?

I've had a couple.

Favorites are Django, Buddy Christ, and Droog.

I can tell you exactly how I got my name.

The first part - Virus

Comes from my obsession with sickness, death, and the undead. I just think this shit and anything resembling it is fascinating. For example, a graveyard. This is home to me, where I feel comfortable. I want to live there. And one day I shall.

and also great respect for viruses as they are tough little bastards.

I am very germ conscious and avoid surfaces, air, and human contact with people who are sick or diseased.

The second part is from Archetype:
(web defentions) said:
# Primary structural elements of the human psychic.

# The original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies; a perfect example.

# A term used to describe universal symbols that evoke deep and sometimes unconscious responses in a reader. In literature, characters, images, and themes that symbolically embody universal meanings and basic human experiences, regardless of when or where they live, are considered archetypes. ...

anyway, that's where I got type

Plus I type like a demon at about 65 words per minute, so I thought it suits me.

Often you can't use spaces in your name when using a computer so I combined them

VirusType

then I thought it needed to define the VirusType was. What type is it? Well, it was D when I played Call of Duty 1 or 2. Because I thought it sounded cool.

VirusTypeD

But then it seemed too much like Typed, and that was bugging me.

So I pulled the 2 from Half-Life2 when I joined here.

VirusType2

Unknowingly, I ended up with what is used to describe sexually transmitted diseases:

I've forgotten all my previous screen names except this one.

Name would be better if it was Abe Synth.

I stole mine from some guy I played Ultima Online with. I just thought it was a cool name, and didnt know it was from a book series that sucked.

Ive had brief stints with other names as well. Such as Turkeyslapper, General Pershing, Sh0nm4n, and raptorJesus.

I like shamrocks and clovers and the Irish culture a lot. That's about it. I'm not even Irish.

I like to describe myself as crazy and/or delusional. So delusional seemed fitting.

I spelled Kamikaze wrong because when I tried to join here for the first time the right spelling was taken, and I hate adding numbers to any kind of name so I just added the "i"

My xfire, suicidalpacifist, described my playing type when I played online games such as BF2, HL2DM and such. Being suicidal while being a pacifist.

And my xbox live, PhantomDarkness, was made because Kamikazie was taken. So I did sort of the same thing that Stigmata did, used Google to my advantage.

My father used Highlander when he played online games, I just adopted it after he stopped playing :)

I was Yasprat when I first started going online. I don't remember why. I think I used a random name generator and that was something I could remember easily.

Jintor comes from the name of some Pandaren Brewmaster in War3, it was one of the possible names. It's just Jinto Reedwine, a name which I also used after I finished using Yasprat (which turned into Yazaa). When I came here, I just shortened it to Jintor.

I use Mul on Deviantart, which is just my name backwards.

Internet cafe, CS 1.0, choose handle, decide on 'The Incredible Sulk', 1 year later, want email address, '[email protected]' taken, 'incrediblesulk' too long, add surname to internet handle, username is unique, [email protected] established, name spreads to other realms, Sulkdodds is born.

Trigger_Happy - Started on my first every play of CS, I was like...10 or something. Was very trigger happy earlier that day when we went paintballing so..it kinda made sense?

Pureball - Read it in a PCGamer mag I think

Anathema - Used in EVE Online, cant remember where I got it from. Something about being banished comes to mind though.

Dynasty - World famous Pro Paintball team, stole the name basically. That was about 4 years ago, is now my main alias for everything.

Mine is my own name but i've been a user of IRC for a decade and a half hence the brackets as Matt is usually taken when i log onto a network.
