I'll take the bait.
Valve rules. They're working very very very hard to give us the best fps ever. They must be unbelievably dedicated, and self-sacrificing. Here's to Valve!
Here's my ungrateful complaint: Why oh why do Gabe and Doug have to keep giving out release dates for...
I doubt valve's taken a weekend off in months.
Very good point. They probably turned in release candidate 2 or 3 to Vivendi today, with both parties expecting it to pass, after a rigorous weekend of testing by Vivendi.
SCREW THE SENSIBILITY!!! EVERYONE GO CRAZY! HALF-LIFE 2 IS FINALLY...
I guess gabe assumes they're gonna work their tails off all weekend, and it'll be magically ready monday morning. Just like they were gonna work their tails off all summer 2003 and have it ready by 9/30/2003.. just like they were gonna work their tails off all fall and have it holiday season...
Vivendi will find bugs. They have a much larger quality assurance team than valve would have in-house. There will be multiple release candidates.. probably 2-4 RC's.
I agree with Chris_D. I'm hoping for late september/early october. However, I won't even start to get my hopes up this time till i hear the magic words... "GONE GOLD!"
yeah InSane Tubaina... Just drop it back to dx 8.1, and it'll run like a champ.
If you're worried about what you're losing falling from ps2.0 to ps1.1, read this:

I thought this was kind of interesting...

I've got the ZALMAN ZM-RS6F surround sound headphones. It's true 5.1 surround sound, with 6 little speakers so you really can hear seperate channels. It made Far Cry an even better gaming experience, and will probably be really cool in HL2 and Doom3 too...
I would think that means no EAX:

It currently uses a proprietary DSP engine to support surround sound etc.

how can I be so pessimistic? Well, they've never released a game on time. Ever. And everytime people here get their hopes up, they get dashed again. I'm just trying to prevent people from getting hurt man :) MUCH LOVE FOR YOU!
People, don't be getting your hopes up again. Just wait. I can pretty much guarantee that we won't be playing hl2 in august. I'm still hoping for a september release date, but I'm not going to get excited until I see "HALF-LIFE 2 HAS GONE GOLD!!" . Hell, I'll be happy if it just comes out...
I'm sure vivendi's been getting drops of hl2 to test all along. But an RC to vivendi at the end of the month... (7/31) gives them 2 weeks to qa test it (8/15), something's screwey, valve gives them another release candidate (8/16), vivendi QA tests for another two weeks, gives gold...
Sure. It might take a little bit of work but it's certainly possible.

Hello Rick,
Would it be...
What would you call low end cpu currently? 1.2ghz? (hl2 min spec)
Just so you know, the 2.6ghz(2600+) / 2.8ghz(2800+) came out TWO years ago now, and I certainly wouldn't call them "low end spec"
The fastest consumer P4 is now 3.4ghz. So, in two years, I sincerely doubt 3.2 ghz...
You bitches are really gonna cry in early 2006 when the first unreal engine 3 games come out. Tim sweeney is saying that a 3.2ghz cpu + Nvidia 6800 Ultra will be the very lowest end, and will barely play the game.
ut2k4 still has 1vs1 tournaments, leagues, and ladders.
I'm kind of interested in how it will play. The per-poly hit detection is gonna make it a lot harder to kill people than in a traditional game. Accuracy is going to be god.
D3 has hl2 - like physics. But it uses an in-house physics engine (like crytek did with far cry), instead of Havok. The potential/capabilities are there, but the D3 level designers haven't used physics to the extent that hl2 level designers have.
The part that bothers me even more about...
