Halo 2 will be absolutely awesome.
But you're comparing the sequel to one of the best console games of all time to a game that was voted THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME by gamers themselves (Thank you Gamespy)

Dude, someone even tried to rig the contest by giving Halo 30,000 votes and Half-Life 15,000. But Gamespy caught onto them (who the hell wouldn't notice some cheating there? when every other vote only got a total of about 12,000 votes, suddenly this one pulls out 45,000) and Half-Life claimed its rightful throne

Yep, Half-life pwned halo, mario bros 3, doom, starcraft and so many others in the gamespy title fight.

We need to take the Gamespy results with a massive pinch of salt :)

It's obvious that the majority of voters were pc gamers. If it was a 'fair' vote than something like GTA would have won.

Well, it was also in the start of Jan 2004 - considerable HL2 hype (people hoped april 2004) was there and no Doom 3 status was known. So was no Halo 2 release date, then. So yes, people were teensy weensy bit biased with HL.

If it would've been a fair vote, Zelda: Ocarina Of Time would've easily won, with Half-Life a close second.

Also, to do a proper fair vote, you'd need to have people who are not just console players, nor just PC players.

Also almost all of the Gamespy editors said that Half-Life was going to win

Good point.

Add the fact that the majority of gamers have never even played HL (a crime I know :/)

It's easy to forget how small pc gaming really is in the scale of things.

Now, now Crom. Which one of us is trolling??

er... you? Please don't patronise me. I made no direct reference to anyone here being wrong, dumbasses or stupid - I believe that was you.
I was commenting on consoles that will never match up to PC's no matter how you categorize them, and the thread being lame. You call that trolling?

Console MPs in no way match up to PC MPs - that isn't a fanboy remark, it's observation gained from experience. At the time, fed on a diet of Half Life, Unreal Tournament, RTCW etc, playing Halo when it came out just... sucked. Like all console games, it's a dumbed down wannabe PC fps packed into a little plastic box restricted by lack of technological upgrades, a poor control method, and an agegroup influenced target audience.
Halo 2 will no doubt be great on x box if you're 13 and can't afford a proper computer, but comparing it to ANY pc game, single or multiplayer, is just ridiculous.

Well, I disagree Crom.

You basically called all console users children - which, apart from being completely untrue, is a trolling comment. It doesn't have to be directed towards any one person.

It sounds like we have a similar background in online games. I've been playing RTCW/ET, at a pretty decent level, for around 3 years now (HL/CS, Quake etc etc before that)

However, I greatly enjoy Halo with my mates too (mid 20's-30's, 'decent' pcs etc) Ideal for a small LAN party (not many pc games cater for 3 v3)

'but comparing it to ANY pc game, single or multiplayer, is just ridiculous.'

Now that is just silly :/ Just except that poeple have different tastes. All of this is subjective after all.

Well thats not really fair to say as you haven't played Halo 2. the multiplayer portion looks VERY promising and action packed, if you have Xbox Live that is.

Also i've played some console FPS games that kick the shit out of most PC FPS games

Really? do share.

edit - Times a change, Warbie - I stopped playing those games years ago. Now my main MP is CoD. Fancy a scrim?

Let me sparta :)

Golden Eye

Perfect Dark

Metroid Prime (first person adventure game really - still puts nearly all recent pc releases to absolute shame, though)

Halo :p

Not my cuppa tea really, never liked iron sights - and it's a little slow for my liking.

It's a shame RTCW died - still the best clan game around imo.

I'm interested as to how you rate them as better. Graphics? gameplay? simplicity?

i still think hl2 wins, cos on this poll hl2 won by a greater margin than halo 2 won on the other one, if you understand.

on a side note - everyone has much better avatars on that forum!!!

Challenge mainly. Gameplay second. Golden Eye alone took me years to master.

I also like the more social side of console gaming. Even playing on comms with your mates/clan doesn't compare to being in the same room with them. Which is why LAN parties are great (but too much hastle to make a regular occurance)

//edit

infact, compared to that list I find most pc shooters to be quite simple and shallow.

CROM, stand down and stop trying to offend all the people who see Halo as a good game. dont call X-box gamers kids, just because (shock horror) they dont like the games you like, it doesnt mean that they are all 13 year old kids who are incompetant and annoying.

and PC MP can be much worse than console MP. youve obviously never played halo co-op, ot timesplitters 2 with loads of mates round. Metroid prime 2 multiplayer will own, too. there are loads of decent MP console games, and all of them are much more fun than PC multiplayer games.

i mean, when i play CS on a server, or even with freinds over mic- i still dont have as much fun as if i had 3 mates hunched over a TV screen battling out for CTF on timesplitters.... basicallly consoles are much more fun. PC multiplayer is far more competitive, and i rarely ever have any real "fun" on the servers.

