Zelda mini review: not that great

no one mentions that ever .. not once in the history of video games has a console sold itself as "next gen" because of AI/physics ..it's all about graphics, that's all anyone ever talks about ..it's unfortunate/crippling to the industry but that's pretty much how gamers want it

Erm... I'm pretty sure that at at least one of the Sony conferences, when they we're talking about the power of the Cell processor, they were excited to tell you "blah blah graphics blah, and deliver to you amazing physics."
Like all the "rubber ducky" demos for PS2 and PS3... that was showing off vertex and physics.

I think we'd be lying to ourselves if we said that the typical gamer's perception of next gen isnt mostly about graphics

Perhaps that's something that will change. The DS has shown how well a new control method can be accepted. Eventually the visual race will slow and it'll be all about how we interact with video games.

On a slightly related issue - I was chatting with my brother, who's an artist for The Creative Assembly, about the level of detail in games today and how soon we'll reach photorealism. Already developers are choosing to reduce the detail in certain areas of games, as well as using other techniques to make them appear less lifelike. People don't want games to look real - the idea of the uncanny valley applies just as much to video games, perhaps even more, than it does with animation. Eventually focus will shift towards control and art direction rather than res/aa/af/shaders/polygons. That'll be a good day :)

the DS is an exception ..the psp while graphically superior isnt as popular as the DS and that's entirely because of gameplay

I agree ...Oblivion is a good example of that ...realistic to the point of being kinda creepy in a marrionette/manquin sorta way ...games like WoW really push the design above realism and it couldnt be more convincing had they made it more realistic ..I'm kinda tired of reading about new games that are pretty much a bullet list of graphic features over it's competitors/last iteration

Yes, children all over the world are going to be utterly confounded by the advent of the Wii Entertainment System. Parents too will feel the pain when kids want to throw a Wii party and the pants start coming down and the controllers come out!

Man, when I was young, the Wii entertainment System was free and it was actually attached to my body at the top end of my legs near where they join the rest of my torso. I guess I am just ahead of the times! :naughty:

From Penny Arcade today:
I took the Wii home over the weekend and was able to put quite a bit of time into Zelda. There was what I would describe as a “bru ha ha” over at Joystiq when one of their bloggers claimed the game was a flop. He cited its terrible graphics as reason enough to dismiss it entirely. The response in the thread afterwards was heated with lots of people claiming that the graphics weren’t as bad as he claimed and that the game actually looked really good. Having played it all weekend I’m here to tell you that’s not the correct response.

See the problem is that he’s partially right. The game doesn't look very good. I don’t just mean it doesn’t look like Gears of War either, I mean it doesn’t even look good for a GC game and let’s be honest here that’s what we’re talking about. I’ve seen beautiful games on the Cube. Crystal Chronicles, Wind Waker and Resident Evil 4 were all incredible looking games. Twilight Princess can’t really compare to any of them. So he’s right about that, what he’s wrong about is everything else.

Even though the game doesn’t look all that great, it’s still Zelda and it’s ****ing awesome. Our crew plays Gears of War every night and I had a hard time putting down my remote and nun chuck to join them. 1up has a minute by minute write up of the first ten hours of the game which seems ridiculous to me. I don’t know why you’d want to ruin such a great experience and it’s really not necessary. Maybe that’s that new games journalism I’ve heard so much about. Here’s everything you need to know about Twilight Princess:

-Playing Zelda with the Wii controller is super fun. -The game play is a blast. -The story is great. -You’ll never even think about the graphics while you’re playing it.

I recommend avoiding any of the extensive write ups about the game. I’m serious, Twilight Princess is too good to ruin it that way. Just wait a few more days and experience it for yourself.

So ummm.. Stigmata.. can I.. touch your Wii? Maybe even hold it?

I just hope we get the point where extremly powerful machines are affordable and the graphics in games looks so realistic in every single game that people open their eyes to other things. :p

It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better :)

Not long to go \o/

Warbie, this is Wiily getting out of hand.
