Would you Pirate HL2 if it went gold like CZ did?

Would you pirate HL2 under the conditions (read post before voting)?

Were it to take that long to hit the shelves, i would download it... And once availiable for purchase, i would buy it...

I allready own the game through the coupon, so it would save me from downloading it from steam.
I would say yes, but only because of the time difference (and i know i can't resist...), and i'm buying the special edition too so valve will be supported either way.

Yes.

Why not? I'm going to buy it in a few months anyway, just getting a head start.

Someone would/will always get some way to pirate it...they always do.

i voted yes.

I would illegaly download it somewhere somehow.. BUT... once it is officially released i would then venture into town to purchase the legal version and would proceed to destroy the illegal version that i possess.

That's fair enough.

On second thought, it depends why it they're holding the release of it 'til November.

That's what they all say. My friend said he'd buy freedom fighters after illegally downloading the full game. He finished it (personally he liked it, but wouldn't admit it) and he still hadn't buy it saying something like - "oh it wasn't that good, not worth my money."

That is natural human tendency, you'd be a fool to waste your money on something you already have played...that's probably how my friend thought.

I'm not saying you would do that - if you are loyal to valve, and hl2 is a great game, then It deserves your money, so do buy it, will ya. :)

So many cop outs! "It'll never happen, so no." It's a philisophical question, just treat it as a "what if."

And Gorgon, why feel sad for the people who said "yes"? Because they really want the game? I can't imagine anyone pirating this game and not later buying the full version, unless they don't care about multiplayer and mods down the road, or unless they just plain ole suck.

In which case, I'd feel sad for them.

True story: I was psyhco for Far Cry when someone leaked the final build. I had already beaten the game like 3 days before the official release, and the second it hit the shelves I shelled out almost 50 bucks for it. "Piracy" isn't just some horrible thing miscreant little h4x0rz do to stick it to The Man anymore, ya know. Or did you pay for all those MP3's on your hard drive? :naughty:

Another thing to remember is: warez=no online .

Face it, even if you download an illegal copy you will be needing a CD key, so maybe the single player portion will be playable but in all probability you won't even be able to log onto steam. No steam no online, no online no patches/mods/multiplayer.

As beautifull the singleplayer can be, you NEED the online, it's what's kept Half-Life going over the years, and probably the high number of sales of HL1 also tie into the fact that Half-Life had WON wich also checked your CD key.

Long story short, you need to buy it anyway.

I'd download it without a doubt asap.
When it releases i'd buy it for mp

Little honesty never hurts anyone :p

Much to learn, you still have. Especially with such hot property. As seen with HL1, FC, and Blizzard, multiplayer keys are NEVER a problem...

I would actually buy this one, cause the pirated edition wouldn't be the Special Edition ;).

But if we were to hypothetically accept them delaying even AFTER it goes gold, I wouldn't be surprised at the consequences.

I have to admit, if they did that. It would piss me off alot. I bet i would just get a burnt copy from a friend. Chances are it would be out of date way way out of date any way.

Honestly, I'd have to say that I would pirate it. November is a long way away and I need something to do this summer. :(

Too true! Can't be doing with getting a girl or even a job again! Not with HL2 on my mind anyway.

for the people who voted yes............they are sad people.

Too true! I've just found out i've got college, 9am on the coming Monday! Computing! How saddening. How quaint.

Roll on HL2.

I find these poll results discouraging. 40% pro-pirate? You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Well, true, as long as you buy it after, but the problem is, if it sucks (witch I dont think) maybe they wont buy it after.
But then if its great and you want the MP, well you will buy it original then no harm done.

Wrong. If you pirate a game, even if you intend to buy it later, you're encouraging piracy.

There's no justification for it.

Same here. I still havent touched the leak.

Yep. Never touched the leak either. I looked for it a few times and found it, but I just couldn't do it.

If it gets delayed again, I'll get the beta. I can only wait so long, and my patience is quickly running out.

