What did Sony do right with the PS3 launch?

With all the criticism flying around about sony's new console, I was wondering if anyone had any positive points on the launch. I for one thought that their continuing support of the PS2 was a brillant idea. They didn't just leave it for dead as Nintendo and Microsoft did, but continued to put exclusive titles on it. (Eg. GOW II, Burnout dominator)

Their Cell Processor seems interesting and possibly very rewarding.

After 10 minutes or so thinking of a response, all I came up with is this: -

Sony didn't come into my house on christmas day and piss on my kids.

They have tons of units at my local best buy, walmart, target...etc. :D

Yay! Brick got his old avatar back!

They released it in America and Japan on the right date...but not Europe.

Unlike any other console launch I can remember, except the Wii (though that's simpler hardware), there were no major defects or complications with the units. There haven't been widespread reports of disc scratching, readers dying, or "red circles of death". The online service right out of the box worked perfectly fine. They've continually updated the firmware. There are lots of demos/games available for download.

The only things they messed up were marketing and not having enough units at first. Also, there was only one launch title worth buying (Resistance), but the same goes for the Wii and I can't think of any 360 launch titles that were worth buying (except maybe Perfect Dark Zero).

PDZ makes my imagination degrade like pissing on a camp fire as it slowly flickers away.

Most Generic Shooter EVER!

It hasn't been released in Europe yet. I'd say that's pretty bad.

Errrmmmm.............erm.......oh wait a minute, i know - it's cheap.....dammit

nope, i got nothing.

They didn't pay people to kill each other. I guess that's a kind of good thing.

TP was released for gamecube:angel:

You're serious? It's the Cell Processor that screwed them.
Nah, its the Blu-Ray more than anything that has bitten them in the pants. It has added HUGE costs to the system, but they did want to make it future-proof, so it makes sense in that respect I suppose, but not that many people care about it that much to spend so much on it right now.

It may turn out to be a really good decision in the long run, but its way too early to tell at this point.

As far as I am concerned, the PS3 launch has been just as uninspired and boring as the 360 launch was a year ago. No seriously must-have titles and a big price (much bigger in Sony's case). Wii at least has TP which IS a seriously must-have title....

???

Can't you play NES, Super Nintendo, N64 and Gamecube games on the Wii? I may have misunderstood the point being made here though.

I think he means that Sony are still making PS2 games, while Nintendo and Microsoft have stopped making Gamecube and Xbox games, respectivly.

Gotcha, that makes much more sense. Didn't realize Sony was going to continue making PS2 games.

The consoles didn't blow up and ensue an apocalyptic armageddon.

Sony shit all over its customers up until the point of realease. The only thing that could of saved them was if the ps3 came with a free bj.

umm they still make games for both of those systems. i believe he meant by "support" meaning that you can play a last generation game on the newer generation system.

I can't think of any good titles that will be coming to the xbox or gamecube, or any at all for that matter. Although I'll give props to nintendo for releasing twilight princess on the cube for one final hur-ah.

Um... they didn't incite massive citywide riots?

*shrug*

They didn't totally ruin Brian Eno's "An Ending".

Oh, wait.

They released a game that featured Giant Enemy Crabs.

.. and real time weapon switching, I mean, how can you go wrong ?

They are still making PS2 games, which cements the fact that I dont need a PS3.

They caused loads of memes and internet sayings such as "599 dollars" and "giant enemy crab" when they went and embarrassed themselves at E3

They have produced a system that on the whole doesn't look half bad.

They got everything else wrong

IMO, Sony making their launch date was the only thing they did right.

I could spend $600 on a PS3...for essentially nothing. OR, I could spend nothing and continue using my GameCube and PS2 with a WEALTH of terrificly outstanding games.

Also, using Blu-ray is not a mistake...it's necessary when you consider the size of some of these game. I hear Resistance requires massive amounts of storage. The mistake is not releasing a version of the PS3without Blu Ray movie playback. The margins on current Blu-Ray movie players is massive. Do you honestly believe that the margin is slim on a $1000.00 Sony Blu-Ray player. Not to mention, if you don't have an HDMI compatible receiver...the Blu-Ray movie experience is crippled on this thing. The HD sound formats are outstanding and there's no way to hear them through the TOS-Link connection. I guarantee that the movie playback is a HUGE part of their justification for a $600 price tag. Just my two cents.

My suggestion would be 3 versions...$399 for a Blu-Ray movie disabled one, $599 (same as the current one for $599) and $899 for a TRUE media center/PS3 with larger HD, Blu Ray movie playback, TIVO-like software (potential cable box replacement), and analog sound-out to output the HD sound formats. My interest would certainly be higher than it is now. This is all correctable, in my eyes, and if sales keep going the way they have...less than impressive...something similar may happen.
