Who Upgraded for HL2?

I upgraded, well, had to build my own pc, but i went for a HL2 pc..
Abit NF7
128mb Sapphire 9800 pro
Gig Crucial DDR400 RAM
Sony 17" tft
AMD Athlon 3200+

I'm upgrading to a Gig of DDR RAM, and a Radeon 9800 PRO. I don't really need any thing else ...

AMD Athlon 2600+
512Mb RAM
80Gb 7200RPM HDD
4.1 Surround Sound
GeForce 4 Ti4200 (soon to be 9800pro)

I'm waiting for HL2 with quiet confidence.

I got a new "Power color x800 pro", not really for HL2 but i needed a new card. However tyhe release of HL2 did spur me on a bit. However the new card meant i had to get a new Mobo so i got the Gigabyte 7npro 2 i think it's called. Got me some new zalman surround headphones aswell.

I work part time while i study for my masters and the job i'm in pays me a shit load to do nothing.... i hope they don't clock on to what they are paying me.

I upgraded my comp after I heard about hl2, but I did'nt do it for hl2 itself, it needed an upgrade.

Amen bro. People get jealous. It's human nature. I'm not cocky though, I'm very grateful to have been able to order such a machine at 21 years old. Definitely glad I went with AW. Especially with their 16 phase pc purchase list, and a 200 pt checklist before shipping the system out. These guys mean business. I won't regret for 1 minute ordering that machine. I respect the guys who build there machines, I wont rag on them. They should NOT rag on me. I don't have the time to put together my own, and I have some good ol flowing American greenery right now. So I splurged. :)

why does it do that it stops at like 60 fps your right ,why..... do you know

Even anything over 65fps is not needed. The human eye can only see up to 30fps, but then factor in refresh rates and you can probably get the human eye to take in about 65fps. The human eye however can not see the difference between 65fps and 70. So it's pointless.

Rich parents?

Of course I dont speak for myself there...Im old enough to BE a parent!! :frog: Luckily, I don't have any spoiled brat kids to buy computer parts for ...ha!

Let me give you the run down. Timeline style.

2001 Graduate Highschool
2001 Decided not to go to a traditional college
Couldnt bare sitting behind a desk anymore
2003Went to Branford Hall
Entered the IT program
Did excellent, since I've loved computers since 96
2004Got into an amazing internship program at BAE systems
They liked my work so much as an intern, they hired me full time
Now Im getting paid to work with computers
My title is Information Systems Specialist / Web Designer /
All at the age of 21.

It's a good start. I'm very happy with how things went. Im already in a career at 21. Kids who graduated 2 years ahead of me in highschool, are still finishing college. So NO, I don't have rich parents. We're easily middle class. Thats how I afforded mine.

I have never upgraded a computer for a game or two or three and never will. Just don't have the cash to do that and it seems a bit of a waste when I have more important things to spend money on.

But I did upgrade this year simply because my computer was a Duron 700 with 192meg with a 6 gig hard drive. ;) so it was time.

I didn't get it solely for HL2. But it was a big influence. Muwahaha :E

Oh, the irony. I remember last year, when HL2 got delayed... and people on this forum were laughing at those people who had upgraded just for the game. Do bear in mind that if HL2 gets delayed, even by a couple of months, your machine will likely be available at a significantly lower price, and new, faster technology will be available.

Then I guess no one should ever upgrade machines because OH DAMN, there gonna be stale in 2 months! 2 MONTHS!? Maybe new technology will come out yes, but my machine will not be obsolete in 2 months! Lol. Don't kid yourself. Buying, owning, and maintaining computers to be on the front wave of technology is like modding a car. If you don't have the finances to do it, don't get involved.

Lol, I hate this thread. It makes me feel like my computer is a POS.

Hah.

Microsoft Windows ME
384 RAM (got 100 RAM from some guy for five dollars)
Pentium 3 -- 1 GHZ Processor
GeForce 2 GTS

Right now, I'm not upgrading anything, and hoping like hell that I can run Hl2. I have 7,000 dollars, but I'm going to college, and I can't spend it -- especially since I already wasted the grand I made this summer on alcohol and other frivolous things. If I REALLY can't play it, I might buy a Geforce 3. How much do they go for now?

upgraded last september to athlon xp 3200, 9800XT

upgraded again last week to Athlon64 3400, x800XT it better come out this time or ill be superpissed

Alot of people will be super pissed. They didnt even give us a date yet, and I still feel more confident about it coming out soon , than I did LAST september.

I think I overdid it a little...

so, are you the son of bill gates?

ummm... really, i'm just curious. man... you gotta be friggin rich... :D

Thanks man,I have money but not daddys and mommys I have my own bank accounts, I just finished grad school with a degree in business admin. This all is kinda a grad present from the grandparents!

Right now I have

Athlon XP3000+ @ 2.3 ghz
512 mb kingston pc2700
ASUS a7n8x V2.0
Radeon 9800pro
Audigy 2 zs

I'm for sure goin to upgrade RAM no matter what, I'm going towards 1 gig corsair 3200

I'll see how HL2 runs on that before I decide if I want to upgrade

edit: oh yeah that reminds me, I'm probably going to get a nice big monitor like that too ;]. I wanna finally be able to play my games at 16x12. I'll have a new job by then of course so money shouldn't be too much of a problem...