BTW: How would you pirate a game that isn't out yet? Wouldn't that involve some h4xX0ring?

*sigh* Yes the results are disturbing.
But thier not at all surprising, considering how many on these forums openly admit to playing the leak.

I admit to playing pirated games in the past, but my morality cought up with me, it was... expensive. But I feel better. :) (Windows XP Pro was kinda expensive too...)

Sure. This is utopia. Of course, we are ashamed of ourselves... :upstare:

Christ...if the frickin hax0rs weren't around in the first place back in September then the game would probably have gone gold around now. Anyone who tries to hack Valve and threaten the delay of this game any more, and I will hunt you down and hang you by your balls.

o wait wait wait! When you are speaking of 'pirating', are you speaking of paying for an illegal copy of a game, or just just downloading it via BitTorrent or something similar for free?

Cos i certainly will not pay for anything illegal. I'll take it for free. As for hacking into Valve i wouldn't endorse it in anyway. The thread starter never mentioned paying or hacking in the conditions for the question.

pirating, I would define it as obtaining something illegally like. stealing?
you should check a dictionary perhaps. I would, but i'm lazy right now.

hmmm, at first i said no, but now since its not coming out untill august (instead of say..... july), then i think i might have to go find the leak..... i am seriosly incapable of waiting any longer... ;(

Lol, already 61 votes yes but almost no one dares to post a comment.

I certainly have had pirate programs on my computer which I later either hated and never finished and hence deleted it, or loved and bought it when I had the cash. That's certainly not a good reason though, and I admit that openly.

But there are certain games/companies I would NEVER do that to no matter what.

So...no way for me concerning HL2. Because of HL1 and the mod community, I respect HL2 far too much and, even though there were some mistakes in the PR department with Valve, I respect them too much as well. I could name many other games and companies as well which I would never ever pirate.

The one thing I do not understand with this topic though: if the game is months away (after waiting ONLY a year since it was announced...what is another 2 months gonna mean??) why pirate it at all? I CAN at least understand nabbing a program like 3DMax or WinXpPro because of it's cost (not saying it's OK, but sayin I can at least see the reason behind it), but a $40-50 game which will be released in a few months time seems a bit cheap to me.

(also never touched the stolen build and was pissed when I saw screenies from it)

If the game was done and they were gonna wait 5 months to release it because they got greedy for holiday sales, I'd definitly think about it. I never played the leak because I just kept saying that it was coming out soon to myself. But if the game is done and they are waiting 5 months to release it that's just absurd.

It's really not worthwhile. I'm sure anyone who's played it will tell you as much.

You'll be better off waiting for the final product, however long it may take.

I still say September at the absolute latest. ;)

A stupid statement, really. Why would the comlplete version be on internet six months before it comes to the stores?

Even though i havent bought a game in ages i was thinking about buying half life 2, purely because you wouldnt be able to play it online with a downloaded copy.

But this is an interesting scenario, if they were withholding the game after such a long delay, for no valid reason, then i would download it.

(and btw the beta leak would not compare to the gold leak, the beta leak is a buggy shell of half life 2)

if i knew my money was going toward a legit copy of hl2(which is a sure thing because im modding for it), then i would download it early.

because once you make up in your mind that you are buying it, whats left is morals and ethics you enforce upon yourself, even if you dont know better than your own self. because valve is out of the picture, in your mind they will have their money, so the only morals left are the ones that affect YOUR conscience. but if you are smarter than yourself, you would know theres no reason to think you are doing anything wrong.

I'd get the illegal version.

But count me in as one of the people who buy it later. there's no way in hell i'd go without playing it online and at least attempting to mod. But the SP would hold me over till i could get a legit MP-able copy. So i figure sampling it before i do pay the full retail is A) morally okay to me and B)not damaging to Valve's profit, i mean hey they are getting the money. so nobody really loses. in fact everyone winss
