It is likely a prescott core, which are known to run very very hot. I would add another fan or two to the case and see if that solves the problem.

These drivers didn't really improve performance on my X800Pro, but I think they were meant more for the X1xxx series anyhow.

I've been really happy with my Sennheiser PC150's. They don't block out all sound around you or anything, but the sound quality is awesome and the felt padding is really nice. You can pick them up for ~$50 US as well.

You do not own gold. Because you bought the game retail, I believe you only get HL2 (and CSS and HLDM) and the stuff that came in the collector's edition box. Look on the packaging and it should say what games you get.
