Vortigaunt skeleton in Portal

i found this notes.

The last one shows a vortigaunt skeleton, wich means that Portal happens after the black mesa incident.

Interesting find man. Though, it is possible that it could have happened before. They could have entered Xen and captured a Vortigaunt by mistake during a test or something.

Actually, it looks more like a chicken to me. A ****ed up chicken.

I saw that too, but I didn't get vortigaunt from that skeleton - I figured it was something else by looking at the neck, the stature of the torso, and the arms.

I think Ostrich or Emu...

Perhaps they're easter-eggs? I thought Kliener invented the Mk. 5 suit.

Yeah. But Isn't the Mk. 5 in HL2 and Mk. 4 in HL1? So if the clipboard is of the Mk. 5, then it has to take place after the events of HL1.

I don't think we're supposed to assume that it's Klieners invention. Although I guess it's more information for the timeline nuts that want to work out where Portal is within the HL2 line.

Well, the HEV isn't exclusive to Black Mesa, I don't believe.

If somebody can find a source that proves me wrong however, I'll eat my hat.

Well Vortigaunt's do have long necks don't they? They're just curved up all the time. And I think I see a third arm on its chest, sort of hanging down. Not sure why they'd be testing a chicken, exactly. Seems rather silly.

According to the Hazard Course Timetable (Gearbox canon) the HEV MK V prototype was being tested in Black Mesa the day before Gordon's suit training. Also, Gina Cross (Again, this is Gearbox canon), a Black Mesa scientist, designed the HEV suit.

Funny how that clipboard has the exact same notes scribled on it as Kleiner had :p

Yeah. I noticed the same thing as well. The clipboard Kleiner drops to the ground in HL2 is identical. :)

I'm surprised that there still is so much discussion about the timeline of Portal. It seems pretty simple to figure out.

Aperture Science canon 1960-1996 can be found on the aperturescience.com website.

Pre-1975: Shower curtains

1979: CEO Meltdown and the 3 Tier business model

1980's: Significant setbacks as they implement the 3 tier model. Initiation of the company wide computer system, GLaDOS.

1990's: Tier I and Tier II fail miserably. Tier 3 makes progress, and they begin to invest GLaDOS on working on the project.

1996: GLaDOS has significant upgrades.
GLaDOS becomes self-aware, on Bring-your-daughter-to-work-day.
GLaDOS attempts to kill all people in the Aperture Science facility. Scientists quickly assemble and install a poorly constructed morality core, in order to prevent further homicidal actions. This module damages GLaDOS.

1996-2000: Unknown event occurs that forces the members of Aperture Science to abandon the facility with Bring-Your-Daughters still inside. It might be the neurotoxin attempt combined with the portal storms within a short period that cause the abandonment of the facility.

1997: Black Mesa Incident and subsequent portal storms. Aperture Science ceases to exist as a corporation.

Post-7 Hour War: Abandoned by humans, yet defended by sentries and GLaDOS, the Combine leave the facility intact. GLaDOS continues to work in isolation on the projects in her programming, namely Tier 3.

20 years later: (Episode 2 timeframe): the "daughters" are now fully grown women, and being forced by GLaDOS to test the Handheld Portal Device.

Therefore, Portal must occur simultaneously with Episode 2. Any references to the 80's or 90's is due to the fact the facility was abandoned.

Clipboard 1: #234 is Chell btw. It's on her pod at the beginning of the game.

Clipboard 2: HEV Vs were supposedly in development in the HL1 era, at least according to Half-Life Decay.

Clipboard 3: I feel like Vorti-Tonight, like Vorti-Tonight.

One of the reasons that some players find the timeline less simple is that the website actually appears to be an easter egg, not actually to be taken seriously. Add to that the fact that previously Valve have said that if it doesn't appear in game then it's not firm material.

Half-Life 1 takes place in 200-, and anyone who takes the AP website as canon needs to question their own sanity.

That website makes about as much sense as the rest of Apeture's stuff, so I'm taking it as canon.

Little in the game comes from a reliable source itself. Just because it's on an equal footing of nonsense, doesn't mean you should take it as fact. Not that I can honestly see all that much in Portal that is quite in the same league as C Johnson 'manufacturing seven deadly shower curtains to be given as gifts to each member of the House Naval Appropriations committee'.

No necessarily.

The scientists of Black Mesa had travelled to Xen before the incident and are bound have studied Vortigaunts before.

That is one of the most sensicle parts of the site. He did it for revenge because they were the only part of the military that didn't use Aperture shower curtains. Well, when I say it makes sense, Johnson was obviously a bit loopy in the first place.

Unless Kleiner worked for Aperture Science for a period of time. What if Episode 3's twist is he still has allegiances to Aperture?

It goes to show just how farcical the whole site is if you say that bit is 'sensible'. The whole thing is just a vehicle for some dry humour. I mean 'Heimlich Countermanoeuvre', 'Take-a-Wish Foundation' and Johnson being under the impression that time was flowing backwards...?

Twas a joke.

It would certainly explain alot. Think about it, he seems to be operating on a wing and a prayer. We're scratching around for clues but don't really have a clucking idea. Lamar was debeaked. And Alyx says the GMan tastes like chicken. It's all a fowl conspiracy.

The entire facility is one big joke. GLaDOS's crazy lines, the weighted companion cube (<3), the happy gun turrets that don't hate you. :p

And before anyone brings it up, I know sensicle isn't really a word. I typed that post very quickly and didn't bother to proof-read it, as I do with most posts. I have no idea where the word came from.

Much of the humour comes from the GlaDOS speaking nonsense, or lying, or using reverse psychology on you. If a load of jokey nonsense on the AS.com site was the truth, it would be a first for the Portal game world.

Portal is a bit of an unknown beast. With the HL world stuff in-game trumps out of game stuff. Everything in Portal could well be a load of rubbish though and there's no way to be sure until Ep3 hits (I don't think). The site though does appear to just be an easter egg.

Dear,
XenDance

Xendance. Combine have issued you to report back to city 16. You have let out classified information. You may come peacfully or we may use more... convincing ways :sniper:

GLaDOS: I am sOrry ChIcken yOu have FAILED the TaSk.
FSSSSAAP! BOOM!! BAWK!!

I think a much more logical explanation for the third picture is that it is a diagram of an android. We know that AS was testing them due to the misconfigured test chamber. It looks nothing like a Vort.
