hey guys, check out post #81 in the thread titled "System Freeze w/ looping squelching sound". I know its not exactly the same problem, but for those of you who have not yet tried downclocking your RAM bus its worth a shot. Ive read a lot of people who've fixed a variety of problems by doing...
okay, i can finally say that im almost positive i have solved the problem, at least for my machine. It is the RAM bus speed (NOT RAM timings!). I have a 400MHZ frontside bus for the CPU. RAM run on the same FSB as the CPU, making its FSB 400 as well. In the BIOS, at least on my MSI mobo, i...
well, ive been able to play for hours successuflly, and ive got it nailed down to the RAM bus speed. I put my CAS back to 2.5 and all my ram timings on auto, and re-ebnabled bank interleaving, BUT i left the ram bus at 333 and its running stable. It still gives a pretty significant hit to my...
so ive been able to play for a total of about 4 hours now without a crash, with the settings as lited in post #49. I think its down to either bank interleaving or my ram bus thats crashing the system, though ive never had a problem with either before. So, im gonna try playing the game with...
so last night i was encouraged by my 1 hour of playablitiy the other night, so i set my RAM bus back to 400 and turned ON bank interleaving, but i left my ram timings at 3-4-8-4. CRASH! another really hard one, where my BIOS was reset back to fail-safe defaults. Im getting kinda worried that...
made these changes to my system:
set RAM timings to 3-4-8-4 (CL-TRCD-TRAS-TRP)
underclocked RAM bus speed from 400mhz to 333mhz
turned off bank interleaving
these are all way underclocking my system, but i was just able to play for an hour without a crash. im going to play a few more...
reinstalled my 4.11 catalysts, so now im configured how i was when the crashing seemed to go away (except that my sound card is now closer to AGP), and it crashed within 15 min. And this crash was much harder... on reboot i got a CMOS/Checksum error. I went into the BIOS and the fail safe...
overclocking is usually done by increasing the front side bus of your system. often, the multiplier is locked in the chip, so by increasing the FSB you are forcing the system to run faster than normal. As Ben said, this is done manually in the BIOS or on the motherboard with jumpers or DIP...
so last night i moved my audigy up to the PCI slot 2 away from my agp port (the one right next to AGP is blocked by video card), and i had 2 crashes last night. The weird thing is, the first crash was a crash to the desktop. That is the first time HL2 has crashed without the weird and horrible...
i agree with more RAM. my roomate has the same setup (except he has 9700 and 1gb ram). He can run is all on high with a pretty good res (1152x864 i think) AA 2x and antrscopic 8x and it runs smooth enough. I would upgrade to 1GB of ram and then you should be peachy.
so HL2 crashd on me last night the same exact way as before. Two things had changed from the time before when i had played it for 4 hours w/o a crash:
-I uninstalled the 4.11 catas i was using for diagnostics and installed 4.12 DNA drivers
-Got the 1/10 official update
last night i was...
the setting for fast writes should be DISABLED
fast writes is usually a BIOS setting, under something akin to "Advanced Chipset Features" or something similar. Just browse your BIOS for Fast Writes and make sure they're disabled. Its a good idea to do this even if this isnt your problem, as it...
I have an ATI radeon 9800pro, and i was wondering what you all (esp those with this same card) think of 4.12 catalyst Vs omega Vs DNA drivers... and maybe those as compared to 4.11. Im trying to figure out what driver set to use, and so far i think ive seen the best performance with the 4.12...
No i didnt move my audigy. I probably should since its a good idea anyway, but the only change i made was disabling fast writes. Im gonna put the new 4.12 DNA drivers in and verify stability later tonight.
well, i have what I hope is good news for everyone. I dont know for sure yet, but i think i've found the solution to my, and hopefully other's problem. Actually, Savarak over in the steampowered fourms suggested this. Just turn off fast writes. For most people this will be in the BIOS under...
this was just posted to the steampowered thread:
"Try turning off FastWrites in bios, and if you get rivatuner(google it), turn off fastwrites with that too"
im at work now and cant try it, but i will when i get home. Please post whether or not any of you have had luck with this...
