The only time I've seen offline mode is when I booted my computer when my internet was down. It asks you.

Start steam in Offline mode. Play HL2. Simple as that.

Great read. Personally, the only parts of Xen that I didn't like were the smegging jumping 'puzzles'. Xen itself was pretty cool, partucilarly the whole mining facility.