In fact, the only time i have really had fun on PC multiplayer is late on friday nights when i used to go down to IGO cybercafe with all my mates, it saw so f'ing fun. i played exactly the same games as i do now on my PC (warcraft 3, generals, Ut2k3/4, CS, RTCW, BF1942), but we were all sitting next to each other and it was so unbelivable funny. but then IGO closed down ;(

ever scince it closed down, i havent had too much fun on my PC. its all so much more competitive... but i recently bought BF1942- so maybe things will start getting more random funny :)

True, the social aspect of consoles is fun... but that doesn't mean the games are better. (shallower??? come on)
Perhaps the amount of time it takes you to master a particular game is as a result of battling a poor control system?

edit - suicide42 - i'm not TRYING to offend anyone, merely stating that consoles and console games are aimed at children. Whether only kids play them is neither here nor there, the games are dumbed down regardless.

CR0M said:

Or a control system that requires more practise to become skilled with. I don't think easier equals better in this case - especially in some games, where being a good shot is a challenge in itself (unlike CoD single player. Hitting the bad guy requires as much skill as opening a folder in windows :/)

I find getting a headshot in Golden Eye far more satisfying than in, say, CS or RTCW. It is possible to be very accurate with a joypad (not to mention how much analogue movement can add to the immersion - especially in single player games)

With all the fancy gfx and physics the pc offers, it feels more like i'm aiming and firing a real weapon in Golden Eye than in any pc title i've played.

//edit As for being shallow - compare FarCry to Perfect Dark, or Metroid Prime. Or any other pc shooter (bar a handful - HL, SS2 etc) for that matter. These are not 'simple, dumbed down' games. Infact they've kept my faith in video gaming alive for the last few years.

I also think you'll find that the target audience for the majority of console games are in their late teens to mid 20's.

I hate it how people think that these new games are going to completly blow HL2 out of the water, or any other game.

SOF2 omg HLs strangle hold on gaming is vanquished - NOT

Call of Duty WOW this is the best ww2 game ever released, and its MP will surly be high competition to all others - NOT

Far Cry Holy hell, this game and its upcoming massive community will ensure it is around and popular for years to come - NOT

Halo 2 What? Same old bullshit. - YES

The only game that is going to be as big as HL2 this year and probably next year is Doom3, and it deserves it. People all think these other games will be the next massive thing, but they all die within 2 months of people completing the singlplayer. The Mp is played around with for abit, but then the servers are all empty. People need to stop thinking HL2 is going to be beat by these footnotes in gaming history like Far Cry. Untill a game comes along that is so imersive and the game makers dedicate themselves to the comunity making free games on its engine (like valve do and Dice/EA dont) only then will there be a game to rival HLs monopoly of the MP gaming scene.

Touché. :smoking:

Halo :p

Ok thats funny. I won`t comment the other too but goldeneye & perfect dark were both sooo lame...
I was playing halo for some time. Just couldn`t find whats the entertaining in killing power-rangers-like creatures with lame alien weapons (of course there are normal weapons too but the alien weapons were so funny). No need to mention that I stopped. I even enjoyed Red Faction more than halo... :x

Well - you're in the minority then :p

It's hard to discredit Golden Eye, which has been recognised by the industry, and many 1000's of fans, as a classic.

There was a HL vs GE poll on this forum a while back. The results were only 2:1 in favour of HL. Not bad at all considering most members here are pc gamers who love HL. (name another fps, on any format, that could have done so well)

Half-Life 2 will kick them flaming ninjas so hard they wont know what hit'em 'till they're in Star-Trek episode 654657!!!!

I hate Halo burningly; it plays like a console even on computer. I hate Xbox too and thus I echo the below:

Well I enjoy both games, I even have a preorder of Halo 2, but realistically it can't compete at all.

Well I remember 12yo kids playing it and they were really enjoying it. I was playing it too. Just was curious "what makes them to like it so much". No, really, it was far too simple admit it ;) Just walking here and there and shooting. Maybe its a classic because there were only a few fps games then but I can`t imagine how it can be compared to hl.
You see its like comparing Fifa (or any modern football game) to sensible soccer (or whatever it was called). The latter had lots of fans who didn`t like fifa (and it is a classic too). But it wasn`t a footbal simulator. Moving a couple of textures up/down and using only one key isn`t realistic at all. But hey, it had 1000s of fans too. I remember how addicted some of my friends were back then...

