I don't know, from what I've seen of FarCry, it has some strong points and some weak points graphically. The mercenaries look like they were designed in the mind of a 12 year old boy, and they move like robots on speed. In the HL2 videos you can see subtle effects everywhere, the flash of the...
Let's pretend you're working on two projects. One is called Dog, and one is called Cat. You present Dog. Someone from the audience says "Is this Cat?". Do you really think that "We're not calling it Cat" is a sensible answer in that situation?
It's pretty likely that what the inquirer...
Stringing along CS? The mod will die when people get tired of it, or find something better, it's not Valve's job to 'kill' the mod. They couldn't kill it if they wanted to, if they stopped development on it today people would still be playing it 5 years from now. Look at TFC!
Innovation...
Gabe said in the video "We're not calling it CS2". If there was a seperate CS2 project currently in existence, we wouldn't have said "we're not CALLING it CS2", he would've said "No, CS2 is something different" or "No, this is not CS2". It seems that the 'difference' between CS-Source and CS2...
That wasn't a minor touch-up, that was a full single-player game which they paid two dev studios a lot of money to produce. The minor touch-ups were to multiplayer.
Of course they'll charge for HL:Source if you don't have HL1 or HL2. You have to pay for HL1 right now, why would it suddenly...
I don't think it will be a bad thing at all. Think about it this way: the more people that are on Source (all the CS players, all the DoD players, etc), the larger the audience will be for new HL2 mods. The largest audience always attracts the most talent. So the more Source-game customers...
I agree with you guys that fully hi-fi versions of HL1 and ALL the MP mods would be awesome, but realistically... the effort involved in that... I'd rather they just hurry up and finish HL2.
I'm confused, when did they make it seem like they enhanced all the art and gameplay of HL1? They only annouced the port at E3, and all they said was... that it would be ported to the Source engine. I think the idea that it would be beautified was just a bunch of wishfull thoughts from fans...
It's very well written, I love the disparity between how comforting and pleasant Breen looks vs. how junky and worn down the whole train station looks. It really looks like a world nobody cares about anymore, the station is just there to herd people around.
I like the undertone of the "It's...
HL1 is still selling on store shelves. They'll just replace it with HL1:Source. I don't see what the big deal is. People who buy HL2 will probably get it for free.
The more complicated ones will definitely take awhile. But I bet you within 2 months of release there will be dozens of MP mods that are some variant of "DM with Manipulators and vehicles", and at least a few of them will be worth playing.
They're 9 months late with HL2. You want them wasting time on HL1? If I had found out that they had completely remade all the level geometry and models and textures for HL1 I would've been a little peeved. I played that game 5 years ago, hurry up and release the new game!
The point of...
What are you talking about? I don't think you have any idea how much time/money it would take to produce the art assets for a hi-fi version of HL1. Just creating higher detail worldbrush geometry with high res diffuse and specular maps would take a small art team several months.
Valve...
Agreed. I think everyone was expecting something new, given all the secrecy. But I can understand why they did this:
1) They HAD to bring the old MP games to Source. Leaving those players on the old platform would've been stupid, by upgrading them to Source you get more people to buy HL2...
Gah, everyone is STILL convinced that we'll have to pay for the Source ports. One more time:
JUST BECAUSE THE SOURCE PORTS WILL BE 'AVAILABLE COMMERCIALLY' DOES NOT MEAN THEY WON'T ALSO BE INCLUDED WITH HL2.
Counter-Strike is available commerically. Doesn't mean I don't get it free with HL1.
Gabe Newell: Well, for the first time we're talking about what we're going to be doing for multiplayer for Half-Life 2, and what we've done is, we've taken all the original Half-Life 1 content.. so Half-Life 1 single player, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress Classic, DeathMatch, Day of Defeat, and...
Yeah, I saw the prongs open too. Watch the rollermine part when he's in the attic picking up ammo.
Another thing I saw, watch in the toolshed when he picks up the table and tosses it away. The manipulator does not 'blast' it like normally, there is no orange spark, it just kind of tosses...
EDIT: nm my original post.
I keep repeating myself on these forums, but here it is again: Just because CS-Source will be available in a retail box does NOT mean it won't be included in HL2. I think it's likely that everyone who buys HL2 will get CS-Source for free. If you don't want HL2...
