No, no overclocking is needed. All you do is install it like any other processor. An athlon 3000+ is rougly equal, if not faster then, a Pentium 4 3.0-3.2 GHz. So, to recap all other statements made, if you want to have BETTER performance for LESS money, get the AMD. Its your best choice...

depends on how much on an increase in performance you want. But picking up and other 512 mb of RAM, that goes max speed of your mobo would help you out.

he mean preferred cause its ATI, not cause its 9600 se. I have a 9600 se in my old comp and they arent that bad. It runs CSS good so prolly HL2 as well. Plus it overclocks fairly good. I wouldnt be unhappy if someone just gave it to me. Also what card do you have now?
