Vista more secure

What I might do, is buy Vista when I build my new PC. I'll have to get a new motherboard, RAM, CPU, and eventually a new DX10 GPU.

That's a lot of money combined, I better start saving.

I get 1 week paid vacation in about a month. :D

So many things I could buy... new turbo, new stuff. But my PC is pretty much my main hub, and I spend most of my time in front of it. I have some time to think about it.

I hope Vista gets up to speed with the games and drivers in the mean time. I won't be buying another copy of XP OS. I'm using my OEM XP for all it's worth, then I'm moving on, since I hear that this copy of OEM XP is tied to my motherboard, so If I replace the mobo, XP won't work. Some licensing deal with MS and emachines to keep the price down for eMachines.

haha
Of course you aren't and neither am I. ;)

Nor am I.

I'm running it though, and activated ;)

Not like that's much of an accomplishment though, but my friend paid $170 Canadian for Windows Vista Home Premium. I almost cried when he told me that.

It is. I have an OEM copy of XP, and I found this out the hard way when I decided to flash my BIOS, and Windows decided that a new BIOS means a new motherboard. I called MS support, got some guy in India, and successfully convinced him after half an hour that my motherboard hadn't changed. So I got a second activation key \o/

I'm sure you could pull off the same thing :p

I'm using my unlimited volume license key. No activation, no bullshit.

I will probably be getting Vista when I build my next machine. Which might be around Janurary next year. Hopefully by then all drivers will be more optimised and things will work properly :)

I'm getting Vista when DX10 actually appears in the gaming world and i actually have a DX10 card to make use of it ! I like the look of it and all, but not worth the money until it becomes more of a necessity rather than just a desirable.

Well I had Vista, and I can say that every game was a lot slower! :( On EP1,on XP was going with 50-60fps on 1024*768, and on Vista on that resolution, with only 15 or 20...not to mention the system is hell slow :flame:

Well, it's brand new software, and is built for the future.

You should have turned off Aero, for starters, if your PC wasn't up to the task.

About game performance: That sucks really bad. So what is the deal, is it only good at DX10? Or is it just bad for games over all? Do you really think they can make up that much difference? I thought Vista was supposed to be better for games!

This is depressing.

Ive been using vista since its release, I wouldnt reccomend anyone get it, it still has issues, and some hardware isnt even supported anymore. Lets not get started about drivers. Going from xp to vista is at the moment like going one step backwards, so do yourself a favor and don't unless you just gotta have it now, kinda like me :p

Yeah, I forget to mention about the shitty compatibility, not only for drivers...programs, games :( Even if i have a highly Vista-capable PC, I would still use XP...oh,and the new Service Pack 3 will be realesed, so it should be a lot better than Vista ;)

The only game-performance problems in Vista are from drivers. Other than that, Vista should improve games performance overall simply due to the strict driver module.

I'll probably get Vista when I build my new computer and SP1 is out. Given that that will be a while away I'm hoping most of the driver & performance issues will be resolved by then.

What issues ? And what hardware has driver problems ?

I've read articles about some dev team bringing dx10 to xp, so I might never buy vista.

Results basically consist of Nvidia (Fine for a lot of people), Creative (Creative just suck) and a bunch of sites saying there are driver problems but not actually talking about actual problems.

Now, what are the driver problems and what are these 'issues' ?

While it sounds good, I don't think it will be practical. From what I've read they can't get it to even run yet. And from what I understand (I'm not a programmer) he's trying to translate each dx10 feature to dx9 and use the cpu for the calculations. That might pose a problem for most machines.

It also looks like MS knows Vista is a failure at the moment, because I could've sworn they previously stated they would support XP until 2010. I see now they are dropping support in 08 (I believe January). Must be desperate for Vista sales.

Strange. I never had a problem getting my OEM XP reactivated. 5min or less on the phone and it's done. I've used the same copy (not at the same time) on about 8 motherboard changes, a few cpu upgrades and a few completely different machines. Must be a new breed of DIY'ers because up until recently I never heard of DIY'ers thinking they need retail versions because they couldn't use their OEM versions if they upgraded components.

All activation is is a formality. On the phone they ask why you're reinstalling. I've given them excuses from Jesus was using my computer to look at porn to aliens came down and fried my HDD.

How the hell does that mean they 'know' it's a failure and do you have any other reason for saying they known Vista is a failure ?

Besides, I don't think you quite know what you're talking about. I'm assuming you're thinking about the torrent of stories about how Microsoft wouldn't be selling XP licenses next year but:

- It's following the normal lifecycle
- Licenses will still be sold till 09
- XP will be supported for another.. 7 years (2 mainstream + 5 extended since new version) or so

And the other reason I assume you don't know what you're talking about is that you say they're going to drop support in 08 instead of 10, but even dropping support in 2010 would be somewhat ridiculous.

Or, maybe you are somehow right, so -- links ?

Vista isn't a failure, MS profits went up ~65% after the release of Vista. It's selling very well.

There is a big problem with piracy especially in China, Russia, and other Nations, else sales would be higher.

Microsoft is going to increase Windows genuine advantage development this year, to try to stomp this out. This could be annoying for people who bought the software though. Hopefully they don't do anything intrusive. I remember them being sued over it before.

Then theres people like me, that want it, but aren't going to buy it until it's well established. Windows XP is perfect for me.