Why even ask this question on a Half-Life 2 board?

What's the next poll going to be "Is man in pointy hat at Vatican city, a Catholic?" or "Do Bears use toilets or do they do their business in a wooded area?".

Is it that surprising that a Halo 2 fan board is full of people who prefer Halo to Half-Life and the Half-LIfe 2 fan board is full of people who prefer Half-Life to Halof?

Funny yet pointless thread. Seriously, Half-Life 2 won't even be able to touch HALO 2
Stupid answer..Sorry, but its true.
from teamxbox.com

they say HALFLIFE2 WONT EVEN TOUCH HALO2

half life 2 will suck, the mods won't.

:dozey: half-life 2 will not suck and i bet most of the first mods to come out will

Half-Life 2 will be the better single player experience, while Halo 2 will probably have the better multiplayer.

HALO2 BETTER MULTIPLAYER??? yeah right :sniper: :sniper: :sniper:

why everibody hate the consoles?

on topic: IMO Halo is good but HL2 is aclaimed
but Halo2 will ship before HL2 so maybe will be more aclaimed

For **** sake what kind of question is that? *Bio shakes his head

My mate got an X-Box on the strength of Halo alone. He was never into consoles until he saw his brother playing Halo.

He didn't have a high spec PC to run the latest games, so an X-Box was a viable alternative. Since buying the X-Box he's bought 2 or 3 more games, and hardly uses it anymore. He'll probably buy Halo 2, well, just because it's Halo 2.

When he saw Far Cry running on my PC for the first time, he was gob smacked. He forgot all about Halo and asked if Far Cry was coming out on the X-Box.

That quote earlier on in the thread about 'giving Halo to a console gamer was like giving a lighter to a caveman' sums the whole thing up perfectly. Halo was a great title for the X-Box but it was really very, very lame by comparison to other FPS titles on the PC.

The limits of the engine were still there when they ported it to the PC, even with the details on high, the indoor levels were bland and non-descriptive and the outdoor levels just basically amassed to some green hills, a bit of rock and some sea. Wholly disappointing given what could have been done with it.

Far Cry may have been a huge disappointment in the longevity stakes, but look at the technology used to make it, and you can see beyond that shallow, emptiness. Halo really offered nothing to PC gamers but everything to console gamers, who don't know any better anyway (due to the limitations of their hardware, not because they are 'dumb').

Didnt thought halo2 would come before november.

I say that Halo2 will come before HL2 cuz we dont know the HL2 release

This is where I disagree. Halo offers something that many PC games just don't provide - which is a challenge (this isn't meant in a bad way)

There's no denying that FarCry looks very good, but it's a one trick pony. I had finished, and uninstalled, it within one week of purchase - with no incentive to ever return. Halo (xbox), on the other hand, kept me engrossed in single (especialy co-op) and multiplay for almost a whole year. There is no real contest as to which is the superior game (I mean Halo btw ;) )

Everyone I know who thinks Halo is great also has a decent pc. This 'giving Halo to a console gamer was like giving a lighter to a caveman' is complete rubbish.

Even the gameplay designer said something along the lines of "Halo is about 30 seconds of fun, played over and over" in one of the 'making-of' videos on bungie's site.

What a concept. :p Bungie should make another Marathon, that would be cool.

Halo had a ridiculous amount of polish and engaging action....thats what drew people in. Its continued popularity has to be proof to people that there really was something to the game that made people like it. The argument that XBox players are lesser humans is absolutely crap and I don't need to justify it by explaining why. Likewise for anyone saying the same about console gamers in general, seeing as how most PC players also own a console. :D
Halo 2 looks to be a hell of a ride, but my loyalties will probably still remain with Half-Life unless Bungie pulls something astounding. You can sure bet that I'm gonna have both upon release.

I hate to admit it.. being a HL2 fanboy, but HALO 2 will own HL2 in that Halo2 has coop

even if the sp is mediocre, it will own HL2 simply because my bro and I can play the shit outta it tactically split-screen.

I cant tell you how many hours we have invested into Halo coop.. its insane.. probably more than I have played any other game ever.

Warbie said:

Halo took me like 5 hours to beat on hard.- challenging?

But I do agree that most of the peeps on this board are underestimating halo, I had loads of fun playing it and even more with on co-op. Though I don't think of it as one of the greatest games ever made, its certainly better then far cry etc.
