What A Mess! New Orleans!

Looks like god is owning our assses.

Or perhaps this is a natural occurance caused by certain weather patterns in the mid-atlantic, without any influence from any sort of diety. Meh, who's to say though.

"New Orleans' homeland security chief, Terry Ebbert, said looters were breaking into stores all over town and stealing guns. He said there are gangs of armed men moving around the city.

The Times-Picayune newspaper reported that the gun section at a new Wal-Mart in the Lower Garden District had been cleaned out by looters.

Gunshots were heard throughout the night in Carrollton.

Police spokesman Marlon Defilo said an officer and a looter were wounded in a shootout. Defilo had no word on their condition. Three or four others were also arrested, he said.

One looter shot and wounded a fellow looter, who was taken to a hospital and survived."

What a wonderful world we live in. Hey our city just got demolished and hundreds of people just died. Let's get some guns and shoot people.

Looks like the hurricane took the lives of the wrong people.

I'm from Baton Rouge, and it's insane here. There's gotta be 75,000 refugees here.

The thread about the worst disaster in American history is a lousy three pages long?!?

The thread about the London bombing got to three pages in about the first 5 minutes.

Very interesting.

EDIT: God Bless NO. I gave $50 to the red cross on my way home from work today. Not much I know but meh, I'm poor.

Yea, I find it funny no other country is helping us out with aid or resources...yet we always help others countries with aid and resources when they have disasters.

Well...one country is helping and that is Venezuela.

I don't think people care about the Americans. Don't forget these boards have an impossibly large percentage of brits.

I've hardly seen anything at all about this disaster on the news here. There's been a bit on it tonight, but not as much as I expected

I guess people feel deep down inside, americans had it coming...
I hate when peopel compare this Katrina ting to Tsunami.. theres a big difference in my opinion. THE people new about katrina well in advance, and after the results of the disaster no one is donating 4billion dollars for repair or what not... people could careless it seems. doesnt bother me just a life lesson. I bet this is somewhere in Nicolo Machiavellis the prince.

I agree and don't understand why we care so much about everyone else.

This is just crazy. New Orleans...a place I've been to so many times with so many people...

I have tons of friends down there, I don't know if they're all right or not.

The city is more or less gone.

This is unbelieveable.

just because people dont talk about it on these boards, doesnt make us unsympathetic

i really feel for those people who had to go thru hurricane katrina

I think the reason the London Bombing got so much attention was just the whole, "OH NO! Terrorists!" mindset. A natural disaster isn't going to turn around with a nuke in one hand and a jihad in the other. It's the whole fear of the unknown complex, methinks.

The New Orleans disaster is probably more serious, but it's merely tragic, not frightening. (Unless, of course, you live in one of the few coastal Gulf states like me.)

No one that I've seen so far has compared Katrina to the tsunamis last year. Then again people compared the London Bombings to 911, which is the same type of thing, it's just not on the same level. Every country has its crisis, and while America is always standing by and giving support to the other countries, look who stands alone when disaster strikes their own land.

Had it coming? What in the hell? It was a hurricane/natural occurance, that killed people in a thing totally unrelated to any politics. The hell with that bullshit.

The people who did leave still have lost nearly everything. Still haven't heard from my aunt/cousins.

I hope you hear from your family, RT...I understand what you're going through. Do you have any idea where they evacuated to? It's almost impossible to get a line on your cell phone here in BR, so...

Yeah, I actually saw that one live. It's horrible.

when i said american had it coming, I did not mean it from my perspective i totally disagree but if you ask someone else ( middle eastern maybe ) theyll probably think oh ya america had it coming with them invading iraq such such pish posh. i agree it shouldnt be on the political level but sadly some things just are.. hopefully everything will be ok and we can learn from this

Anybody know where I can see pics of what parts of New Orleans is flooded?Like a diagram or something...not "actual" pictures of areas flooded.

Never build a city below sea level on the coast. In all honesty, the reason the city survived so long from it's time of creation is only sheer luck. It only took one storm strong enough to hit just right and now it's flooded like a bowl (which it essentially is, the geography is literally a bowl filled with water now)

On the news they said New Orleans was actually lucky, because if they eye would've passed right over them the situation would've been a catastrophe.

Yep. Also a puff of warm air from the midwest hit the hurricane before it hit land, actually decreasing the initial effects. Things could've been a bit worse.. but it's still pretty hard to call anything lucky.

do you think we will ever beat hurricanes?

you know construct buildings that can sat 99% healthy afterwards....?

and earthquakes.

I think there is some platform some dude developed that had the "potential" of undoing hurricanes. i twaslike a float with jet liner engines facing upwards... bestway I can describe it. but i think if we stop hurricanes there will probably be some environmental effects that we cannot foresee.

I'm willing to bet it wasn't below sea level when they started building it in the 1600s

When they decided to build New Orleans it was above sea level, unfortunately for them they where building on alot of silt. When that silt settled the whole city sank. The levies they constructed where no more than a false security, only able to withstand a catagorey 3 I believe. Most of the people who stayed where either too poor to make it out, most of the people looting for tv's and the like are these same people, or thought they could ride out this one like the last.

Ya. No kidding. To make matters worse is that the city is below sea level, which sucks. :(

Get a map of New Orleans, draw a line parallel to the coast 4/5ths of the way through the city inland. That's all flooded.

This is so sad. There are literally thousands of posts on the new orleans craigs list of people seeking missing loved ones:

http://neworleans.craigslist.org/laf/

This is a catastophre of proportions never before seen in the United States.

Hate to say it but historically speaking after disasters of this magnitude the city that was hit usually ends up being abandoned. This truly was a disaster that had it occured around the time that the old testament was being put together we would be reading about it as something related to Noah's ark. This really is a disaster of epic porportions.

/me begins waiting for the movie.

No you won't, its too important of an area. Just saying what I did to help put into perspective just what happened.

really important...especially around late february, early march...

I'm getting reallly worried, ya'll. People are starting to loot stores here, in Baton Rouge! It's not gonna be pretty...

Yeah, but not everyone had the means to leave. Notice how a large number of the refugees in New Orleans are poor ppl. Maybe they didn't have a car to get away, or the money to take a bus. It seems the poor were forgotten by the emergency planners.
