Virginia Tech Shooting

Yeah it's really not that far from where I am, I have a friend there. He was lucky he didn't go to class this morning. It's really horrible.

reports are coming out that the kid was asian...just wait for a racist backlash.

This sucks.

Its only racist if they are black or middle eastern.

wow an asian mass murderer? chairmen Mao would be most proud

america, sooner or later you're goin gto have to do something about easy access to guns ..when's the last time there was a headline that read "Student stabs 23 people at local college"?

****ing horrible.

21 dead... Good God. :|

Only about 8 months ago. And it was actually at a middle school, but only 8 people.

Theres more wrong in America than easy gun access. Our society and every facet of our lifestyle needs a do-over.

one example out of dozens ..and regardless if you have social ills to take care of you still have to deal with the amount of gun violence in america

The homicide rate for children in the United States was five times higher than that for children in the other 25 countries combined

A firearm was reported to have been involved in the deaths of 1107 children; 957 (86%) of those occurred in the United States. Of all firearm-related deaths, 55% were reported as homicides; 20%, as suicides; 22%, as unintentional; and 3%, as intention undetermined. The overall firearm-related death rate among U.S. children aged less than 15 years was nearly 12 times higher than among children in the other 25 countries combined

that says a lot doesnt it?

I'm not american, but I get a bit narked by all this anti-gun stuff that gets wheeled out whenever someone gets shot. Making guns illegal stops law abiding citizens carrying them, people who break the law, by defenition, will ignoe said law.

And before you start going on about restricting access making things like this less likley, I can drive into london right now, and drive out with a 9mm inside a day. And I don't know anyone who has anything to do with guns. I doubt any major city in the world is different.

Here in the UK, gun crime is prevalent (We had a spate of shootings a few weeks back) and hand guns are completly outlawed over here. Simple fact is, the sort of people who would use guns like this would still have them, and law abiding citizens are unable to defend themselves.

Ick...just heard. Had a close friend who went to Tech and she is really upset by this (of course). Man, I agree that we may need to look into changing that bit in the Constitution...just a little. :|

Someone desperate enough to shoot 50 people is desperate enough to obtain a handgun illegally.

Handguns are generally banned on campuses anyway, this kid had no regard for rules.

Blame the criminal, not the tool.

ban schools and colleges.

That way we won't have any more school/campus shootings, because we won't have any schools or colleges! :D!

Give everyone in america a gun and shit like this doesn't happen.

About 3 people were shot in separate isolated incidents.

yes because only criminals with long rap sheets commit mass murder ..no one has ever gone on a shooting spree who wasnt a criminal to begin with ..oh and saying that making guns illegal will just take away from law abiding citizens is just wishful thinking propegated by the gun industry (fear is a great motivator) ..it seems to have worked in pretty much every country that has some sort of restriction, why couldnt it work in the US?

yet there's far less firearm related murders in london than any other comparable american city ..hmmm I wonder why? oh in most of these mass murder cases the perp got his guns legally

isnt that already the reality in your neck of the woods? are people dying in droves because they are unable to defend themselves against gun weilding maniacs? oh and a good percentage of guns used in crime are stolen from legit owners ..so if they were to completely ban all guns sooner or later access to guns would pretty much dry up as only the most hardened criminals would be able to get them

oh this always comes up when there's a mass murder because of obvious reasons ..if he didnt have access to guns 23 people would still be alive

About 3 people were shot in separate isolated incidents.

Let's see, in the area where I live, in the past 2 months we've had 3 people shot in 3 separate incidents. Guess which area has fewer gun regulations, mine or yours?

The difference between the UK and US is that in the UK, only criminals have guns. And that's a great idea.

Aren't there somewhat more pressing concerns here than a racist backlash...?

If staff were required to be armed on site, you'd never hear of school shootings either - and you wouldn't have to destroy the entire American concept of self-determination to solve the problem.
Schools are easy targets precisely BECAUSE the hippie moron crowd have decided it's best to keep guns out of them.

Asian? I bet either Starcraft or WoW gets blamed.

It's a terrible idea. You also didn't mention the circumstances of the above shootings, which makes the statistics meaningless.

Why not discuss the events and people involved and keep the pro/anti gun stuff out of this thread. It seems more sensible to start (yet another) discussion in politics about gun control than to consign this thread to inevitable derailment and/or lockage.

Sarcasm mate, it's your friend. They were personal disputes of some kind.

What I don't understand is why they just cowered in their dorm rooms waiting for this guy to pop in and shoot them. After the, I dunno, 3rd shot? maybe someone should have rushed him. Sitting there and praying he doesn't shoot you does nothing.

Man this would never happen in France. If it would ever come close, they could only get their hands on a hunting rifle.

Sarcasm mate, it's your friend. They were personal disputes of some kind.

Oh, sorry.
Well, if they were personal disputes they were personal problems, not government problems. Not just cause to bring in anti-gun legislation.

I've forgotten what it's called, but we studied this in psychology. The more people present in a situation, the less any one individual feels compelled to act. Which explains why three men with knives can commandeer an entire jumbo jet, and someone can get raped and murdered in broad daylight.

Ugh, we went all over this many times and the conclusion is usually:

Legalizing guns isn't a good idea, but because they're already legal and widespread in the US, criminalizing them would only cause further harm. If you could turn it all back, guns should have been strictly controlled, but now it's far too late for that.

There, dicsussion over.

I don't agree with your conclusion. A bad society always blames its tools.
Guns are as readily available in Switzerland as they are in the USA, go and look at their crime stats.

Either you're made of titanium or incredibly stupid.

OT, sounds pretty horrific. Anyone know the motives of the gun man yet?

Either you're made of titanium or incredibly stupid.
What's more stupid:

A. Cowering and allowing this guy to walk around campus for TWO HOURS (the shootings were at 7:15 and 9:30)
B. Trying to disarm him any way possible, even if you risk your own life.
Sometimes you have to forget about your own personal safety for the greater good.

34, apparently.

And repiV, I never said that the society didn't have any blame and that it's all the guns' fault, but you're sure as hell making it a lot easier.

Because you're gonna be a great rational thinker in a situation like that, eh?

Diffusion of responsibility

Like it hasn't happened before

The span of time between the shootings in the dorms and the shootings in the classroom should be enough for some rational thought to kick in.
