Your Half-life 2 Gamespot score prediction

nope, that means that it is impossible to make a better game for the time we are speaking of.. hl2 will NOT have 100%, the proof it wont is doom3...

You'd better explain yourself or you might stir up something nasty.

and thats just the games on my desktop.

admit it, every day Hl2 is delayed other games get more advanced and actualy come out on time.

5 years in development and the prats still cant finish it in time.

Dougy, Fenric was asking what games have HL2 features at that level of quality that's out now...... he wants you to answer "none, sir".

Anyways, I hope you realize that features do not make a game good and that simply having a certain feature does not mean that the feature will be used effectively or to really better the game.

And no, people will not admit a lie simply to please you. Games recently released cannot touch what some of the next-gen games are capable of and very few 'quality' PC games actually come out on time.

I think you should think a little wider before you make some of the bold statements that you make.

I think he means that there are somethings that doom 3 will do better then HL2 like the lighting system. So HL2 can't get a 10 because with those 2 games being out around the same time that HL2 should have it too, otherwise its not as perfect as it could be.

The way I would rate graphics would be by effect. Doom 3 will deserve a 10 for the effect of it's lighting and normal maps in indoor, industrial complexes. I also think HL2 deserves a 10 for how well its HDR, lighting, models/textures and shader effects work on open urban areas- Just the way Grim Fandango deserved a 10 for it's aztec inspired art and imaginative environments.
I see the point though.

Graphics : 10
Sound : 9
Gameplay : 10
Story : 9
Intangible : 7(Steam hampers lan/offline play)

Overall : 9.0

The gamespot score will be exactly what I say it is.

And it'll be...

From 1.0-10.
I know I'll be right:)

9.6

On a side note though, gamespot.com is notoriously tough on games that don't live up to the hype, which means that their scores are usually relative to the amount of hype the game gets.

I guess a 9.7

Gamespot seems to like FPS and 3rdPS games - Metroid Prime got a 9.6, Call of Duty, Freedom Fighters and Max Payne 2 all got 9.0 or higher.

On the N64, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark got very high scores.

Heck - if they gave Zelda: Ocarina of Time a 10, then HL2 will be a shoe in.

HL2 could be utter sh*te and half of you would still say it ownz.

You didn't answer fenrics question. Which games have come out that have the same level of features as HL2? Because I want to know where to buy these games?

Stalker, Farcry and Doom 3 are fine looking games, but none of those is promising to deliver the sort of things that HL2 does, namely intelligent material Physics, and realistic facial expression and lipsynching?

Neither Max Payne 2 or Deus EX: Invisible War deliver these things either (although MP2 get's an honourable mention for the texture levels). They combine physics, and things fall over easily enough, but none of the objects in either game possess any real weight, barrels tip as easily as wastebaskets. You only have to brush past a chair in MP2 to tip it over :dozey:

Doom III is said to boast the same level of physical interaction, and seeing the old E3 demo showed off the lip-syncing. Of course; HL2's system does the lip-syncing, DoomIII is animated.

However; I don't think DoomIII will have wood shattering floors...especially since there's no evidence, or need, for wood in DoomIII.

but as long as the doom 3's engine can do it...you know the rest

wow, i'm a manhack now! didn't know that status existed :x

well I'm not going to be dazzeled by the lighting in DoomIII, my monitor will be on full brightness so I can see dark areas, plus I play on an LCD so you don't really get the same depth and color of a CRT. Anyhoodlydoodle... the lighting looks like plastic anyways. (does to me).

I'm trusting that Half-Life will get a 9.+ score from the editor but a complete 10 from the Users because of the mods. There are more HL2 mods already than there are HL1 mods. at least I think so someone prove me wrong cause I'm not sure. The mods for HL are what really made it such a strong selling point and have such a strong fan base. Without CS, HL might have been another game of the year. But so far its still one of the great games to play. Heck, I bought HL so I could play CS. I never even beat the first level of HL.

A score of 10 means out of the games that they have already reviewed it is up there with the best. It doesn't mean that any game AFTER it can't be better. If that were true then every game they review would have to get a 1 cause who knows maybe in the next 10 years will be inside games like Tron or something. Tron anyone remember that movie? that movie was the shit :afro:

Gamespot
HL2 for PC 9.0
HL2 for Xbox 9.5

They always rate Xbox higher. lol

I believe you, since HL doesn't have levels. :D :D :D

Sure it does.. the levels are what load, or atleast that's what they're classified as :)

What??? You're gonna play Doom 3 with everything bright???? C'mon!! That'll ruin the whole experience.

I fully intend on playing Doom 3 in the dark, detail turned up as high as my comp can handle, sound turned up and a pair of headphones(I don't have a great speaker set up so the only way I can get any 3d audio is with my headphones), and I'll be wearing some adult daipers......just in case I mess myself.

