Dr. Jerald Block, a psychiatrist in Portland, Ore., specializes in treating those who've spent years living as warlocks, ogres, or spaceship commanders. He believes that psychiatry needs to do a lot of catching up in order to understand why people get stuck in games like Warcraft.

IDEAS: Describe the people who walk into your office. What does a computer compulsion look like?

BLOCK: Some people come in for trouble with Internet porn. But the computer gamers tend to be harder to treat. People feel a lot of shame around computer games. Whereas, it's socially acceptable to have a porn problem.

IDEAS: You can't be serious. You mean your clients are more ashamed of ...

BLOCK: ...playing World of Warcraft than looking at porn. Yes.

on more reflection this actuially makes sense ..I mean WoW is nerdy in a elves, gnomes and dwarves sort of way..whereas porn is about manly pursuits like watching a beer commercial but with nudity

hmm.. but I would rather be caught playing wow than watching porn :) I think it depends on the individual, alot of my friends play wow and they haven?t an ounce of shame between them.

Integration of Nerdy Fantasy with Porn is key here.

Do you feel ashamed about masturbating?
I guess I would if I got caught, but otherwise..

'stuck in the game'? maybe people are just playing it because they enjoy it.

Wanting to look at porn is just trying to abide by one of the very things that makes us human but I would openly declare that I do in a conversation, I really wouldnt feel ashamed about wow though, its a game and its MY free time, I dont for the record, havent played it in yonks but still my opinion stands.

You are so much win.

Some of you guys seem to have just doing something confused with being addicted to it. He's talking about shame associated with an uncontrollable compulsion to do those things, not just "hay guys I look at porns lol."

I lol'd at that for some reason.

Yes. But strictly night elves, no fapping over your new tier 16 epic boots of the holy raven ****er. A dwarf is fine too.

I'm not ashamed that I played it... I'm ashamed of how MUCH I played it! Typing /played was always pretty horrifying. I had something like 130-140 DAYS on one guy...

You bastard, I just sprayed coffee all over my monitor

It depends who I'm talking to. I used to play World of Warcraft, and for example, I met this new girl, and let's say I still did play...I would admit I do a lot of weird and crazy things to her before I would to playing World of Warcraft. It would definitely be kept a secret, and it'll probably be kept quiet that I ever played for a long while.

Actually, if I think there's a chance the person I'm talking to hasn't played the game, then it probably wouldn't be discussed. But this isn't the first time I've been embarrassed to play a video game I suppose. "I play Counter-Strike" never felt appropriate in social situations. Oddly enough "I play Halo" and "did you play the most recent GTA?" does.