Since 1998 Half Life was my life. Dedicated much time to the game itself, the mods, it's community. To me it was more than a game. It was a lifestyle. Something only I could never get my friends to understand. They just couldnt see it. But I connected with HL. The game ran beautifully on my 1.8 mhz Voodoo 3, 128mb ram system. So I won't play HL2 on anything but the best. I decided to get a little self indulgent yesterday at work. I ordered a new Alienware.

Heres the specs.

Chassis: Alienware® Full-Tower Case (480-Watt PS) - Saucer Silver
Power Supply: No Power Supply Upgrade
Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor w/ HT Technology 2.8GHz
Motherboard: ASUS® P4C800-E Deluxe - Intel 875P Motherboard
Memory: 1GB Dual Channel DDR PC-3200 SDRAM at 400MHz - 2 x 512MB
Video Card: ATI RADEON™ X800 XT Platinum Edition 256MB DDR3 w/Digital and TV Out
System Drive: High Performance - Serial ATA - 80GB Seagate® Barracuda 7,200 RPM w/8MB Cache
Optical Drive One: Lite-On® 16x DVD-ROM Drive with Software DVD Decoder
Floppy Drive: 3.5" 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive - Black
Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster® Audigy® 2 High Definition 6.1 Surround
Network Connection: Integrated High Performance Intel® Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2
Display One: NEC 17" LCD 1760NX MultiSync - Black
Speakers: Logitech® Z-640 5.1 70-Watt Speakers
Home Networking: D-Link® 802.11G Wireless Base Station

The total just almost hit 3 grand, but I figured what the hell. I was tired of skimping out on previous computer buys. Maybe cutting back on the graphics card to save money, or not getting the monitor I wanted. I've waited for HL2 since the day the first screens came out last year. I love HL, I love HL2, I owe it to myself to be able to enjoy this game to it's max. I love video games. :)

So who else updated? When? Why? Last year before the infamous Sept release date? Who bought XT cards just to get the voucher? Tell me your stories. I love hearing them :) Later duuudes. HL2 is nearing.

£3000 ?!?!?! i wouldnt need to pay more than £1500 maximum for that. I never spend that much money on a comp, true it is nice but a lot of money. Im just waiting until processors and gfx cards go down a notch then ill update to what is currently the best, but there wont be any more games that are going to really test the gfx card at the mo other than hl2 so ill buy it then.

ATM i have 2.8 athlon and 9800Pro 1gb ram etc etc so ill be fine playing hl2, just not at 1600x1200.

Well, my rig gets a 900E upgrade only for HL2

I wasn`t even planning to update anywhere soon but thats half-life 2 we are talking about!!11eleven!1 :bounce:

1500 eh? Tell ya what. You put that machine together for me for 1500 or under, and I'll cancel my order with Alienware for 3000. Pay you 1500 for building the machien, and give you the other 1500 for the hell of it. The graphics card cost over 400 alone. How do you figure your gonna fit everything else in there with only 1100 left? lol

i have a rig that can run hl2 fine but i still want a new one for games like fear and bf2

"Its just a case "

oh ho ho ho, its a silenced case made out of black aluminum, with vertical or horizantal hd mounting, and its pretty, and yeah...i guess it is just a case, lol.

neato, you should buy what you want. Plus a good case will last you years and years to come, and the better it is, the more you wont have to get a new one.

And also, the good cases dont cut the heck out of your hands!

My next computer has:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2GHz $286
ATI RADEON X800 XT PLATINUM $800
ASUS K8V SE DELUXE ATHLON64 $157
CORSAIR VALUE SELECT DUAL CHANNEL 1024MB KIT PC3200 DDR400 CAS2.5 2X512MB (258$) (subject to change)
ENERMAX CS-800TA SILVER MID-TOWER CHASSIS (106$)

I still need fans, a really good cooling system (gonna overclock to 3.0GHz if it's possible, but it probably won't be) and a better PSU (case comes with 350W). HDD and DVD-burner are being scrapped from by older computer (120Gb and 2.4X).

Either way, right now it's around 1600$ Canadian.

I bought a new computer for the future in general... It should do everything I want it to do great... Including playing Half-Life 2!

Just read my Sig.

Those are two other reasons I upgraded man Im ready for some BF2 hopefully HL2 will have somthing like that with vehicles or at least be made in a mod!

dude,

alienware computers are very expensive... you can build a computer 3 times better than that one with 3k...

thats my opinion.. don't buy an alienware..

zipzoomfly.com and newegg.com are very good and trustworthy websites..

:D

I'm ordering all new. Haven't used Wintel for 3 years.......... video card won't be as good as original poster's comp, but will cost 2k less...

Did you double check on the availability of that x800xt Platinum card? Doesnt look good for it http://content.guru3d.com/news.php?cat=&perpage=154#1772

Would suck to wait 4 weeks for your computer to be built to only get an email saying oops sorry but that card was discontinued, which one do you want now?

Update (1): From Hightech Information Systems (HiS) "No, the product is not discontinued. As I know it the Platinum Edition will be continued, but with Limited qty available. "

Update (2): From ATi "Hello Hilbert, - at the actual date, I cannot confirm that our Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition will not be discontinued. "

And if they do run out. Big farriggin deal. I'll get the next best. 2 more weeks to wait, and HL2 wont be out then. So it doesnt bother me.