On a lighter note, I can't wait to try out D3's multiplay! Even though there will only be 4 people at a time, it will still be some scary ass 4 person mayhem. Especially when someone gets the Beserker power-up because they'll go in a rage and kill everyone with the flashlight(yes, the flashlight. You don't use your gun in beserker mode. The flashlight will be able to deal a rediculous amount of damage) and all the while emitting a blood curdling scream that can be heard all throughout the map!!

Oh yeah. I'm gonna guess that G-spot will give HL2 either a 9.8 or a perfect 10.

According to Gamespot:

10.0: "Perfect"
This exceedingly rare score refers to a game that is as perfect as a game can ever aspire to be. A game that receives this rating could not reasonably be improved upon in any meaningful way.

It's quite possible that Half-Life 2 could end up like this.

Just look at some other high-rated games (I know these are only two, and for the old N64, but it goes to show that it could happen).:cheese:

indeed im going to be positive and agree with this dude

Did Gamespot give Mario 64 a 10/10?

I believe that when that game came out it was absolutely light years ahead of anything I had ever played, and I think it qualified for the "could not reasonably be improved upon in any meaningful way" award.

Well, I would have given Mario64 10/10 except for the swimming bug where you could always regain full health. I would consider fixing that to be a meaningul improvement.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that bug. But man that was an awesome game.

This is the GameSpot score I'd give HL2 if I knew wtf I was talking about right now, but since HL2 isn't even out yet, I don't. It's totally impossible to know exactly what the game is going to be like when it hits shelves... but I bet it'll be a mirror image of the scores above : )

Hmmmm... I never thought of that as a bug... just... handy!

I didn't even know about it :-P Mario64 was a very good game, aside from that bug. I think it's a candidate for best N64 game ever.

Geez, I dunno. I thought the Legend of Zelda was pretty good. Nice clean fun. It's one of those games that give you a fuzzy feeling inside when you play it (or was that just me).

HL2 'review'. Naturally speculative, I haven't played the you-know-what, but it's fun to imagine:

gameplay - 8

Suspect it'll fall short of the hype in some way (possibly story/flow). Good physics implementation. AI solid but unspectacular. Effective, but obvious, use of scripting in places.

graphics - 9

High frame rates, solid engine, but no dynamic lighting. Works well on low-end machines, but doesn't really take advantage of high-end systems. Excellent models, but occasionally bland texturing.

(I'm guessing it's going to come out Mar-April time, by which time it's not anywhere near as impressive as it was 6 months ago).

sound - 9

Good, nothing special.

value - 9

Game feels rather short, but mods will add considerable lifespan.

tilt - 8

High quality, but doesn't raise the bar in the same way HL 1 did. Problems with steam/internet play.

Overall score in the early nineties/late 80's.

Gameplay - 10

Solid characters, intruiging storyline, intense action, great facial animation and good AI mean great gameplay start to finish.

Graphics - 9

Very good level design, nice special effects in some parts, others only so-so. Unparalleled enemy design and animation. (Strider, anyone?) Runs well on many systems.

Sound - 10

Soundscapes subtly change the sound around you based on what's going on. Very creepy at times, weapon sounds are crisp and punchy.

Value - 8

At $60, this game is pricey, but worth it for a number of reasons.

Tilt - 10

We've all been waiting for this game, it delivers a great singleplayer experience, and we haven't even seen what mods will do with it yet.

Overall

9.4

:) :) hopefully!

god, what if it was just terrible?

Where'd you get $60 from? Thought it was going to be the same price as every other new game on the market.

I'd consider koopa's review a worst case scenario. I don't think it could get worse than that according to what we've seen.

huh, go figure. I had it in my mind that it would be 60, but i don't know why. All the sites say 44 or 49. sounds good to me. Value = 9.

as has probably already been said, gamespot is as bad as gamespy when it comes to sucking up to game companies or having opinions that hugely differ from the majority of the gaming community (e.g. unreal 2 better than unreal 1? no way in hell; max payne's graphics better than riven's? no way in hell). no doubt it'll get a 10/10 or a 9.5/10 regardless of if it deserves it or not. i guess it's like movie reviews, and we don't really have an obligation to trust the critics. as for what i think it'd get on a more representative gaming site, i don't know anything about the story, the gameplay, the atmosphere, the unscripted ai, or the multiplayer, so i can't even predict that :p i wouldn't suggest that opinions be drawn from valve's "history", since there have been plenty of times where a developer has made an amazing/fun game, and churned out an ass sequel (ut2k3 anyone?); or that opinions be based on supremely biased hype. i fell victim to that last one and ended up squandering $60 on unreal 2, a game that had barely anything known about it except screenshots and maybe a few movies, and how great its graphics and physics were (sound familiar?). i'm not trying to say that hl 2 will irrevocably be a bad game, but that, in some probability, it might just plain suck. assigning it huge scores will either blind people to it (ut2k3: "who cares about the gameplay? look at how many polygons this map has!!!!"), or amplify its suckage (q3a: "i thought quake 3 meant it had something to do with quakes 1 & 2 other than one character model. i was hoping iD would turn over a new leaf and make a game with substance.") :p oh well. my two cents :p

edit: some more :ps for good occaision :p :p :p
